Coordination Chemistry of the Redox Non-Innocent Ligand Bis(2-amino-3,5-di-tert -butylphenyl)amine with Group 10 Metal Ions (Ni, Pd, Pt)

Rhodium Diamidobenzene Complexes: A Tale of Different Substituents on the Diamidobenzene Ligand

Diamidobenzene ligands are a prominent class of redox-active ligands owing to their electron reservoir behaviour, as well as the possibility of tuning the steric and the electronic properties of such ligands through the substituents on the N-atoms of the ligands. In this contribution, we present Rh(iii) complexes with four differently substituted diamidobenzene ligands. By using a combination of crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, UV-vis-NIR/EPR spectroelectrochemistry, and quantum chemical calculations we show that the substituents on the ligands have a profound influence on the bonding, donor, electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the Rh complexes. We present, for the first time, design strategies for the isolation of mononuclear Rh(ii) metallates whose redox potentials span across more than 850 mV. These Rh(ii) metallates undergo typical metalloradical reactivity such as activation of O₂ and C–Cl bond activations. Additionally, we also show that the substituents on the ligands dictate the one versus two electron nature of the oxidation steps of the Rh complexes. Furthermore, the oxidative reactivity of the metal complexes with a [CH₃]⁺ source leads to the isolation of a unprecedented, homobimetallic, heterovalent complex featuring a novel π-bonded rhodio-o-diiminoquionone. Our results thus reveal several new potentials of the diamidobenzene ligand class in organometallic reactivity and small molecule activation with potential relevance for catalysis.

Diamidobenzene ligands are versatile platforms in organometallic Rh-chemistry. They allow the isolation of tunable mononuclear ate-complexes, and the formation of a unprecedented homobimetallic, heterovalent complex.

Ancillary ligand electro-activity effects towards phenyl acetylene homocoupling reaction by a nickel(ii) complex of a non-innocent O-amino phenol ligand: a mechanistic insight

A new Ni(ii) complex, was synthesized from the reaction of a non-innocent o-aminophenol ligand, and Ni(OAc)₂. The crystal structure of Ni^IIL₂^NIS (in which, IS stands for iminosemiquinone radical ligand with cyanide (shown by N in NIS) substituent on phenolate rings) exhibits the square planar environment of Ni(ii). The complex has been crystalized in the monoclinic system and Ni(ii) was surrounded by two oxygen and two nitrogen atoms of two ligands. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurement for crystalline samples of complex shows the effective magnetic moment per molecule (μ_eff) of near zero and the diamagnetic nature of the complex (S = 0) which emphasize that strong antiferromagnetic coupling prevailed between the two unpaired electrons of L^NIS ligands and Ni(ii) high spin electrons. The complex is EPR silent which confirms the diamagnetic character of the Ni(ii) complex. Electrochemical measurement (CV) indicates the redox-active character of ligand and metal. Ni^IIL₂^NIS complex proved to be effective for free metal- or base counterpart homocoupling of phenyl acetylene at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of using Ni(ii) complex without using any reducing agent due to the promotion ancillary effect of non-innocent o-aminophenol ligand which acts as an “electron reservoir” and can reversibly accept and donate electrons in the catalytic cycle. The theoretical calculation confirms the magnetostructure, electronic spectrum and confirmed the suggested mechanism of phenyl acetylene homocoupling with emphasis on the role of non-innocent ligand electro-activity and the effect of ligand substituent on the efficiency and stability of the complex.

Stable M(II)-Radicals and Nickel(III) Complexes of a Bis(phenol) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chelated to Group 10 Metal Ions

The tetradentate ligand based on (1-imidazolium-3,5-di tert-butylphenol) units was prepared and chelated to group 10 metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II), and Pt(II)), affording complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The X-ray crystal structures of 1-3 show a square planar metal ion coordinated to two N-heterocyclic carbenes and two phenolate moieties. The cyclic voltammetry curves of complexes 1-3 show two reversible oxidation waves in the range 0.11-0.21 V ( E_1/2¹) and 0.55-0.65 V ( E_1/2²) vs Fc⁺/Fc, which are assigned to the successive oxidations of the phenolate moieties. One-electron oxidation affords mononuclear ( S = 1/2) systems. Complex 1⁺·SbF₆^- was remarkably stable, and its structure was characterized. The coordination sphere is slightly dissymmetric, while the typical patterns of phenoxyl radicals were observed within the ligand framework. Complex 1⁺ exhibits a rhombic signal at g = 2.087, 2.016, and 1.992, confirming its predominant phenoxyl radical character. The g-values are slightly smaller for 2⁺ (2.021, 2.008, and 1.983) and larger for 3⁺ (2.140, 1.999, and 1.885) yet consistent with phenoxyl radical species. The electronic spectra of 1⁺-3⁺ display an intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transition at 2396, 2600, and 2294 nm, respectively. Its intensity supports the description of cations 1⁺ and 3⁺ as mixed-valent (Class II/III) compounds according to the Robin Day classification. Complex 2⁺ behaves as a mixed-valent class II radical compound. In the presence of pyridine, radical species 1⁺ is successively converted into stable mono and bis(adducts), which are both Ni(III) complexes. Dications 1⁺²-3⁺² were prepared electrochemically. They are electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-silent and do not show IVCT transition in their NIR spectra, consistent with a bis(radical) formulation. The proposed electronic structures are fully supported by density functional theory calculations.

Metal–ligand cooperativity can be used in iridium complexes with an unsymmetrically substituted redox-active diamidobenzene ligand for bond activation reactions.

Structural snapshots of the rearrangement of the bis(di-tert-butyl-aminophenyl)amine pincer ligand in the presence of transition metal ions

The bis(di-tert-butyl-aminophenyl)amine ligand H3LN,N,N was reacted with Mn(ii), Co(ii), Fe(iii) and Cu(ii) salts in air. The ligand undergoes oxidative transformations, which involve intra and intermolecular C-N and N-N bond formations. A rare aromatic C-N bond cleavage leading to a C-O bond has also been observed.

Isolation of reactive Ln(ii) complexes with C5H4Me ligands (CpMe) using inverse sandwich countercations: synthesis and structure of [(18-crown-6)K(μ-CpMe)K(18-crown-6)][CpMe3LnII] (Ln = Tb, Ho)

We report that crystallographically-characterizable Ln(ii) complexes of Tb and Ho can be isolated by reducing Cp^Me₃Ln(THF) with KC₈ in THF in the presence of 18-crown-6 (18-c-6).
