Luminescent Thermochromism in a Gold(I)-Copper(I) Phosphine-Pyridine Complex

Self-Assembled Encapsulation of CuX2- (X = Br, Cl) in a Gold Phosphine Box-like Cavity with Metallophilic Au-Cu Interactions

Synthetic routes to the crystallization of two new box-like complexes, [Au6(Triphos)4(CuBr2)](OTf)5·(CH2Cl2)3·(CH3OH)3·(H2O)4 (1) and [Au6(Triphos)4 (CuCl2)](PF6)5·(CH2Cl2)4 (2) (triphos = bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine), have been developed. The two centrosymmetric cationic complexes have been structurally characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction and shown to contain a CuX2- (X = Br or Cl) unit suspended between two Au(I) centers without the involvement of bridging ligands. These colorless crystals display green luminescence (λem = 527 nm) for (1) and teal luminescence (λem = 464 nm) for (2). Computational results document the metallophilic interactions that are involved in positioning the Cu(I) center between the two Au(I) ions and in the luminescence.

Recent progress on small molecular temperature-sensitive fluorescent probes

Temperature is an important biophysical parameter that is closely related with the metabolic activity in living cells. Therefore, the detection of intracellular temperature changes is crucial for exploring temperature-related biological processes. Fluorescence probe is an ideal tool for observing temperature changes in cells, which has many advantages, such as high sensitivity, good selectivity, and noninvasive, and thus aroused the great interest of researchers. In this paper, we summarize the recent progress of organic small molecule temperature-sensitive fluorescence probes in recent years was reviewed. Particularly, we describe the common response mode to the temperature and the practical applications of the probe in living cells and even animal models. Moreover, an outlook regarding temperature detection in clinical applications is discussed. The temperature-sensitive fluorescent probe is a "black box" to many researchers. This review aims to open a window on the prospect of the noninvasive in vivo detection of temperature which is helpful to deeper understand this rich research area.

Closo- or Nido-Carborane Diphosphane as Responsible for Strong Thermochromism or Time Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) in [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]0/

Ortho-closo or ortho-nido-carborane-diphosphanes have been selected to prepare the heteroleptic cationic or neutral [Cu(N^N){(PPh2)2C2B10H10}]PF6 (1) and [Cu(N^N){(PPh2)2C2B9H10}] (2) [N^N = 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole], respectively. Complexes 1 and 2 display very different emissive behavior. Neutral complex 2 exhibits TADF (time activated delayed fluorescence) which has been studied both as powder and PMMA composite with similar ΔE(S1 - T1), τ(T1), and τ(S1) in both phases. Cationic complex 1 displays a much lower quantum yield than 2 and does not show TADF, but it exhibits a significant thermochromic luminescence, and its emission is very dependent on the medium. Theoretical studies show that metal-ligand (M-diphosphane) to ligand (L', diimine) transitions, MLL'CT, are responsible of the transitions which originate the emissive properties, but with very different contribution of the copper center, carborane cluster, and diphosphane phenyl rings for 1 and 2.

Photostable Voltage-Sensitive Dyes Based on Simple, Solvatofluorochromic, Asymmetric Thiazolothiazoles

A family of asymmetric thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) fluorescent dye sensors has been developed, and their photophysical sensing properties are reported. The π-conjugated, TTz-bridged compounds are synthesized via a single-step, double condensation/oxidation of dithiooxamide and two different aromatic aldehydes: one with strong electron-donating characteristics and one with strong electron-accepting characteristics. The four reported dyes include electron-donating moieties (N,N-dibutylaniline and N,N-diphenylaniline) matched with three different electron-accepting moieties (pyridine, benzoic acid, and carboxaldehyde). The asymmetric TTz derivatives exhibit strong solvatofluorochromism with Stokes shifts between 0.269 and 0.750 eV (2270 and 6050 cm^-1) and transition dipole moments (Δμ = 13-18 D) that are among the highest reported for push-pull dyes. Fluorescence quantum yields are as high as 0.93 in nonpolar solvents, and the fluorescence lifetimes (τ_F) vary from 1.50 to 3.01 ns depending on the solvent polarity. In addition, thermofluorochromic studies and spectrophotometric acid titrations were performed and indicate the possibility of using these dyes as temperature and/or acid sensors. In vitro cell studies indicate good cell membrane localization, negligible cytotoxicity, promising voltage sensitivities, and photostabilities that are 4 times higher than comparable dyes. Their ease of synthesis and purification, remarkable photophysical properties, and chemically sensitive TTz π-bridge make these asymmetric dye derivatives attractive for environmental and biological sensing or similar molecular optoelectronic applications.

Gold(I) Alkynyls Supported by Mono- and Bidentate NHC Ligands: Luminescence and Isolation of Unprecedented Ionic Complexes

Reactions of NHC·HX (NHC = 1-benzyl-3-methylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene, X = Br^-, PF₆^-) and (AuC≡CR)_n (R = Ph, C₃H₆OH) in the presence of Cs₂CO₃ initially afford compounds of the general formula [(NHC)₂Au]₂[(RC₂)₂Au]X, which can be isolated by crystallization. With increased reaction time, only the expected mononuclear complexes of the type [NHCAuC≡CR] are produced. The crystal structure of [(NHC)₂Au]₂[(PhC₂)₂Au]PF₆ reveals an unprecedented triple-decker array upheld by a remarkably short (2.9375(7) Å) unsupported Au···Au···Au contact. The mononuclear complex [NHCAuC≡CPh] was found to crystallize as three distinct polymorphs and a pseudopolymorph, which depending on the intermolecular Au···Au distances emit blue, green, or yellow light. Two synthetic approaches were employed for the preparation of a series of dinuclear NHC-ligated Au(I) alkynyl complexes of the general formula [NHC-(CH₂)_n-NHC(AuC≡CR)₂], where NHC = N-benzylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene, R = Ph, C₃H₆OH, C₆H₁₀OH, and n = 1-3. In solution, the complexes with aliphatic substituents on the alkynyl fragment are nonemissive, whereas their phenyl-bearing congeners demonstrate characteristic metal-perturbed ³[IL(C≡CPh)] emission. In the solid state, a clear correlation between intermolecular aurophilic interactions and luminescence was established, including their role in the luminescent thermochromism of the phenylalkynyl complexes. The relationship between the Au···Au distance and emission energy was found to be inverse: i.e., the shorter the aurophilic contact, the higher the emission energy. We tentatively attribute this behavior to a smaller extent of excited-state distortion for a structure with a shorter Au···Au separation.

Remarkable Aurophilicity and Photoluminescence Thermochromism in a Homoleptic Cyclic Trinuclear Gold(I) Imidazolate Complex

A new aurophilically-bonded cyclic trinuclear gold(I) complex, tris[μ₂-(1-ethylimidazolato-N³,C²)gold(I)] ([Au₃(EtIm)₃], 1), has been synthesized and characterized by temperature-dependent crystallographic and photophysical investigations. The crystal packing of 1 reveals two independent molecules in the unit cell, signifying two distinct pairs of dimer-of-trimer units convened by pairwise intermolecular Au···Au interactions of 3.0662(3) and 3.1407(3) Å at 100 K, representing the shortest pairwise intermolecular aurophilic interactions among all cyclic trimetallic gold(I) complexes to date. Remarkably, crystals of 1 exhibit gigantic photoluminescence thermochromism of 10164 cm^-1-from violet to red!-attributed to internal conversion between a higher-energy (T₂ → S₀; λ_max ∼409 nm) and lower-energy (T₁ → S₀; λ_max ∼700 nm) phosphorescent band below and above 200 K, respectively, likely representing an excited-state phase change.
