Abstract
Natural rubber originates from the coagulation of rubber particles (RP) from Hevea brasiliensis latex. The size distribution of Hevea RP is bimodal with the presence of small rubber particles (SRP) and large rubber particles (LRP). This study aims at getting a better understanding of the early coagulation steps of Hevea RP taking into account the particle size. SRP and LRP were obtained by centrifugation of freshly tapped ammonia-free latex from RRIM600 clone. Size and zeta potential measurements showed that both RP fractions were efficiently separated and stable in basic buffer. SRP and LRP dispersions were placed in a Langmuir trough and RP were let to adsorb at the air-liquid interface to form interfacial films. Surface tension and ellipsometry indicate that the formation kinetics and the stabilization of the film at the air-liquid interface are faster for SRP than LRP. Moreover, the arrangement of RP at the interface differs between SRP and LRP, as shown by Brewster angle microscopy, atomic force microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. First, the RP membrane and cis-1,4-polyisoprene core spread at the air-liquid interface before clustering. Then, while the SRP fuse, the LRP keep their structure in individual particles in floating aggregate. The role of the non-isoprene molecules on the different organization of SRP and LRP films is discussed, the one of the two major RP proteins, SRPP1 (Small Rubber Particle Protein) and Rubber Elongation Factor (REF1) in the early coagulation steps.

Abstract
According to the fatty acid and headgroup compositions of the phospholipids (PL) from Hevea brasiliensis latex, three synthetic PL were selected (i.e. POPA: 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate POPC: 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and POPG: 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol) to investigate the effect of PL headgroup on the interactions with two major proteins of Hevea latex, i.e. Rubber Elongation Factor (REF1) and Small Rubber Particle Protein (SRPP1). Protein/lipid interactions were screened using two models (lipid vesicles in solution or lipid monolayers at air/liquid interface). Calcein leakage, surface pressure, ellipsometry, microscopy and spectroscopy revealed that both REF1 and SRPP1 displayed stronger interactions with anionic POPA and POPG, as compared to zwitterionic POPC. A particular behavior of REF1 was observed when interacting with POPA monolayers (i.e. aggregation + modification of secondary structure from α-helices to β-sheets, characteristic of its amyloid aggregated form), which might be involved in the irreversible coagulation mechanism of Hevea rubber particles.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle is essential for locomotion and plays a crucial role in energy homeostasis. It is regulated by nutrition, genetic factors, physical activity and hormones. Furan fatty acids (FuFAs) are minor fatty acids present in small quantities in food from plants and animals origin. Recently, we showed that a preventive nutritional supplementation with furan fatty acid in a DIO mouse model reduces metabolic disorders. The present study was designed to determine the influence of FuFA-F2 extracted from Hevea brasiliensis latex on skeletal muscle phenotype. In C2C12 myotubes we found that FuFA-F2 whatever the concentration used increased protein content. We revealed that in C2C12 myotubes FuFA-F2 (10 µM) increases protein synthesis as shown by the stimulation of mTOR phosphorylation. Next, to confirm in vivo our results C57Bl6 mice were supplemented by oral gavage with vehicle or FuFA-F2 (20 mg/kg) for 3 and a half weeks. We found that mice supplemented with FuFA-F2 had a greater lean mass than the control mice. In line with this observation, we revealed that FuFA-F2 increased muscle mass and promoted more oxidative muscle metabolism in mice as attested by cytochrome c oxidase activity. In conclusion, we demonstrated that FuFA-F2 stimulates muscle anabolism in mice in vitro and in vivo, mimicking in part physical activity. This study highlights that in vivo FuFA-F2 may have health benefits by increasing muscle mass and oxidative metabolism.

Abstract
The increase in obesity has become a major global health problem and is associated with numerous metabolic dysfunctions. Furan fatty acids (FuFAs) are minor lipids present in our diet. Recently we showed that FuFA-F2 extracted from Hevea brasiliensis latex stimulates muscle anabolism in mice in vitro and in vivo, mimicking in part physical activity. While skeletal muscle is essential for energy metabolism and is the predominant site of insulin-mediated glucose uptake in the post prandial state, our results suggested that FuFA-F2 could have favorable effects against obesity. The aim of this work was therefore to study whether a preventive nutritional supplementation with FuFA-F2 (40 mg or 110 mg/day/kg of body weight) in a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model may have beneficial effects against obesity and liver and skeletal muscle metabolic dysfunction. We showed that 12 weeks of FuFA-F2 supplementation in DIO mice decreased fat mass, increased lean mass and restored normal energy expenditure. In addition, we found that FuFA-F2 improved insulin sensitivity. We revealed that FuFA-F2 increased muscle mass but had no effect on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in skeletal muscle. Furthermore, we observed that FuFA-F2 supplementation reduced liver steatosis without impact on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in liver. Our findings demonstrated for the first time that a preventive nutritional supplementation with a furan fatty acid in DIO mice reduced metabolic disorders and was able to mimic partly the positive effects of physical activity. This study highlights that nutritional FuFA-F2 supplementation could be an effective approach to treat obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
IAN873, Dongfang93114 and Reyan73397, created through vegetative propagation for their high yield and excellent cold resistance, are major clones planted in China. In this work, latexes with rubber particles of the same size from these clones are separated from fresh natural rubber latex, and corresponding rubber films are prepared from each latex. The structure and components of each film are measured. This indicates that the characteristics of the rubbers obtained from latexes with similar particle sizes show some resembling trends among different clones, while for specific samples, those characteristics vary depending on the clone. The molecular weight is generally highest in IAN873 and lowest in Reyan73397. Rubber chains in small rubber particles are longer, and large rubber particles show a wider molecular weight distribution. The gel content of every sample from Reyan73397 is lower than the other two clones. The nitrogen content increases with the size of rubber particles in all clones. The ester content of small rubber particles in IAN873 and Reyan73397 is almost zero. Large rubber particles have more branching points formed via esters. This study provides a new perspective on the influence of clones on the relationship between characteristics of natural rubber and the size of rubber particles in natural rubber latex.

Abstract
Natural rubber is usually synthesized in the rubber particles present in the latex of rubber-producing plants such as the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and rubber dandelion (Taraxacum kok-saghyz). Since the detailed lipid compositions of fresh latex and rubber particles of the plants are poorly known, the present study reports detailed compound lipid composition, focusing on phospholipids and galactolipids in the latex and rubber particles of the plants. In the fresh latex and rubber particles of both plants, phospholipids were much more dominant (85-99%) compared to galactolipids. Among the nine classes of phospholipids, phosphatidylcholines (PCs) were most abundant, at ~80%, in both plants. Among PCs, PC (36:4) and PC (34:2) were most abundant in the rubber tree and rubber dandelion, respectively. Two classes of galactolipids, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol and digalactosyl diacylglycerol, were detected as 12% and 1%, respectively, of total compound lipids in rubber tree, whereas their percentages in the rubber dandelion were negligible (< 1%). Overall, the compound lipid composition differed only slightly between the fresh latex and the rubber particles of both rubber plants. These results provide fundamental data on the lipid composition of rubber particles in two rubber-producing plants, which can serve as a basis for artificial rubber particle production in the future.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This work was done in three stages. In step 1, the lipid content of different natural rubbers (NRs) was evaluated by two methods, extraction and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and the obtained results were successfully correlated. In the second step, the correlations between scorch time (Ts2) and optimum cure time (T′c90) of rubber compounds based on natural rubber (NR) and the lipid contents of different types of NR (obtained by two methods) were investigated. The suitable linear behaviors were observed. In the third step, because ATR-FTIR spectroscopy is a fast, simple, and nondestructive technique for characterizing NR, the correlations that were obtained by this method were considered to predict the rheological properties of two case studies. The amounts of Ts2 and T′c90 were estimated by errors of about 20% and 15%, respectively. This new approach is a nondestructive and rapid method for predicting the cure characteristics of the defined NR-based rubber compounds by analyzing small amounts of the species.

Abstract
The stabilization mechanism of natural rubber (NR) latex from Hevea brasiliensis was studied to investigate the components involved in base-catalyzed ester hydrolysis, namely, hydrolyzable lipids, ammonia, and the products responsible for the desired phenomenon observed in ammonia-preserved NR latex. Latex stability is generally thought to come from a rubber particle (RP) dispersion in the serum, which is encouraged by negatively charged species distributed on the RP surface. The mechanical stability time (MST) and zeta potential were measured to monitor field latices preserved in high (FNR-HA) and low ammonia (FNR-LA) contents as well as that with the ester-containing components removed (saponified NR) at different storage times. Amounts of carboxylates of free fatty acids (FFAs), which were released by the transformation and also hypothesized to be responsible for the like-charge repulsion of RPs, were measured as the higher fatty acid (HFA) number and corroborated by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) both qualitatively and quantitatively. The lipids and their FFA products interact differently with Nile red, which is a lipid-selective and polarity-sensitive fluorophore, and consequently re-emit characteristically. The results were confirmed by conventional ester content determination utilizing different solvent extraction systems to reveal that the lipids hydrolyzed to provide negatively charged fatty acid species were mainly the polar lipids (glycolipids and phospholipids) at the RP membrane but not those directly linked to the rubber molecule and, to a certain extent, those suspended in the serum. From new findings disclosed herein together with those already reported, a new model for the Hevea rubber particle in the latex form is proposed.

Abstract
Environmental stress can lead to oxidative stress resulting from an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and involves redox adjustments. Natural rubber is synthesized in laticifers, which is a non-photosynthetic tissue particularly prone to oxidative stress. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on the ROS production and ROS-scavenging systems in laticifers. These regulations have been the subject of intense research into a physiological syndrome, called Tapping Panel Dryness (TPD), affecting latex production in Hevea brasiliensis. In order to prevent TPD occurrence, monitoring thiol content appeared to be a crucial factor of latex diagnosis. Thiols, ascorbate and γ-tocotrienol are the major antioxidants in latex. They are involved in membrane protection from ROS and likely have an effect on the quality of raw rubber. Some transcription factors might play a role in the redox regulatory network in Hevea, in particular ethylene response factors, which have been the most intensively studied given the role of ethylene on rubber production. Current challenges for rubber research and development with regard to redox systems will involve improving antioxidant capacity using natural genetic variability.

Abstract
Latex, the cytoplasm of laticiferous cells localized in the inner bark of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg.), is collected by tapping the bark. Following tapping, latex flows out of the trunk and is regenerated, whereas in untapped trees, there is no natural exudation. It is still unknown whether the carbohydrates used for latex regeneration in tapped trees is coming from recent photosynthates or from stored carbohydrates, and in the former case, it is expected that latex carbon isotope composition of tapped trees will vary seasonally, whereas latex isotope composition of untapped trees will be more stable. Temporal variations of carbon isotope composition of trunk latex (δ(13)C-L), leaf soluble compounds (δ(13)C-S) and bulk leaf material (δ(13)C-B) collected from tapped and untapped 20-year-old trees were compared. A marked difference in δ(13)C-L was observed between tapped and untapped trees whatever the season. Trunk latex from tapped trees was more depleted (1.6‰ on average) with more variable δ(13)C values than those of untapped trees. δ(13)C-L was higher and more stable across seasons than δ(13)C-S and δ(13)C-B, with a maximum seasonal difference of 0.7‰ for tapped trees and 0.3‰ for untapped trees. δ(13)C-B was lower in tapped than in untapped trees, increasing from August (middle of the rainy season) to April (end of the dry season). Differences in δ(13)C-L and δ(13)C-B between tapped and untapped trees indicated that tapping affects the metabolism of both laticiferous cells and leaves. The lack of correlation between δ(13)C-L and δ(13)C-S suggests that recent photosynthates are mixed in the large pool of stored carbohydrates that are involved in latex regeneration after tapping.
