Solvation/desolvation induced reversible distortion change and switching between spin crossover and single molecular magnet behaviour in a cobalt(II) complex

Coexistence and switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single molecular magnet (SMM) behaviours in one single complex may lead to materials that exhibit bi-stable and stimuli sensitive properties in a wide temperature range and under multiple conditions; unfortunately, the conflict and dilemma in the principle of approaching SCO and SMM molecules make it particularly difficult; at low temperature, low spin (LS) SCO molecules possess highly symmetrical geometry and isotropic spins, which are not suitable for SMM behaviour. Herein, we overcome this issue by using a rationally designed Co(II) mononuclear complex [Co(MeOphterpy)2] (ClO4)2 (1; MeOphterpy = 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), the magnetic properties of which reversibly respond to desolvation and solvation. The solvated structure reinforced a low distortion of the coordination sphere via hydrogen bonding between ligands and methanol molecules, while in the desolvated structure a methoxy group flipping occurred, increasing the distortion of the coordination sphere and stabilising the HS state at low temperature, which exhibited a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, resulting in a reversible switching between SCO and SMM properties within one molecule.

Evidence for zero-field slow magnetic relaxation in a Co(II) complex with a pseudo-tetrahedral N2I2 environment

Herein, we report on the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) diiodide complex with the 3,5-dimethylpyrazole ligand. A distorted tetrahedral local coordination environment around the central cobalt ion is formed by the two nitrogen atoms of two monodentate pyrazole ligands and by iodide ions. Direct current (dc) magnetic measurements in combination with ab initio SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum-chemical calculations revealed a strong easy-axis-type magnetic anisotropy with a record value D_exp = -30.58(3) cm^-1 of the axial zero field splitting parameter for pseudo-tetrahedral Co(II)-based CoL₂Hal₂ complexes. Moreover, it is the only complex in this series demonstrating the slow relaxation of magnetization at zero dc field. The Orbach process is shown to be the dominant mechanism of magnetic relaxations in the high temperature range, while the quantum tunneling of magnetization produces the leading contribution to the overall relaxation at temperatures below 4 K.

Co(II) single-ion magnets: synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties

Magnetoactive coordination compounds exhibiting bi- or multistability between two or more magnetic stable states present an attractive example of molecular switches. Currently, the research is focused on molecular nanomagnets, especially single molecule magnets (SMMs), which are molecules, where the slow relaxation of the magnetization based on the purely molecular origin is observed. Contrary to ferromagnets, the magnetic bistability of SMMs does not require intermolecular interactions, which makes them particularly interesting in terms of application potential, especially in the high-density storage of data. This paper aims to introduce the readers into a basic understanding of SMM behaviour, and furthermore, it provides an overview of the attractive Co(II) SMMs with emphasis on the relation between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes.

Building-up host-guest helicate motifs and chains: a magneto-structural study of new field-induced cobalt-based single-ion magnets

In this work, we present the synthetic pathway, a refined structural description, complete solid-state characterization and the magnetic properties of four new cobalt(ii) compounds of formulas [Co(H₂O)₆][Co₂(H₂mpba)₃]·2H₂O·0.5dmso (1), [Co(H₂O)₆][Co₂(H₂mpba)₃]·3H₂O·0.5dpss (2), [Co₂(H₂mpba)₂(H₂O)₄]_n·4nH₂O (3), and [Co₂(H₂mpba)₂(CH₃OH)₂(H₂O)₂]_n·0.5nH₂O·2ndpss (4) [dpss = 2,2'-dipyridyldisulfide and H₄mpba = 1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic) acid], where 2 and 4 were obtained from [Co(dpss)Cl₂] (Pre-I) as the source of cobalt(ii). All four compounds are air-stable and were prepared under ambient conditions. 1 and 2 were obtained from a slow diffusion method [cobalt(ii) : H₂mpba^2- molar ratio used 1 : 1] and their structures are made up of [Co₂(H₂mpba)₃]^2- anionic helicate units and [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ cations, exhibiting supramolecular three-dimensional structures. Interestingly, a supramolecular honeycomb network between the helicate units interacting with each other through R₂²(10) type hydrogen bonds occurs in 2 hosting one co-crystallized dpss molecule. On the other hand, for the first time, linear (3) and zigzag (4) cobalt(ii) chains were isolated by slow evaporation of stirred solutions of mixed solvents with cobalt(ii) : H₂mpba^2- in 1 : 2 molar ratio at room temperature. Magnetic measurements of Pre-I revealed a quasi magnetically isolated S = 3/2 spin state with a significant second-order spin-orbit contribution as expected for tetrahedrally coordinated cobalt(ii) ions. The analysis of the variable temperature static (dc) magnetic susceptibility data through first- (1 and 3) and second-order spin-orbit coupling models (2 and 4) reveals the presence of magnetically non-interacting high-spin cobalt(ii) ions with easy-axis (1 and 4)/easy-plane magnetic anisotropies (2 and 4) with low rhombic distortions. Dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements for Pre-I and 1-4 below 8.0 K show that they are examples of field-induced Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs).

Hydrogen bond-induced abrupt spin crossover behaviour in 1-D cobalt(II) complexes - the key role of solvate water molecules

The magnetic properties and structural aspects of the 1-D cobalt(ii) complexes, [Co(pyterpy)Cl2]·2H2O (1·2H2O; pyterpy = 4'-(4'''-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) and [Co(pyethyterpy)Cl2]·2H2O (2·2H2O; pyethyterpy = 4'-((4'''-pyridyl)ethynyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) are reported. In each complex the central cobalt(ii) ion displays an octahedral coordination environment composed of three nitrogen donors from the terpyridine moiety, a nitrogen donor from a pyridyl group and two chloride ligands which occupy the axial sites. 1·2H2O exhibits abrupt spin-crossover (SCO) behaviour (T1/2↓ = 218 K; T1/2↑ = 227 K) along with a thermal hysteresis loop, while 2·2H2O and the dehydrated species 1 and 2 exhibit high-spin (HS) states at 2-300 K as well as field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour attributed to the presence of magnetic anisotropic HS cobalt(ii) species (S = 3/2). 1·2H2O exhibited reversible desorption/resorption of its two water molecules, revealing reversible switching between SCO and SMM behaviour triggered by the dehydration/rehydration processes. Single crystal X-ray structural analyses revealed that 1·2H2O crystalizes in the orthorhombic space group Pcca while 2 and 2·2H2O crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2/n. Each of the 1-D chains formed by 1·2H2O in the solid state are bridged by hydrogen bonds between water molecules and chloride groups to form a 2-D layered structure. The water molecules bridging 1-D chains in 1·2H2O interact with the chloride ligands occupying the axial positions, complementing the effect of Jahn-Teller distortion and contributing to the abrupt SCO behaviour and associated stabilization of the LS state.

A Series of Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnets Based on the Seven-Coordinate Co(II) Complexes with the Pentadentate (N3O2) H2dapsc Ligand

A series of five new mononuclear pentagonal bipyramidal Co(II) complexes with the equatorial 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) ligand (H2dapsc) and various axial pseudohalide ligands (SCN, SeCN, N(CN)2, C(CN)3, and N3) was prepared and structurally characterizated: [Co(H2dapsc)(SCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (1), [Co(H2dapsc)(SeCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (2), [Co(H2dapsc)(N(CN)2)2]∙2H2O (3), [Co(H2dapsc)(C(CN)3)(H2O)](NO3)∙1.16H2O (4), and {[Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)(N3)][Co(H2dapsc)(N3)2]}N3∙4H2O (5). The combined analyses of the experimental DС and AC magnetic data of the complexes (1–5) and two other earlier described those of this family [Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)2)](NO3)2∙2H2O (6) and [Co(H2dapsc)(Cl)(H2O)]Cl∙2H2O (7), their theoretical description and the ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations reveal large easy-plane magnetic anisotropies for all complexes (D = + 35 − 40 cm‒1). All complexes under consideration demonstrate slow magnetic relaxation with dominant Raman and direct spin–phonon processes at static magnetic field and so they belong to the class of field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs).

Exceptionally slow magnetic relaxation in cobalt(ii) benzoate trihydrate

Cobalt(ii) benzoate trihydrate prepared by the reaction of CoCO₃ with benzoic acid (HBz) in boiling water followed by crystallization has been structurally characterized as a chain-like system with the formula unit [Co(Bz)(H₂O)₂]Bz·H₂O where the Co(ii) atoms are triply linked by one bridging syn-syn benzoato (Bz) and two aqua ligands; additional benzoate counter ions and solvate water molecules are present in the crystal structure. DC magnetic measurements reveal a sizable exchange coupling of a ferromagnetic nature between the Co(ii) atoms. At T_N = 5.5 K the paramagnetic phase switches to the antiferromagnetic phase. Though the remnant magnetization is zero, the magnetization curve shows two lobes of a hysteresis loop and the DC relaxation experiments confirm a long relaxation time at T = 2.0 K. AC susceptibility data confirm a slow relaxation of magnetization even in the antiferromagnetic phase. In the absence of the magnetic field, two relaxation channels exist. The relaxation time for the low frequency channel is as slow as τ_LF > 1.6 s and data fitting yields τ_LF (2.1 K) = 14 s. The high-frequency relaxation time obeys the Orbach process at a higher temperature whereas the Raman process dominates the low-temperature region. Three slow relaxation channels are evidenced at the applied magnetic field B_DC = 0.1 T.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a μ1,1'-azido cobalt(ii) methylquinoline chain complex

A [Co(N3)2(mqu)] complex with a 1D chain architecture (mqu - 4-methylquinoline) displays the paramagnetic behaviour with a slight exchange interaction of antiferromagnetic nature among Co(ii) centres. It shows slow magnetic relaxation with three distinct modes. The relaxation time strongly depends upon the applied external field. The slowest relaxation time refers to the low-frequency mode τLF = 1.6(2) s at BDC = 0.8 T and T = 1.9 K.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a {CoIICo} complex containing a high magnetic anisotropy trigonal bipyramidal CoII centre

We report a trinuclear mixed-valence {CoIICoIII2} complex, where the CoII centre adopts a trigonal bipyramidal geometry, leading to a large, easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with a Raman-like relaxation process.

A mononuclear Co(ii) complex formed from pyridinedimethanol with manifold slow relaxation channels

A mononuclear hexacoordinate complex [Co(pydm)₂](dnbz)₂ formed from 2,6-pyridinedimethanol in the coordination sphere of Co(ii) and dinitrobenzoato anions exhibits magnetic anisotropy of an easy axis type and a field induced slow magnetic relaxation with manifold relaxation channels. The low-frequency relaxation time is as slow as τ_LF = 0.13 s at B_DC = 0.4 T and T = 1.9 K.

Two polymorphic Co(ii) field-induced single-ion magnets with enormous angular distortion from the ideal octahedron

Syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two mixed-valence Co(iii)Co(ii) compounds derived from Schiff base ligands: field-supported single-ion-magnet behavior with easy-plane anisotropy

Two μ-phenoxo-μ_1,1-azide dinuclear Co^IIICo^II complexes [Co^III(N₃)₂L¹(μ_1,1-N₃)Co^II(N₃)]·MeOH (1) and [Co^III(N₃)₂L²(μ_1,1-N₃)Co^II(N₃)]·MeOH (2) (HL¹ and HL² are two Schiff base ligands having N₂O-N₂O compartments) both possess one hexacoordinate Co(iii) and one pentacoordinate Co(ii) center. DC magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements show an appreciable amount of positive magnetic anisotropy (D/hc∼ 40 cm^-1) that is also confirmed by ab initio CASSCF calculations. AC susceptibility measurements of 1 reveal that it exhibits a slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation channels. The external magnetic field supports the low-frequency (LF) channel that escapes on heating more progressively than the high-frequency (HF) branch. The relaxation time is as slow as τ = 255 ms at T = 1.9 K and B_DC = 0.6 T, where the LF mole fraction is 69%. The complex 2 also displays similar field-supported slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation channels.

Evidence of field induced slow magnetic relaxation in cis-[Co(hfac)2(H2O)2] exhibiting tri-axial anisotropy with a negative axial component
