Preparation of Ca/Al-Layered Double Hydroxides/Biochar Composite with High Adsorption Capacity and Selectivity toward Cationic Dyes in Aqueous

Widely reports have evaluated the use of biochar (BC) composites to layered double hydroxide (LDH) to adsorb dyes from wastewater. However, its applicability for adsorbing a mixture of cationic dyes such as Malachite green (MG), Rodhamine-B (Rh-B), and Methylene blue (MB), which causes carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on aquatic life, has not been studied. In this work, we compared the performance of CaAl-LDH/BC adsorbent with or without the addition of BC in the adsorption of cationic dyes. The adsorption study was prepared in a batch system using various temperatures, concentrations, and also contact time. The results of the characterization of Ca/Al-Biochar composite showed the unique diffraction of XRD pattern, and also showed two characteristics of starting materials. Surface area analysis by BET method showed Ca/Al-Biochar composite has a higher surface area than starting material. The results of the adsorption study of MG showed that Ca/Al-Biochar follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of MG on Ca/Al-Biochar was up to 71.429 mg/g and shows selectivity toward MG in an aqueous solution. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Efficient activation of intercalated persulfate via a composite of reduced graphene oxide and layered double hydroxide

Efficient activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS, S₂O₈^2-) was achieved in this study by a hybrid of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and layered double hydroxide (LDH). The peroxydisulfate was intercalated into the interlayers of LDH that was combined with rGO. This sample contributed to 92.4 % of phenol (PhOH) removal at 25 °C with a PDS loading amount of 0.4 mmol/g, which is better than its LDH-PDS counterpart. A high activation of PDS in rGO/LDH-PDS was also observed during the oxidation of 4-bromophenol (4-BrPhOH), 2,4-dibromophenol (2, 4-BrPhOH), 2,6-dibromophenol (2, 6-BrPhOH) and bisphenol A (BPA). As a redox reaction of PDS in LDH, this result determined that the composite of rGO/LDH caused more PDS to be activated than LDH. As the defective rGO sites activated the PDS on the surface or edges of LDH layers, the breaking of the OO bond in PDS generated SO₄^·- radicals from intercalated peroxydisulfate. This result was supported by the radical scavenger experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, and the increased number of oxygen functional groups in the reacted rGO. Our work thus provided a novel strategy for PDS activation to use in environmental remediation.

Recent Progress in Two-Dimensional Layered Double Hydroxides and Their Derivatives for Supercapacitors

High-performance supercapacitors have attracted great attention due to their high power, fast charging/discharging, long lifetime, and high safety. However, the generally low energy density and overall device performance of supercapacitors limit their applications. In recent years, the design of rational electrode materials has proven to be an effective pathway to improve the capacitive performances of supercapacitors. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have shown great potential in new-generation supercapacitors, due to their unique two-dimensional layered structures with a high surface area and tunable composition of the host layers and intercalation species. Herein, recent progress in LDH-based, LDH-derived, and composite-type electrode materials targeted for applications in supercapacitors, by tuning the chemical/metal composition, growth morphology, architectures, and device integration, is reviewed. The complicated relationships between the composition, morphology, structure, and capacitive performance are presented. A brief projection is given for the challenges and perspectives of LDHs for energy research.
