Copper(I) Thiolate Heteroadamantane Cage Structures with Relevance to Metalloproteins

Adamantane-type clusters: compounds with a ubiquitous architecture but a wide variety of compositions and unexpected materials properties

The research into adamantane-type compounds has gained momentum in recent years, yielding remarkable new applications for this class of materials. In particular, organic adamantane derivatives (AdR4) or inorganic adamantane-type compounds of the general formula [(RT)4E6] (R: organic substituent; T: group 14 atom C, Si, Ge, Sn; E: chalcogenide atom S, Se, Te, or CH2) were shown to exhibit strong nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, either second-harmonic generation (SHG) or an unprecedented type of highly-directed white-light generation (WLG) - depending on their respective crystalline or amorphous nature. The (missing) crystallinity, as well as the maximum wavelengths of the optical transitions, are controlled by the clusters' elemental composition and by the nature of the organic groups R. Very recently, it has been additionally shown that cluster cores with increased inhomogeneity, like the one in compounds [RSi{CH2Sn(E)R'}3], not only affect the chemical properties, such as increased robustness and reversible melting behaviour, but that such 'cluster glasses' form a conceptually new basis for their use in light conversion devices. These findings are likely only the tip of the iceberg, as beside elemental combinations including group 14 and group 16 elements, many more adamantane-type clusters (on the one hand) and related architectures representing extensions of adamantane-type clusters (on the other hand) are known, but have not yet been addressed in terms of their opto-electronic properties. In this review, we therefore present a survey of all known classes of adanmantane-type compounds and their respective synthetic access as well as their optical properties, if reported.

Synthesis and characterization of a triphenylamine-dibenzosuberenone-based conjugated organic material and an investigation of its photovoltaic properties

3,7-Bis[4-(diphenylamino)phenyl]-5 H-dibenzo[ a,d][7]annulen-5-one, containing triphenylamine- and dibenzosuberenone-based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) conjugated moieties, is synthesized in high yield by Suzuki coupling of 5 H-dibenzo[ a,d][7]annulen-5-one with [4-(diphenylamino)phenyl]boronic acid. The most important part of the present study is the creation of a dye-sensitized solar cell structure using the synthesized organic molecule for the first time and the power conversion efficiency of this structure. Three solar cell devices are prepared and are named as first device, second device, and third device. The power conversion efficiency (%) value for first device, second device, and third device is calculated as 2.54, 2.38, and 2.54, respectively. Moreover, the chemical structure of the synthesized compound is determined by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet visible, fluorescence spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Relativistic effects at the Cu2O2 core - a density functional theory study

This work presents for the first time the impact of relativistic effects on the Cu₂O₂ peroxide dicopper(ii)-bis(μ-oxo) dicopper (iii) equilibrium bonding motif in existing tyrosinase model complexes [Cu₂(btmgp)₂(μ-O)₂]²⁺ and [Cu₂{HC(tBuPz)₂Py}₂(O₂)]²⁺ [S. Herres et al., Inorg. Chim. Acta, 2005, 358, 1089; S. Herres-Pawlis et al., Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2005, 3815; A. Hoffmann et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2013, 52, 5398]. We use density functional theory (TPSSh/cc-pVTZ+D3BJ) with various relativistic approaches (ECPs, DKH, ZORA) to tackle the question of impact and find, as already known for small model complexes in the literature, that the O core is more stabilized with respect to the P core by the relativistic influence [D. G. Liakos and F. Neese, J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2011, 7, 1511]. Whereas DKH and ZORA yield similar results, ECPs underestimate the predicted effect. By calculating the functional of the relativistic overlap change, we can exactly identify the relativistic changes at the molecular orbital level and narrow down the affected MOs. Thus, by performing a detailed bond analysis utilizing the overlap population, we are able to rationalize the effects at the chemical level by finding relativistic bond stabilization in both isomers, which is more dominating in the O core. In conclusion, relativistic effects already play an important role in dicopper cores and should be considered.

[Cu6 (NGuaS)6 ]2+ and its oxidized and reduced derivatives: Confining electrons on a torus

The hexanuclear thioguanidine mixed-valent copper complex cation [Cu₆ (NGuaS)₆ ]⁺² (NGuaS = o-SC₆ H₄ NC(NMe₂ )₂ ) and its oxidized/reduced states are theoretically analyzed by means of density functional theory (DFT) (TPSSh + D3BJ/def2-TZV (p)). A detailed bonding analysis using overlap populations is performed. We find that a delocalized Cu-based ring orbital serves as an acceptor for donated S p electrons. The formed fully delocalized orbitals give rise to a confined electron cloud within the Cu₆ S₆ cage which becomes larger on reduction. The resulting strong electrostatic repulsion might prevent the fully reduced state. Experimental UV/Vis spectra are explained using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and analyzed with a natural transition orbital analysis. The spectra are dominated by MLCTs within the Cu₆ S₆ core over a wide range but LMCTs are also found. The experimental redshift of the reduced low energy absorption band can be explained by the clustering of the frontier orbitals. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
