Evaluating the Catalytic Activities of PNCNP Pincer Group 10 Metal Hydride Complexes: Pd-Catalyzed Reduction of CO2 to the Formic Acid Level with NH3·BH3 and NaBH4 under Ambient Conditions

In order to develop efficient protocols for CO₂ reduction with less expensive and more convenient hydrogen sources, the catalytic reactivities of group 10 metal hydride complexes supported by a PNCNP pincer ligand, [2,6-(^tBu₂PNH)₂C₆H₃]MH (M = Ni, 1a; Pd, 1b; Pt, 1c), against the hydroboration of CO₂ with NH₃·BH₃ and NaBH₄ have been explored. Both 1a and 1b readily react with CO₂ at room temperature to form the corresponding formato complexes, [2,6-(^tBu₂PNH)₂C₆H₃]MOC(O)H (M = Ni, 2a; Pd, 2b), in nearly quantitative yields. Treatment of NH₃·BH₃ with CO₂ (1 atm) in 1,4-dioxane or THF at room temperature in the presence of 0.05-1.0 mol % of 1b followed by hydrolysis of the resulting mixtures produces formic acid in 105-186% yields, and initial turnover frequencies of up to 2000 h^-1 are observed. In the presence of 1.0 mol % of 1b, NaBH₄ reacts with CO₂ (1 atm) in THF at room temperature to form NaB[OC(O)H]₄ (3) in 87% isolated yield. In situ NMR spectroscopy indicates that the reactions proceed through the insertion of the C═O bond in CO₂ into the Pd-H bond in 1b to form 2b, which sequentially reacts with the hydrides in NH₃·BH₃ or NaBH₄ to produce boron formato species and regenerate 1b. This work represents one of the rare examples of catalytic transfer hydrogenation of CO₂ with NH₃·BH₃ to the formic acid level under very mild conditions without any additives and also the first example of 4 equiv of CO₂ uptake by NaBH₄ in a reaction.

Bimetallic complexes that merge metallocene and pincer-metal building blocks: synthesis, stereochemistry and catalytic reactivity

This perspective is to illustrate the synthesis and applications of bimetallic complexes by merging a metallocene and a (cyclopentadienyl/aryl) pincer metal complex. Four possible ways to merge metallocene and pincer-metal motifs are reported and representative examples are discussed in more detail. These bimetallic complexes have been employed in some important catalytic reactions such as cross-coupling, transfer hydrogenation or synthesis of ammonia. The metallocene fragment may tune the electronic properties of the pincer ligand, due to its redox reversible properties. Also, the presence of two metals in a single complex allows their electronic communication, which proved beneficial for, e.g., the catalytic activity of some species. The presence of the metallocene fragment provides an excellent opportunity to develop chiral catalysts, because the metallocene merger generally renders the two faces of the pincer-metal catalytic site diastereotopic. Besides, an extra chiral functionality may be added to the bimetallic species by using pincer motifs that are planar chiral, e.g. by using the different substituents of pincer ligand "arms" or non-symmetrical arene groupings. Post-functionalization of pre-formed pincer-metal complexes, via η⁶-coordination with an areneophile such as [CpRu]⁺ and [Cp*Ru]⁺ presents a striking strategy to obtain diastereomeric metallocene-pincer type derivatives, that actually involve half-sandwich metallocenes. This approach offers the possibility to create diastereomerically pure derivatives by using the chiral TRISPHAT anion. The authors hope that this report of the synthetic, physico-chemical properties and remarkable catalytic activities of metallocene-based pincer-metal complexes will inspire other researchers to continue exploring this realm.

Designed pincer ligand supported Co(II)-based catalysts for dehydrogenative activation of alcohols: Studies on N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines

Base-metal catalysts Co1, Co2 and Co3 were synthesized from designed pincer ligands L1, L2 and L3 having NNN donor atoms respectively. Co1, Co2 and Co3 were characterized by IR, UV-Vis. and ESI-MS spectroscopic studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were investigated to authenticate the molecular structures of Co1 and Co3. Catalysts Co1, Co2 and Co3 were utilized to study the dehydrogenative activation of alcohols for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines. Under optimized reaction conditions, a broad range of substrates including alcohols, anilines and ketones were exploited. A series of control experiments for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines were examined to understand the reaction pathway. ESI-MS spectral studies were investigated to characterize cobalt-alkoxide and cobalt-hydride intermediates. Reduction of styrene by evolved hydrogen gas during the reaction was investigated to authenticate the dehydrogenative nature of the catalysts. Probable reaction pathways were proposed for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines on the basis of control experiments and detection of reaction intermediates.

Synthesis and Catalytic Reactivity of Cobalt Pincer Nitrosyl Hydride Complexes

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activity of low-spin {CoNO}⁸ pincer complexes of the type [Co(PCP)(NO)(H)] are described. These compounds are obtained either by reacting [Co(PCP)(κ²-BH₄)] with NO and Et₃N or, alternatively, by reacting [Co(PCP)(NO)]⁺ with boranes, such as NH₃·BH₃ in solution. The five-coordinate, diamagnetic Co(III) complex [Co(PCP^NMe-iPr)(NO)(H)] was found to be the active species in the hydroboration of alkenes with anti-Markovnikov selectivity. A range of aromatic and aliphatic alkenes were efficiently converted with pinacolborane (HBpin) under mild conditions in good to excellent yield. Mechanistic insight into the catalytic reaction is provided by means of isotope labeling, NMR spectroscopy, and APCI/ESI-MS as well as DFT calculations.
