Lanthanide Phosphonates and Phosphates in Molecular Magnetism

Phosphonate and phosphate ligands have historically received less attention when compared to the widely prevalent carboxylate ligand system. Phosphonates possess multiple donating sites, often leading to the formation of larger aggregates with limited solubility. Conversely, the P-O bond within phosphates is highly susceptible to hydrolysis, resulting in the precipitation of insoluble compounds, particularly when interacting with lanthanide metal ions. However, over the past few decades, various synthetic approaches have emerged for the preparation and characterization of lanthanide complexes involving both phosphonate and phosphate ligands. Consequently, researchers have delved into exploring the magnetic properties of these complexes, such as their potential as single molecule magnets (SMMs) and their ability to exhibit a magnetocaloric effect (MCE). This review will encompass an examination of the crystal structures and magnetic characteristics of lanthanide complexes featuring phosphonate and phosphate ligands.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic studies of hexanuclear lanthanide complexes: SMM behavior of the DyIII analogue and MCE properties of the GdIII analogue

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of homometallic hexanuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln6(HL)4(tfa)4(S)2]·2NO3·x H2O·yMeOH (1, Ln = Gd, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 0; 2, Ln = Tb, S = H2O, x = 2, y = 2; 3, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2; 4, Ln = Er, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2). [(H4L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide) (tfa = trifloroacetylacetone)] are reported. These hexanuclear assemblies are made up of two trinuclear triangular sub-units linked through the oxygen atoms of two phenoxide bridging groups in a corner sharing arrangement. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 displays a magnetocaloric effect with a maximum value of -ΔSm = 21.03 J kg-1 K-1 at T = 3 K and under an applied field change ΔB = 5 T. Complex 3 shows slow relaxation of magnetization even under zero applied field although a clear maximum in the ac susceptibility plots cannot be seen. However, under an optimal applied field of 0.2 T, clear maxima are observed in the out-of-phase (χ''M) component of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range 3.5 K (2 kHz) to 10.5 K (10 kHz). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times could be fitted to the sum of Orbach, Raman and QTM relaxation processes affording the following parameters: τo = 3.4(9) × 10-8 s, Ueff = 94(2) K, BRaman = 16.43(1) K-n s-1, n = 3.2(3) and τQTM = 0.0044(3) s. 4, under an applied magnetic field of 0.2 T, shows slow relaxation of magnetization through a thermally activated Orbach process with Ueff = 18.2(9) K and τo = 3.5(3) × 10-8 s.

Fluoride-bridged dinuclear dysprosium complex showing single-molecule magnetic behavior: supramolecular approach to isolate magnetic molecules

Using Na-encapsulated benzo[18]crown-6 (Na)(B18C6) as a counter cation, we successfully magnetically isolated a fluoride-bridging Dy dinuclear complex {[(PW₁₁O₃₉)Dy(H₂O)₂]₂F} (Dy₂POM) with lacunary Keggin ligands. (Na)(B18C6) formed two types of tetramers through C-H⋯O, π⋯π and C-H⋯π interactions, and each tetramer aligned in one dimension along the c-axis to form two types of channels. One channel was partially penetrated by a supramolecular cation from the ±a-axis direction, dividing the channel in the form of a "bamboo node". Dy₂POM was spatially divided by this "bamboo node," which magnetically isolated one portion from the other. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility indicated a weak ferromagnetic interaction between the Dy ions bridged by fluoride. Dy₂POM exhibited the magnetic relaxation characteristics of a single-molecule magnet, including the dependence of AC magnetic susceptibility on temperature and frequency. Magnetic relaxation can be described by the combination of thermally active Orbach and temperature-independent quantum tunneling processes. The application of a static magnetic field effectively suppressed the relaxation due to quantum tunneling.

Synthesis, Structure, and Zero-Field SMM Behavior of Homometallic Dy2, Dy4, and Dy6 Complexes

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of three Dy^III complexes of different nuclearity, [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(NO₃)] [NO₃]·2H₂O·CH₃OH (1), [Dy₄(HL)₂(piv)₄(OH)₂] (2), and [Dy₆(H₂L)₃(μ₃-OH)(μ₃-CO₃)₃(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₈] 5Cl·3H₂O (3) [(H₄L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide)], are described. This variety of complexes with the same ligand could be obtained by playing with the metal-to-ligand molar ratio, the type of Dy^III salt, the kind of base, and the presence/absence of coligand. 1 is a dinuclear complex, while 2 is a tetranuclear assembly with a butterfly-shaped topology. 3 is a homometallic hexanuclear complex that exhibits a propeller-shaped topology. Interestingly, in this complex 3, three atmospheric carbon dioxide molecules are trapped in the form of carbonate ions, which assist in holding the hexanuclear complex together. All of the complexes reveal a slow relaxation of magnetization even in zero applied field. Complex 1 is a zero-field SMM with an effective energy barrier (U_eff) of magnetization reversal equal to 87(1) K and a relaxation time of τ₀ = 6.4(3) × 10^-9 s. Under an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T, these parameters change to U_eff = 101(3) K, τ₀ = 2.5(1) × 10^-9 s. Complex 2 shows zero-field SMM behavior with U_eff = 31(2) K, τ₀ = 4.2(1) × 10^-7 s or τ₀₁ = 2(1) × 10^-7 s, U_eff1 = 37(8) K, τ₀₂ = 5(6) × 10^-5 s, and U_eff2 = 8(4) by considering two Orbach relaxation processes, while 3, also a zero-field SMM, shows a double relaxation of magnetization [U_eff1 = 62.4(3) K, τ₀₁ = 4.6(3) × 10^-8 s, and U_eff1 = 2(1) K, τ₀₂ = 4.6(2) × 10^-5 s]. The ab initio calculations indicated that in these complexes, the Kramer's ground doublet is characterized by an axial g-tensor with the prevalence of the m_J = ±15/2 component, as well as that due to the weak magnetic coupling between the metal centers, the magnetic relaxation, which is dominated by the single Dy^III centers rather than by the exchange-coupled states, takes place via Raman/Orbach or TA-QTM. Moreover, theoretical calculations support a toroidal magnetic state for complex 2.

Seven-coordinate LnIII complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour

The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Dinuclear Tb and Dy complexes supported by hybrid Schiff-base/calixarene ligands: synthesis, structures and magnetic properties

The synthesis of the new lanthanide complexes [HNEt3][Dy2(HL1)(L1)] (5), and [Ln2(L2)2] (Ln = TbIII (7), DyIII (8)) supported by the hybrid Schiff-base/calix[4]arene ligands H4L1 (25-[2-((2-methylphenol)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) and H3L2 (25-[2-((2-methylpyridine)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) are reported. Spectroscopic data (for 5) and X-ray crystallographic analysis (for 7·4MeCN, 8·4MeCN) reveal the presence of dimeric structures, featuring doubly-bridged NO4Ln(μ-O)2LnO4N (5) or N2O3Ln(μ-O)2LnO3N2 cores (7, 8) with seven-coordinated Ln3+ ions. The magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of 5, 7 and 8 were studied by variable temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The χ''(T) vs. T plots show no maxima in zero field, but the maxima can be detected under a 3 kOe dc field. The relaxation times τ obey the Arrhenius law above 5 K. Anisotropy barriers of ∼18 cm-1 (26 K) for 5 and ∼23 cm-1 (33 K) for 8 were determined.

Field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation in two one-dimensional homometallic dysprosium(iii) complexes based on alpha- and beta-amino acids

Two one-dimensional dysprosium(iii) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Dy₂(gly)₆(H₂O)₄](ClO₄)₆·5H₂O}_n (1) and {[Dy₂(β-ala)₆(H₂O)₄](ClO₄)₆·H₂O}_n (2), have been synthesised and characterised structurally and magnetically. Both compounds crystallise in the triclinic system with the space group P1[combining macron]. In 1, two Dy^III ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In 2, two Dy^III ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). In the crystal packing of both compounds, cationic {[Dy₂(L)₆(H₂O)₄]⁶⁺}_n [L = α-glycine (1) and β-alanine (2)] chains, ClO₄^- anions, and water molecules generate a network connected through H-bonding interactions. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals different magnetic behaviour 1 and 2. In addition, ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation for both compounds, pointing out that the single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon occurs in both 1 and 2.

Magnetic Behavior of Luminescent Dinuclear Dysprosium and Terbium Complexes Derived from Phenoxyacetic Acid and 2,2’-Bipyridine

Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Dy2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (1) and [Tb2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (2) (HL1 = phenoxyacetic acid and L2 = 2,2’-bipyridine) were synthesized and the crystal structures were determined. In both complexes, the lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated and have a muffin geometry. Detailed magnetic study reveals the presence of field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior for complex 1, whereas complex 2 is non-SMM in nature. Further magnetic study with 1’, yttrium doped magnetically diluted sample of 1, disclosed the presence of Orbach and Raman relaxation processes with effective energy barrier, ∆E = 16.26 cm−1 and relaxation time, τo = 2.42 × 10−8 s. Luminescence spectra for complexes 1 and 2 in acetonitrile were studied which show characteristic emission peaks for DyIII and TbIII ions, respectively.

A family of planar hexanuclear CoLn clusters with lucanidae-like arrangement and single-molecule magnet behavior

A family of planar hexanuclear CoLn clusters with the hydroxyl and nitrogen rich ligand 2-[bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) amino]-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (H₃L), formulated as [Co₄Ln₂(μ₃-O)₂(μ-N₃)₂(OH)₂(H₂O)₂(HL)₄]·(CH₃CO₂)₂·20H₂O [Ln = Dy (1), Gd (2), Tb (3), Eu (4) and Ho (5)], have been synthesized and structurally characterized. They are isomorphous and feature a lucanidae-like arrangement. They are the first examples of 3d-4f clusters with the H₃L ligand. In addition, the magnetic properties of 1-5 have been investigated and the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour is observed for 1.

Luminescent and magnetic bifunctional coordination complex based on a chiral tartaric acid derivative and europium

A new mononuclear europium complex incorporating the (+)-di-p-toluoyl-D-tartaric acid (D-H2DTTA) ligand, namely, catena-poly[tris{μ2-3-carboxy-2,3-bis[(4-methylphenyl)carbonyloxy]propanoato}tris(methanol)europium(III)], [Eu(C20H17O8)3(CH3OH)3] n , (I), has been synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure analysis indicates that complex (I) crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3 and exhibits an infinite one-dimensional chain structure, in which the Eu3+ ion is surrounded by six O atoms from six D-HDTTA− ligands and three O atoms from three coordinated methanol molecules, thus forming a tricapped trigonal prism geometry. The D-H2DTTA ligand is partially deprotonated and adopts a μ1,6-coordination mode via two carboxylate groups to link adjacent Eu3+ ions, affording an infinite one-dimensional propeller-shaped coordination polymer chain along the c axis, with an Eu...Eu distance of 7.622 (1) Å. Moreover, C—H...π interactions lead to the formation of helical chains running along the c axis and the whole structure displays a snowflake pattern in the ab plane. The circular dichroism spectrum confirms the chirality of complex (I). The solid-state photoluminescence properties were also investigated at room temperature and (I) exhibits characteristic red emission bands derived from the Eu3+ ion (CIE 0.63, 0.32), with a reasonably long lifetime of 0.394 ms, indicating effective energy transfer from the ligand to the metal centre. In addition, a magnetic investigation reveals single-ion magnetic behaviour. The spin-orbit coupling parameter (λ) between the ground and excited states is fitted to be 360 (2) cm−1 through Zeeman perturbation. Therefore, complex (I) may be regarded as a chiral optical-magneto bifunctional material.

Mononuclear lanthanide complexes assembled from a tridentate NNO donor ligand: design of a DyIII single-ion magnet

The reaction of a tridentate NNO donor ligand, 4-nitro-2-((2-(pyridine-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol (HL) with lanthanide(iii) nitrates in the presence of triethylamine afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(NO3)(L)2(HOCH3)] (Ln = Gd; (1) Tb; (2), Dy; (3), and Ho (4). The mononuclear complexes were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies which revealed a spherical tricapped trigonal prism geometry with a pseudo D3h symmetry around the LnIII centre. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies have been performed on these complexes. Field-induced single-ion magnet behaviour was observed in the DyIII analogue with an effective energy barrier and an pre-exponential factor of Δ/kB = 68(2) K and τ0 = 1.8 × 10-7 s, respectively.

Three chiral one-dimensional lanthanide–ditoluoyl-tartrate bifunctional polymers exhibiting luminescence and magnetic behaviors

Since Ln-CPs have excellent optical properties (higher color purity, longer fluorescence lifetime and higher quantum yield) and magnetic properties, it is of great significance to prepare dual magneto-optical materials based on Ln(iii). Herein, we obtained three versatile Ln-CPs, [Ln(HDTTA)₃(CH₃OH)₃]_n, derived from reactions of lanthanide salts (Ln = Tb 1, Dy 2, Ho 3) and a chiral and flexible ligand, namely, (+)-di-p-toluoyl-d-tartaric acid (d-H₂DTTA) in a methanol–water solution, at room temperature and pressure. The structures of these compounds have been characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analyses and thermogravimetric analyses. Complexes 1–3 are isomorphic, crystallizing in the chiral trigonal R3 space group with the linkage of Ln³⁺ ions and featuring 1D propeller chain structures. The circular dichroism spectra confirm that the complexes maintain the chirality from the ligands. Furthermore, the luminescent and magnetic properties have been investigated, relying on intrinsic properties of the lanthanide ions. The photoluminescence measurements indicate that 1, 2 and 3 show strong green, white and blue emission bands with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.56), (0.29, 0.26) and (0.21, 0.12), respectively. The decay lifetime curve of 1 shows the exponential decay with long lifetime of 1.169 ms and the relative quantum yield for 1 was 19.31%. In addition, the magnetic properties of complexes 1–3 have been investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility in the temperature range of 2–300 K. They are all dominated by spin–orbit coupling and ligand field perturbation, and the exchange coupling between Ln³⁺ ions is almost negligible. Therefore, complexes 1–3 are promising chiral, optical and magnetic multifunctional materials.
