Abstract
Coexistence and switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single molecular magnet (SMM) behaviours in one single complex may lead to materials that exhibit bi-stable and stimuli sensitive properties in a wide temperature range and under multiple conditions; unfortunately, the conflict and dilemma in the principle of approaching SCO and SMM molecules make it particularly difficult; at low temperature, low spin (LS) SCO molecules possess highly symmetrical geometry and isotropic spins, which are not suitable for SMM behaviour. Herein, we overcome this issue by using a rationally designed Co(II) mononuclear complex [Co(MeOphterpy)2] (ClO4)2 (1; MeOphterpy = 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), the magnetic properties of which reversibly respond to desolvation and solvation. The solvated structure reinforced a low distortion of the coordination sphere via hydrogen bonding between ligands and methanol molecules, while in the desolvated structure a methoxy group flipping occurred, increasing the distortion of the coordination sphere and stabilising the HS state at low temperature, which exhibited a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, resulting in a reversible switching between SCO and SMM properties within one molecule.

Abstract
New CoII substituted malonate field-induced molecular magnets {[Rb6Co3(cpdc)6(H2O)12]∙6H2O}n (1) and [Cs2Co(cpdc)2(H2O)6]n (2) (where cpdc2− stands for cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid dianions) were synthesized. Both compounds contain mononuclear bischelate fragments {CoII(cpdc)2(H2O)2}2− where the quasi-octahedral cobalt environment (CoO6) is complemented by water molecules in apical positions. The alkali metal atoms play the role of connectors between the bischelate fragments to form 3D and 2D polymeric structures for 1 and 2, respectively. Analysis of dc magnetic data using the parametric Griffith Hamiltonian for high-spin CoII supported by ab initio calculations revealed that both compounds have an easy axis of magnetic anisotropy. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external magnetic field (HDC = 1000 and 1500 Oe, respectively).

Abstract
Magnetoactive coordination compounds exhibiting bi- or multistability between two or more magnetic stable states present an attractive example of molecular switches. Currently, the research is focused on molecular nanomagnets, especially single molecule magnets (SMMs), which are molecules, where the slow relaxation of the magnetization based on the purely molecular origin is observed. Contrary to ferromagnets, the magnetic bistability of SMMs does not require intermolecular interactions, which makes them particularly interesting in terms of application potential, especially in the high-density storage of data. This paper aims to introduce the readers into a basic understanding of SMM behaviour, and furthermore, it provides an overview of the attractive Co(II) SMMs with emphasis on the relation between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes. Abstract
Two five-coordinate mononuclear Co(ii) complexes [Co(12-TMC)X][B(C6H5)4] (L = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (12-TMC), X = Cl- (1), Br- (2)) have been studied by X-ray single crystallography, magnetic measurements, high-frequency and -field EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Both complexes have a distorted square pyramidal geometry with the Co(ii) ion lying above the basal plane constrained by the rigid tetradentate macrocyclic ligand. In contrast to the reported five-coordinate Co(ii) complex [Co(12-TMC)(NCO)][B(C6H5)4] (3) exhibiting easy-axis anisotropy, an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy was found for 1 and 2via the analyses of the direct-current magnetic data and HF-EPR spectroscopy. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated that complexes 1 and 2 show slow magnetic relaxation at an applied dc field. Ab initio calculations were performed to reveal the impact of the terminal ligands on the nature of the magnetic anisotropies of this series of five-coordinate Co(ii) complexes.

Abstract
Tuning the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly interesting in the design of improved single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein report synthetic, structural, magnetic, and computational studies of four mononuclear CoII complexes, namely [Co(hfac)2 (MeCN)2 ] (1), [Co(hfac)2 (Spy)2 ] (2), [Co(hfac)2 (MBIm)2 ] (3), and [Co(hfac)2 (DMF)2 ] (4) (MeCN=acetonitrile, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetone, Spy=4-styrylpyridine, MbIm=5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with distorted octahedral geometry constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) and various axial ligands. By a building block approach, complexes 2-4 were synthesized by recrystallization of the starting material of 1 from various ligands containing solution. Magnetic and theoretical studies reveal that 1-4 possess large positive D values and relative small E parameters, indicating easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with significant rhombic anisotropy in 1-4. Dynamic alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, suggesting field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) of 1-4. These results provide a promising platform to achieve fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy through varying the axial ligands based on Co(II) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes.

Abstract
A tridentate ligand L (2,6-bis(1-(3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) was synthesized and used for the preparation of three pentacoordinated Co(ii) complexes of formula [Co(L)X2] (where X = NCS- for 1, X = Cl- for 2 and X = Br- for 3) and one ionic compound 4 ([Co(L)2]Br2·2CH3OH·H2O) containing a hexacoordinated Co(ii) centre. Static magnetic data were analysed with respect to the spin (1-3) or the Griffith-Figgis (4) Hamiltonian. Ab initio calculations enable us to identify the positive axial magnetic anisotropy parameter D accompanied by a significant degree of rhombicity in the reported complexes. Also, magneto-structural correlation was outlined for this class of compounds. Moreover, all four compounds exhibit slow relaxation of magnetisation at an applied static magnetic field with either both low- and high-frequency relaxation channels (3) or a single high-frequency relaxation process (1, 2 and 4). The interplay between the stereochemistry of coordination polyhedra, magnetic anisotropy and the relaxation processes was investigated and discussed in detail.

Abstract
The employment of a new rigid N-tridentate ligand, bis(1-chloroimidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-yl)pyridine (bcpp), in the construction of cobalt(II) single-ion magnets is reported. Two cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(bcpp)Cl2 ] (1) and [Co(bcpp)Br2 ] (2), have been prepared and characterized. Single-crystal XRD analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural. They are pentacoordinated mononuclear cobalt(II) compounds with expected trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Both analysis of the magnetic data and ab initio calculations reveal easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D>0) for 1 and 2. Detailed alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the occurrence of slow magnetic relaxation behavior for the cobalt(II) centers of 1 and 2; thus indicating that both complexes are field-induced single-ion magnets.

Abstract
Three mononuclear six-coordinate Co(ii)-pseudohalide complexes [Co(L)X2] with two N-donor pseudohalido coligands occupying the cis-positions (X = NCS- (1), NCSe- (2) or N(CN)2- (3)), and a five-coordinate complex [Co(L)(NCO)][B(C6H5)4] (4) [L = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (12-TMC)] have been prepared and structurally characterized. Easy-plane magnetic anisotropy for 1-3 and easy-axis anisotropy for 4 were revealed via the analyses of the direct-current magnetic data, high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectra and ab initio theoretical calculations. They display slow magnetic relaxations under an external applied dc field. Typically, two slow relaxation processes were found in 1 and 2 while only one relaxation process occurs in 3 and 4. The Raman-like mechanism is found to be dominant in the studied temperature range in 1. For 2-4, the Raman process is dominant in the low temperature region, while the Orbach mechanism dominates in the high temperature range.

Cobalt(ii) benzoate trihydrate prepared by the reaction of CoCO3 with benzoic acid (HBz) in boiling water followed by crystallization has been structurally characterized as a chain-like system with the formula unit [Co(Bz)(H2O)2]Bz·H2O where the Co(ii) atoms are triply linked by one bridging syn-syn benzoato (Bz) and two aqua ligands; additional benzoate counter ions and solvate water molecules are present in the crystal structure. DC magnetic measurements reveal a sizable exchange coupling of a ferromagnetic nature between the Co(ii) atoms. At TN = 5.5 K the paramagnetic phase switches to the antiferromagnetic phase. Though the remnant magnetization is zero, the magnetization curve shows two lobes of a hysteresis loop and the DC relaxation experiments confirm a long relaxation time at T = 2.0 K. AC susceptibility data confirm a slow relaxation of magnetization even in the antiferromagnetic phase. In the absence of the magnetic field, two relaxation channels exist. The relaxation time for the low frequency channel is as slow as τLF > 1.6 s and data fitting yields τLF (2.1 K) = 14 s. The high-frequency relaxation time obeys the Orbach process at a higher temperature whereas the Raman process dominates the low-temperature region. Three slow relaxation channels are evidenced at the applied magnetic field BDC = 0.1 T.

Abstract
A [Co(N3)2(mqu)] complex with a 1D chain architecture (mqu - 4-methylquinoline) displays the paramagnetic behaviour with a slight exchange interaction of antiferromagnetic nature among Co(ii) centres. It shows slow magnetic relaxation with three distinct modes. The relaxation time strongly depends upon the applied external field. The slowest relaxation time refers to the low-frequency mode τLF = 1.6(2) s at BDC = 0.8 T and T = 1.9 K.

Abstract
One-pot reaction between 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxaldehyde (HQC) and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) followed by in situ cyclization yielded an oxazolidine based ligand which produced four mononuclear complexes of MnII(1), CoII(2), NiII(3), ZnII(4), a tetranuclear iron (FeIII4) complex (5) and a trinuclear cobalt (CoIICoIII2) complex (6). Magnetic studies show dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in tetranuclear iron (FeIII4) complex 5 and presence of the slow relaxation of magnetisation in 6. The compounds were also studied for their antibacterial properties. The oxazolidine ligand (H3L2) of this study showed good antimicrobial activity not only against Gram-positive bacteria but against Gram-negative bacteria too. The antimicrobial efficacy of the metal complexes (1-6) is also reported.

Abstract
A mononuclear complex [Co(neo)(PhCOO)2] was prepared in two polymorphic forms, which both possess large magnetic anisotropy with different degrees of rhombicity. Furthermore, both polymorphs behave as field-induced single-ion magnets.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear [M(hfa)2(pic)2] (Hhfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione; pic = 4-methylpyridine; M = FeII, CoII, NiII, ZnII) compounds were obtained and characterized. The structures of the complexes have been resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, indicating that, apart from the zinc derivative, the complexes are in a trans configuration. Moreover, a dramatic lenghthening of the Fe-N distances was observed, whereas the nickel(II) complex is almost perfectly octahedral. The magnetic anisotropy of these complexes was thoroughly studied by direct-current (dc) magnetic measurements, high-field electron paramagnetic resonance, and infrared (IR) magnetospectroscopy: the iron(II) derivative exhibits an out-of-plane anisotropy (DFe = -7.28 cm-1) with a high rhombicity, whereas the cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes show in-plane anisotropy (DCo ∼ 92-95 cm-1; DNi = 4.920 cm-1). Ab initio calculations were performed to rationalize the evolution of the structure and identify the excited states governing the magnetic anisotropy along the series. For the iron(II) complex, an out-of-phase alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility signal was observed using a 0.1 T dc field. For the cobalt(II) derivative, the ac magnetic susceptibility shows the presence of two field-dependent relaxation phenomena: at low field (500 Oe), the relaxation process is beyond single-ion behavior, whereas at high field (2000 Oe), the relaxation of magnetization implies several mechanisms including an Orbach process with Ueff = 25 K and quantum tunneling of magnetization. The observation by μ-SQUID magnetization measurements of hysteresis loops of up to 1 K confirmed the single-ion-magnet behavior of the cobalt(II) derivative.
