A Luminescent pH-Responsive Ternary Europium(III) Complex of β-Diketonates and Terpyridine Derivatives as Sensitizing Antennae - Photophysical Aspects, Anion Sensing, and Biological Interactions

Photoluminescence lifetime stability studies of β-diketonate europium complexes based phenanthroline derivatives in poly(methyl methacrylate) films

In this work, five phenanthroline derivatives substituted with different methyl groups have been selected to synthesize β-diketonate-based europium complexes to check the influence of the substitutions on the degradation effect of those complexes in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films. The photophysical properties of Eu(III) complexes, including absorbance, excitation, and emission have been carefully investigated in solution, solid-state, and doped in PMMA film. In all these states, the complexes exhibit an impressive red emission at 614 nm with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 85 %. The films have been exposed under outdoor, indoor, and dark storage stability lifetime conditions for 1200 hours. The photoluminescence measurements recorded every 400, 800, and 1200 hours demonstrated that the film containing europium complex with phenanthroline ligand substituted by a high number of methyl groups (Eu(TTA)3L5) showed good photoluminescent stability in indoor and dark conditions, and exhibited better resistance to degradation in outdoor conditions compared to other complexes. This study has proved that phenanthroline ligands could be tuned chemically leading to better stability of those types of complexes in films which can be end-used for future stable optoelectronic devices such as luminescent solar concentrators.

Blocking Metal Nanocluster Growth through Ligand Coordination and Subsequent Polymerization: The Case of Ruthenium Nanoclusters as Robust Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding hydrogen evolution activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. Herein, a possibility of blocking metal ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation to produce highly active Ru nanoclusters supported on an N, S co-doped carbon matrix (Ru/NSC) is demonstrated. To stabilize the nanocluster dispersion, Ru species are initially coordinated through multiple Ru─N bonds with N-rich 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2:6',2''-terpyridine (TPY-NH2) ligands that are subsequently polymerized using a Schiff base. After the pyrolysis of the hybrid composite, highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoclusters with an average size of 1.55 nm are obtained. The optimized Ru/NSC displays minimal overpotentials and high turnover frequencies, as well as robust durability both in alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Besides, outstanding mass activities of 3.85 A mg-1 Ru at 50 mV, i.e., 16 fold higher than 20 wt.% Pt/C are reached. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the outstanding performance by revealing that the low d-band center of Ru/NSC allows the desorption of *H intermediates, thereby enhancing the alkaline HER activity. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to engineering cost-effective and robust electrocatalysts based on carbon-supported transition metal nanoclusters for future energy technologies.

Elucidating Bacterial Spore Dynamics through Lanthanide-Enhanced Live Imaging

Identifying and distinguishing dormant and active bacterial spores are vital for biosecurity, food safety, and space exploration. Yet, there is a lack of simple, quick, and nondestructive methods to achieve this. The common Schaeffer-Fulton method is both sample-destructive and requires significant operator involvement. In this study, we employed lanthanide-beta-diketonate complexes to directly observe both dormant and germinated single spores. Staining is instantaneous and requires minimal sample processing. The complex stains areas outside the core of dormant spores, leaving the core hollow and nonfluorescent. However, upon germination, the complex enters the core, making it brightly fluorescent. This difference was noted in five bacterial species including Bacillus, Clostridium, and Clostridioides. Various lanthanides and beta-diketonates can be mixed to form a range of spore-visualizing complexes. Due to their low toxicity, these complexes allow for live imaging of single germinating spores. We demonstrate low-cost imaging using a USB microscope as well as imaging of spores in milk matrices. This method provides a valuable tool for studying bacterial spores.

Investigations into spectroscopic and optoelectronic behavior of furoic acid based Eu (III) complexes for advanced photonic applications

For illuminising the zone of organic light-emitting diodes, a novel series containing four red luminescent europium complexes, one binary (C1) and three ternary (C2-C4), of 5-phenyl 2-furoic acid (PFA) has been synthesized with 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy), bathophenanthroline (batho) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as ancillary ligands and characterized by adopting various analytical techniques. All the findings of EDAX, elemental (CHN) analysis, FT-IR, NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy assures the coordination of ligand binding sites with the europium ion. To evaluate the thermal stability, TG/DTG measurements are taken which reveals that the synthesized complexes are stable up to 245 ⁰ C. Diffused reflectance studies indicate that these complexes bear potential for their use in wide band gap semiconductors (WBGs). Since all the four complexes show metal-centered luminescence as a characteristic red emission peak which is observed at 613 nm under the excitation wavelength of 330 nm. The internal quantum efficiencies and luminescence lifetime of complexes are predicted by using Judd-Ofelt and photo physical data. The monoexponential luminescence decay and Judd-Ofelt analysis suggests the presence of single and asymmetric chemical environment in the coordination sphere of europium metal. The CIE colour coordinates, CCT values and color purity of the complexes validate their red emission in the visible region.

Trinuclear Organometallic Pt-Ir-Pt Complexes: Insights into Photophysical Properties, Amino Acid Binding and Protein Sensing

The rational synthesis of trinuclear emissive organometallic complexes with two equivalent platinum(II) centres appended to the ancillary substituted 2,2'-bipyridyl ligand of the cyclometalated iridium(III) centre is reported here. The alkynyl-platinum moiety and cyclometalated iridium(III) centres have been separated through a non-conjugated CH₂ -O-CH₂ linkage. The emission titration with amino acids reveals that the complexes sense free amino acids. The luminescence sensing of BSA is thus attributed to the amino acid sensing ability of the complexes and confirmed by emission anisotropy and Far-UV CD spectral study. The decrease in α-helix in the CD spectra signifies the changes in the secondary structure of protein in presence of the complexes.

Terpyridine-Functionalized Calixarenes: Synthesis, Characterization and Anion Sensing Applications

Lanthanide complexes have been developed and are reported herein. These complexes were derived from a terpyridine-functionalized calix[4]arene ligand, chelated with Tb3+ and Eu3+. Synthesis of these complexes was achieved in two steps from a calix[4]arene derivative: (1) amide coupling of a calix[4]arene bearing carboxylic acid functionalities and (2) metallation with a lanthanide triflate salt. The ligand and its complexes were characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as MS. The photophysical properties of these complexes were studied; high molar absorptivity values, modest quantum yields and luminescence lifetimes on the ms timescale were obtained. Anion binding results in a change in the photophysical properties of the complexes. The anion sensing ability of the Tb(III) complex was evaluated via visual detection, UV-vis and fluorescence studies. The sensor was found to be responsive towards a variety of anions, and large binding constants were obtained for the coordination of anions to the sensor.

Molecular recognition and sensing of dicarboxylates and dicarboxylic acids

The recognition and detection of dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates is of significance for a wide variety of applications, including medical diagnosis, monitoring of health and of environmental contaminants, and in industry. Hence small molecule receptors and sensors for dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates have great potential for applications in these fields. This review outlines the challenges faced in the recognition and detection of these species, strategies that have been used to obtain effective and observable interactions with dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates, and progress made in this field in the period from 2014 to 2020.

Luminescent Europium(III) "Turn-On" Sensor for G-Series Chemical Warfare Simulants: A Mechanistic Investigation

A thermodynamically stable terpyridine-dicarboxylate based emissive Eu(III) probe, [Eu(OH-TPDC)] (1), was designed as a time-resolved "turn-on" luminescent probe for the selective sensing of diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP), a G-series nerve agent simulant through modulation of sensitization of ⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J transitions from Eu(III) via quenching of nonradiative vibrational energy transfer.

Luminescence Tunable Europium and Samarium Complexes: Reversible On/Off Switching and White-Light Emission

Single-molecule functional materials with luminescence tunable by external stimuli are of increasing interest due to their application in sensors, display devices, biomarkers, and switches. Herein, new europium and samarium complexes with ligands having triphenylamine (TPA) groups as the redox center and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the coordinating groups and diketonate (tta) as the second ligand have been constructed. The complexes show white-light emission in selected solvents for proper mixtures of the emission from Ln³⁺ ions and the ligands. Meanwhile, they exhibit reversible luminescence switching on/off properties by controlling the external potential owing to intramolecular energy transfer from the Ln³⁺ ions to the electrochemically generated radical cation of TPA^•+. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed to study the electronic spectra. The proposed intramolecular energy transfer processes have been verified by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

A luminescent pH-sensitive lysosome targeting Eu(iii) probe

A pH-responsive, water soluble luminescent Eu(iii) probe is designed to target lysosomes via intrinsic f–f emission from the Eu(iii) centre.
