Abstract
Recent advances in the environmentally benign synthesis of aromatic N-heterocycles are reviewed, focusing primarily on the application of catalytic methods and non-traditional activation. This account features two main parts: the preparation of single ring N-heterocycles, and their condensed analogs. Both groups include compounds with one, two and more N-atoms. Due to the large number of protocols, this account focuses on providing representative examples to feature the available methods.

Abstract
A new approach for the annulation of a thiopyrane ring to an indole core under mild conditions was developed. Treating 2-methyl-3-acylindoles with lithium diisopropyl amide leads to the elimination of a proton from the 2-methyl group. The lithium indole-2,3-dienolates obtained were found to react with CS2 to give the corresponding thiopyrano[4,3-b]indole-3(5H)-thiones. The mechanism represents a stepwise addition through ion-pair formation, according to PCM/B3LYP/6-311++G**, PBE1PBE/6-311++G**, and MP2//HF/6-311++G** quantum chemical calculations. AIM calculations revealed the essential role of the Li atom at all stages of the process.

Abstract
A single-electron transfer mediated modular indole formation reaction from a 2-iodoaniline derivative and a ketone has been developed. This transition-metal-free reaction shows a broad substrate scope and unconventional regioselectivity trends. Moreover, important functional groups for further transformation are tolerated under the reaction conditions. Density functional theory studies reveal that the reaction proceeds by metal coordination, which converts a disfavored 5-endo-trig cyclization to an accessible 7-endo-trig process.

Abstract
Indole moiety is often found in different classes of pharmaceutically active molecules
having various biological activities including anticancer, anti-viral, anti-psychotic, antihypertensive,
anti-migraine, anti-arthritis and analgesic activities. Due to enormous applications
of indole derivatives in pharmaceutical chemistry, a number of conventional synthetic
methods as well as green methodology have been developed for their synthesis. Green methodology
has many advantages including high yields, short reaction time, and inexpensive
reagents, highly efficient and environmentally benign over conventional methods. Currently,
the researchers in academia as well as in pharmaceutical industries have been developing
various methods for the chemical synthesis of indole based compounds via green approaches
to overcome the drawbacks of conventional methods. This review reflects the last ten years
developments of the various greener methods for the synthesis of indole derivatives by using microwave, ionic liquids,
water, ultrasound, nanocatalyst, green catalyst, multicomponent reaction and solvent-free reactions etc. (please

Abstract
Unique tunable aryl-imidazolium magnetic ionic liquids with dual functions as a solvent–catalyst and dual Brønsted–Lewis acidity (B-L MILs) are applied for Friedel–Crafts alkylation without additional solvents. The catalytic properties of these B-L MILs in the Friedel–Crafts alkylation of p-xylene with benzyl chloride are investigated. The various reaction parameters, including the catalyst dosage, reaction time, reaction temperature, molar ratio of reactants, and reusability, are discussed. The results show that the B-L MIL 5c has more excellent product selectivity (>99%) and reactant conversion (>99%) under the following optimum conditions (reaction temperature = 80 °C, reaction time = 0.5 h, molar ratio of p-xylene to benzyl chloride = 6:1, and catalyst 5c dosage = 1.0 mole %) than traditional catalysts reported in the previous literature. Specifically, due to the mesomeric effect between the FeCl4 anion and hydrogen atom at cationic moiety, the catalyst B-L MILs with the molar fraction of FeCl3 equal to 0.5 can be easily recovered and provide satisfactory catalytic activity after being re-used six times.

Abstract
1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)-based ionic liquids (ILs) 2-4 were synthesized by the N-alkylation of DABCO using alkyl halides of varying chain lengths (C2, C5, and C7). The N-alkylated DABCO-ILs were mixed with polyethylene glycols (PEGs) of varying molar masses as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) to prepare new deep eutectic solvents (DESs). These DABCO-PEG-based DESs were successfully employed for the synthesis of a variety of indoles 7a-7h (by Fischer indole synthesis) and 1H-tetrazoles 9a-9i (by click chemistry). For comparison, DESs of DABCO-ILs with different alcohols (as HBD) were also prepared and investigated for the synthesis of indoles. Although comparable yields were observed in DES-containing alcohols and PEGs, the use of PEG as HBD in DES (as an alternative to alcohols) provides a much safer, nonvolatile, and environmentally benign reaction medium for synthetic reactions. The first successful application of PEG-polymer-based DES as benign reaction media for organic syntheses offers exciting opportunities to be explored in the realm of green synthesis.

Abstract
Background A new and efficient method have been developed for the synthesis of different indole derivatives from various ketones, having at least one hydrogen atom attached to each of their α-carbon atoms, and hydrazines in solvent-free conditions, using marine sponge/H3PO4 as a naturally occurring chiral catalyst. Objectives This study recommended the use of marine sponge/H3PO4 as a naturally occurring chiral catalyst for preparation of phenylhydrazones from ketones having one α-hydrogen and subsequent cyclisation of the products to indoles. Materials and Methods The reaction was carried out by mixing the phenylhydrazine, ketone, and marine sponge/H3PO4 powder in mortar and pestle; the mixture was ground at room temperature in an appropriate time until TLC show the completion of the reaction. The product extracted by CH2Cl2 and evaporation of solvent yields the products. Results In this research work, several indoles are synthesized using phenylhydrazine and aliphatic or aromatic ketone as starting materials, in the presence of marine sponge/H3PO4 powder as a natural catalyst under solvent-free condition. Conclusions We found marine sponge/H3PO4 to be an effective catalyst for indolisation of phenylhydrazones from ketones having α-hydrogens in solvent-free conditions.

Abstract
Methyl indolenines (4a-c) and (5a-c) were prepared in high yield by a Fischer indole synthesis reaction of o,m-tolylhydrazine hydrochlorides (1a-b) with isopropyl methyl ketone (2) and 2-methylcyclohexanone (3) in acetic acid at room temperature. o,p- Nitrophenylhydrazines (1c-d) were reacted with 2-methylcyclohexanone (3) in acetic acid at reflux to give nitroindolenines (5d-e), while the attempted reactions of o,p-nitrohydrazines with isopropyl methyl ketone (2) in acetic acid were not successful. Compounds (1c-d) were reacted with isopropyl methyl ketone (2) in acetic acid/HCl to give 2,3,3-trimethyl-5-nitro-indolenine (4e) and 2,3,3-trimethyl-7-nitroindolenine (4d).

Abstract
In this paper, we presented a novel method for the facile and efficient one-pot synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles, which were directly synthesized from 2-aminophenol and aldehydes catalyzed by hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (HAuCl(4).4H(2)O) under an oxygen atmosphere with anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent or in solvent-free condition. The results show that this method could bring excellent yields as high as 96%. THF was proven to be the best choice among several solvents screened and the reaction was tolerated with a variety of aromatic aldehydes possessing electron-donating or withdrawing groups. The advantages of the present method lie in catalytic process using economic and environmentally benign dioxygen as oxidant.
