Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior in Rare Ln–Cu–Ln Linear Trinuclear Complexes

Competing excitation paths in luminescent heterobimetallic Ln-Al complexes: Unraveling interactions via experimental and theoretical investigations

The interest for heterometallic lanthanide-d or-p metal (Ln-M) complexes is growing because of a potential cooperative or synergistic effect related to the proximity of two different metals in the same molecular architecture affording special tunable physical properties. To exploit the potentiality of Ln-M complexes, suitable synthetic approaches, and the in-depth understanding of the effect of each building block on their properties are mandatory. Here, we report the study on a family of heterometallic luminescent complexes [Ln(hfac)₃Al(L)₃], Ln= Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺. Using different L ligands, we investigated the effect of the steric and electronic properties of the Al(L)₃ fragment, highlighting the general validity of the employed synthetic route. A marked difference in the light emission of [Eu(hfac)₃Al(L)₃] and [Tb(hfac)₃Al(L)₃] complexes has been observed. Thanks to photoluminescence experiments and Density Functional Theory calculations, Ln³⁺ emissions are explained with a model involving two non-interacting excitation paths through hfac or Al(L)₃ ligands.

Synthesis, structural characterization and electrochemical and magnetic studies of M(hfac)2 (M = CuII, CoII) and Nd(hfac)3 complexes of 4-amino-TEMPO

Three mononuclear complexes [M(hfac)x(ATEMPO)y], where M = Cu (11) and Co (12), x = y = 2; M = Nd (13), x = 4, y = 1, and two polynuclear complexes [{Cu(hfac)2(ATEMPO)}n], where n = 2 (14) and 4 (15), were obtained by the reaction of M(hfac)x (M = CuII, CoII, NdIII; x = 2, 3) with 4-amino-TEMPO (4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-N-oxyl) in good yields and their structural, electrochemical and magnetic properties were examined. In all cases, the radical is coordinated to the metal through the amino group, except 15, and the metal ions have an octahedral geometry, except 13. Different coordination architectures of the copper complexes were obtained as a function of the stoichiometry and solvents used. In complexes 11 and 12 the radicals show an equatorial-equatorial and axial-equatorial arrangement, respectively, giving rise to two distinct 2D supramolecular systems through intermolecular interactions. Compound 13 is the first example of a lanthanide complex of the ATEMPO radical. The NdIII ion adopts a rare nine-coordination via binding to four hfac ligands and the radical. The dinuclear complex 14 shows a (Cu-O)2 core in which the CuII ions are bridged by the oxygen atoms from the hfac ligands. In compound 15 the ATEMPO radical acts as a bidentate ligand through the amino and nitroxyl groups leading to an unprecedented tetranuclear square-shaped framework. Cyclic voltammetry showed redox processes associated with the copper and TEMPO moieties. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed the temperature dependence of the conductivity for compound 15 with a maximum of 2.09 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 408 K. The magnetic behavior of complexes 11-15 is determined by metal-radical interactions. Ferromagnetic interaction has been observed for complex 11 due to the existence of two different exchange pathways arising from the conformational arrangement of the radicals around the metal center, whereas the single conformation of the radical in complex 14 resulted in a weak antiferromagnetic coupling. In complex 15 both O-Cu and N-Cu contacts are present giving rise to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, respectively.

Strictly linear trinuclear Dy-Ca/Mg-Dy single-molecule magnets: the impact of long-range f-f ferromagnetic interactions on suppressing quantum tunnelling of magnetization leading to slow magnetic relaxation

The synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of four heterometallic complexes with formulas Ln₂M(OQ)₈ [Ln(iii) = Dy, M(ii) = Ca (1), Mg (2); Ln(iii) = Er, M(ii) = Ca (3), Mg (4); HOQ = 8-hydroxyquinoline] are reported. Complexes display a perfectly linear arrangement of three metal ions involving two terminal Ln(iii) ions and one central alkaline earth M(ii) ion, and they are bridged by three phenolato oxygen atoms from three 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands. Direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies show that there exists a long-range ferromagnetic (FM) interaction between two f-electronic centers in Dy-based complexes 1 and 2 albeit they are separated by diamagnetic alkaline earth ions, and the FM interaction has been successfully reproduced by ab initio calculations. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit significant single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors. This is mostly attributed to the parallel magnetic axes of individual Dy(iii) sites aligning closely to the Dy-M-Dy direction, and the linearly extending magnetic susceptibility tensors of each ion lead to the FM interaction. The dc and ac susceptibility studies of the intramolecularly diluted complexes reveal that the f-f coupling suppresses the QTMs significantly in the absence of the external magnetic field.
