Abstract
Conjugated 1-bromo or 1-iodo-1,3-dienes bearing a sulfide substituent have been synthesized via 1,2-sulfur migration from propargylic thioethers upon activation with NIS or NBS. The reaction generally proceeds with high control over the regio- and diastereoselectivity. Highly substituted thiophenes and selenophenes are easily obtained from the generated dienes.

Abstract
1,3-Dienes are vital building blocks in organic synthesis. They underpin many fundamental synthetic transformations and are present in numerous natural products and drug candidate molecules. The rearrangement of an alkylallene to a 1,3-diene is an atom efficient, redox neutral, transformation that provides a straightforward synthetic route to functionalized 1,3-dienes. Herein, we provide an account of this transformation using allenes that are not predisposed by the presence of heteroatoms or electron-withdrawing groups directly attached to the allene. Early reports of this skeletal rearrangement are acid-mediated approaches, with limited substrate scope, but they provide valuable mechanistic insights. More recent transition metal-mediated approaches that exhibit improved substrate scope are described, together with isolated examples that have utilized this rearrangement.

Abstract
An oxidative cross-coupling reaction between activated olefins and vinyl boronate derivatives has been developed for the highly stereoselective construction of synthetically useful (E,E)-1,3-dienes. The highlight of this reaction is that exclusive stereoselectivity (only E,E-isomer) was achieved from a base-free, ligand-free, and mild catalytic condition with a less expensive [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 catalyst.

Abstract
The heteroatom-directed lateral lithiation of functionalized toluenes in a choline chloride-based eutectic mixture is reported. The metalations proceed within ultrafast reaction times, with a broad substrate and electrophile scope. The directing groups provide a rapid and high regioselective access to functionalized aromatic derivatives of remarkable synthetic value.

Abstract
A divergent synthesis of thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-alkynes, 1,3-dienes and allenes via regioselective nucleophilic addition of sulfur nucleophiles to 2-trifluoromethyl-1,3-conjugated enynes was developed. The addition patterns depend on the type of enyne, sulfur nucleophile and reaction conditions used. 1,4-Addition leading to thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-allenes was realized when enynes possessing electron-withdrawing aryl groups on the alkyne moiety were used as reaction partners and alkanethiols were used as nucleophiles, whereas solvent-controlled construction of thioether-functionalized 1,3-dienes and alkynes was realized, respectively, via a 3,4-addition pattern or 1,2-addition pattern if thiophenols were applied as nucleophiles. The three types of compounds containing both sulfur and fluorine elements are valuable building blocks for synthesis of multifunctional fluorinated vinyl sulfides and thiophene derivatives. Abstract
A new, facile, and efficient protocol for the synthesis of polysubstituted conjugated 1,3-dienes through Ni-catalyzed tandem dimerization/cross-coupling reaction of diarylacetylenes and arylboronic acids in the presence of a catalytic amount of B2pin2 has been developed. A series of arynes and arylboronic acids with different substituents participated well in this catalytic system, affording a variety of useful conjugated 1,3-dienes.

Abstract
We report a facile method for the synthesis of 1,3-dienes by a sequential process consisting of a palladium-catalyzed, base-free, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling/isomerization sequence. This sequence couples boronic acids with propargyl alcohols, generating the requisite allene in situ, followed by conversion of the unactivated allene to its 1,3-diene via a hydro-palladation/dehydro-palladation process. This process is general for a range of boronic acids, including boronic acids with electron-donating and -withdrawing groups, as well as heteroarylboronic acids. Key to this process is the boric acid byproduct of the base-free Suzuki-Miyauru coupling, which generates the required palladium-hydrido complex [H-Pd(II)-OB(OH)2] required for the isomerization.

Abstract
A metal-free decarboxylative amination of 4-(ethoxycarbonyl)-2,3-allenols by TsNCO via base-induced aza-Michael addition/elimination has been developed. A variety of substituted N-tosyl 1,3-dien-2-yl amines were obtained in good yields and excellent regio- and stereoselectivity. Moreover, this transformation could be applied in preparation of 2-amino-trienes.

Abstract
During this decade, the enantio- and stereoselective synthesis of natural products has been actively explored in the author's laboratory. In this account, the author outlines practical syntheses of the polycyclic substructures of two novel structurally formidable antibiotics, namely, the trans-fused octahydronaphthalene moiety of versipelostatins and the A/B/C-tricyclic decahydrofluorene moiety of GKK1032s. Both syntheses have been achieved with remarkable regio- and stereoselectivity via intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions using well-designed enantiomeric substrates.

Abstract
Synthesis of substituted 1,3-dienes was achieved via gold(I)-catalyzed Claisen rearrangement of allenyl vinyl ethers. The N-heterocyclic carbene gold chloride catalyst (IPrAuCl) was superior in terms of activity and selectivity and afforded the 3,3-product in excellent yields. A proposed cation-π inter-action played a significant role in affecting the reaction rate.

Abstract
A phosphine-mediated olefination of 2-alkynoates with aldehydes forming 1,3-dienes with high E-selectivity and up to 88% yield is described. Reaction conditions are optimized and reactions are demonstrated for various aryl, alkyl, and alkenyl aldehydes and for ethyl 2-alkynoates with different substituents in the δ-position. Proof of concept is shown for the generation of a β,γ-unsaturated lactone by intramolecular olefination, and furthermore the use of the generated 1,3-dienes in the Diels-Alder reaction has been demonstrated.

Abstract
A clean and salt-free Wittig olefination between phosphines, aldehydes, and allylic carbonates is described. It represents a general method for convenient and efficient synthesis of 1,2,4-trisubstituted 1,3-dienes from readily available starting materials. This method exhibits high synthetic efficiency, high stereoselectivity, and high variability of substituent.

Abstract
(E)-α-Stannyl-α,β-unsaturated esters underwent an iododestannylation reaction to afford (E)-α-iodo-α,β-unsaturated esters, which reacted with (E)-alkenylzirconium(IV) complexes produced in situ by hydrozirconation of terminal alkynes in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 to afford stereoselectively a variety of 1,3-dien-2-yl esters in good yields.

Abstract
The phosphine-mediated olefination of aldehydes with electron-deficient allenes to afford trisubstituted conjugated dienes in fair to excellent yields with high E-selectivity is described. The reaction represents a new reactivity pattern of allenes with aldehydes and also provides a highly stereoselective synthetic method for preparing conjugated dienes. In the reaction, the phosphine acts as a nucleophilic promoter to generate in situ an active phosphorus ylide which mediates the intermolecular olefination.

Abstract
A stereoselective approach to the synthesis of (E)-alkoxydienylamines (2) is described, starting from alpha,beta-unsaturated acetals (1) and aryl imines, under superbasic conditions. These can be readily converted into alpha-arylglycine derivatives (3) by mild acidic hydrolysis or, in turn, cyclized under oxidative conditions in the presence of a Pd catalyst to 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted pyrroles (4).
