A Case Study of Mechanical Strain in Supramolecular Complexes to Manipulate the Spin State of Iron(II) Centres

Iron(II) Mediated Supramolecular Architectures with Schiff Bases and Their Spin-Crossover Properties

Supramolecular architectures, which are formed through the combination of inorganic metal cations and organic ligands by self-assembly, are one of the techniques in modern chemical science. This kind of multi-nuclear system in various dimensionalities can be implemented in various applications such as sensing, storage/cargo, display and molecular switching. Iron(II) mediated spin-crossover (SCO) supramolecular architectures with Schiff bases have attracted the attention of many investigators due to their structural novelty as well as their potential application possibilities. In this paper, we review a number of supramolecular SCO architectures of iron(II) with Schiff base ligands exhibiting varying geometrical possibilities. The structural and SCO behavior of these complexes are also discussed in detail.

Modulation of Crystal Packing via the Tuning of Peripheral Functionality for a Family of Dinuclear Mesocates

A family of four novel pyrazinyl-hydrazone based ligands have been synthesized with differing functionality at the 5-position of the central aromatic ring. Previous work has shown such ligands to form dinuclear triple mesocates which pack to form hexagonal channels capable of gas sorption. The effect of the peripheral functionality of the ligand on the crystal packing was investigated by synthesizing complexes 1 to 4 which feature amino, bromo, iodo and methoxy substituents respectively. Complexes 1 to 3 crystallized in the same hexagonal space group P6₃ /m and featured 1D channels. However, on closer inspection while the packing of 1 is mediated by hydrogen bonding interactions, the packing of complexes 2 and 3 are not, due to a subtlety different π-π stacking interaction enforced by the halogen substituent. The more bulky nature of the methoxy substituent of 4 results in the complex crystallizing in the triclinic space group P-1, featuring an entirely different crystal packing.

A large dinuclear Fe(ii) triple helicate demonstrating a two-step spin crossover

Reported herein, the synthesis as well as the structural and magnetic characterisation of the largest reported dinuclear Fe(ii) triple helicate system to exhibit spin crossover-and also a rare example of a 273° helical twist using aromatic spacers-is presented, with exploration of the two-step spin-transition observed.

Waterproof architectures through subcomponent self-assembly

Construction of metal–organic containers that are soluble and stable in water can be challenging – we present diverse strategies that allow the synthesis of kinetically robust water-soluble architectures via subcomponent self-assembly.

Metal–organic containers are readily prepared through self-assembly, but achieving solubility and stability in water remains challenging due to ligand insolubility and the reversible nature of the self-assembly process. Here we have developed conditions for preparing a broad range of architectures that are both soluble and kinetically stable in water through metal(ii)-templated (M^II = Co^II, Ni^II, Zn^II, Cd^II) subcomponent self-assembly. Although these structures are composed of hydrophobic and poorly-soluble subcomponents, sulfate counterions render them water-soluble, and they remain intact indefinitely in aqueous solution. Two strategies are presented. Firstly, stability increased with metal–ligand bond strength, maximising when Ni^II was used as a template. Architectures that disassembled when Co^II, Zn^II and Cd^II templates were employed could be directly prepared from NiSO₄ in water. Secondly, a higher density of connections between metals and ligands within a structure, considering both ligand topicity and degree of metal chelation, led to increased stability. When tritopic amines were used to build highly chelating ligands around Zn^II and Cd^II templates, cryptate-like water-soluble structures were formed using these labile ions. Our synthetic platform provides a unified understanding of the elements of aqueous stability, allowing predictions of the stability of metal–organic cages that have not yet been prepared.

Varied spin crossover behaviour in a family of dinuclear Fe(ii) triple helicate complexes

Dinuclear triple-helicate complexes of the formula [Fe2L3](BF4)4·solv (solv = CH3CN, CHCl3, H2O) have been synthesised and structurally characterised. The bis-bidentate ligands, L, present either strong-field 2-pyridylimine (1) or weaker-field 2-imidazolylimine (2) and 4-imidazolylimine (3) coordination spheres about Fe(ii) centres in an octahedral geometry. Whereas 1 is pervasively diamagnetic, spin crossover (SCO) behaviour is observed in 2 and 3 and has been studied using variable-temperature structural, UV-visible spectroscopic, magnetic and photo-magnetic techniques. Variable-temperature (1.8-400 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements reveal the T1/2 values of 2 and 3 to be strongly dependent upon the solvent and degree of solvation. Photomagnetic studies at 10 K under white-light irradiation revealed an inefficient photo-induced SCO in 2, but full switching in 3.

Subcomponent Exchange Transforms an FeII4L4 Cage from High- to Low-Spin, Switching Guest Release in a Two-Cage System

Subcomponent exchange transformed new high-spin Fe^II₄L₄ cage 1 into previously-reported low-spin Fe^II₄L₄ cage 2: 2-formyl-6-methylpyridine was ejected in favor of the less sterically hindered 2-formylpyridine, with concomitant high- to low-spin transition of the cage’s Fe^II centers. High-spin 1 also reacted more readily with electron-rich anilines than 2, enabling the design of a system consisting of two cages that could release their guests in response to combinations of different stimuli. The addition of p-anisidine to a mixture of high-spin 1 and previously-reported low-spin Fe^II₄L₆ cage 3 resulted in the destruction of 1 and the release of its guest. However, initial addition of 2-formylpyridine to an identical mixture of 1 and 3 resulted in the transformation of 1 into 2; added p-anisidine then reacted preferentially with 3 releasing its guest. The addition of 2-formylpyridine thus modulated the system’s behavior, fundamentally altering its response to the subsequent signal p-anisidine.

Guest-tuned spin crossover in flexible supramolecular assemblies templated by a halide (Cl−, Br− or I−)

A supramolecular dimer of spin-crossover [FeL₃]²⁺ complexes, L, being a polyheterocyclic ligand, encapsulates halides to form [X@[FeL₃]₂]³⁺ cations with tunable magnetic properties.
