The formation of calixarene-based liposomes was investigated, and the characterization of these nanostructures was carried out using several techniques. Four amphiphilic calixarenes were used. The length of the hydrophobic chains attached to the lower rim as well as the nature of the polar group present in the upper rim of the calixarenes were varied. The lipid bilayer was formed with one calixarene and with the phospholipid 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine, DOPE. The cytotoxicity of the liposomes for various cell lines was also studied. From the results obtained, the liposomes formed with the least cytotoxic calixarene, (TEAC₁₂)₄, were used as nanocarriers of both nucleic acids and the antineoplastic drug doxorubicin, DOX. Results showed that (TEAC₁₂)₄/DOPE/p-EGFP-C1 lipoplexes, of a given composition, can transfect the genetic material, although the transfection efficiency substantially increases in the presence of an additional amount of DOPE as coadjuvant. On the other hand, the (TEAC₁₂)₄/DOPE liposomes present a high doxorubicin encapsulation efficiency, and a slow controlled release, which could diminish the side effects of the drug.

Fluorophore-Appendant 5,5'-Bicalixarene Scaffolds for Host-Guest Sensing of Nitric Oxide

Conjugated 5,5′-Bicalixarene scaffolds having fluorophores at the chain termini have been prepared and tested in the supramolecular detection of nitric oxide. Scaffolds bearing electron-rich fluorophores demonstrated a stronger turn-off response to the presence of NO than the fluorophore-free analogue in both organic and aqueous media, while no fluorescence quenching happened when the electron-deficient fluorophores were employed. Unprecedented ratiometric supramolecular sensing was observed when fluorophores of the opposite electronic demands were placed at the scaffold’s termini.

Metal-Ligand Coordination Induced Ionochromism for π-Conjugated Materials

Recent studies indicated that the toxicity of heavy metal ions caused a series of environmental, food, and human health problems. Chemical ionochromic sensors are crucial for detecting these toxicity ions. Incorporating organic ligands into π-conjugated polymers made them receptors for metal ions, resulting in an ionochromism phenomenon, which is promising to develop chemosensors for metal ions. This review highlights the recent advances in π-conjugated polymers with ionochromism to metal ions, which may guide rational structural design and evaluation of chemosensors.

Supramolecular fluorescence sensor for liquefied petroleum gas

Sensing systems of nonpolar gas molecules without functional groups such as natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) remain difficult to develop because of lacking selective detection of such molecules over other gas molecules. Here we report a supramolecular fluorescence sensor for LPG using a 2-nm-sized cube-shaped molecular container i.e. a nanocube self-assembled from six molecules of gear-shaped amphiphiles (GSA) in water. The nanocube selectively encapsulates LPG, while it does not bind other gas molecules. Upon encapsulation of LPG in the nanocube, the fluorescence from the nanocube is enhanced by 3.9 times, which is caused by the restricted motion of the aromatic rings of GSA in the nanocube based on aggregation-induced emission. Besides the high selectivity, high sensitivity, quick response, high stability of the nanocube for LPG, and easy preparation of GSA satisfy the requirement for its practical use for an LPG sensor.

Tuning the Binding Dynamics of a Guest-Octaacid Capsule through Noncovalent Anchoring

Hydrophobic or hydrophilic substituents have different effects on the binding dynamics of pyrene derivatives with a 2:1 capsule formed from two octaacid cavitands, showing a subtle interplay of different kinetic factors. Anchoring of the methyl group of 1-methylpyrene within one cavitand slowed the association and dissociation dynamics of the 1:1 complex by at least 1000 times when compared to the 1:1 complex for pyrene. This slow down for the transient formation of the 1:1 complex is responsible for the overall increase in stability of the 2:1 complex without affecting the overall capsule dissociation. For 1-pyrenemethanol, its residence time in the 2:1 capsule is shorter compared to that of pyrene despite both guests having similar equilibrium constants for the binding of the second cavitand, suggesting that the hydroxymethyl substituent close to the equatorial region of the capsule can interact with water during the partial opening of the capsule.

Selective encapsulation of volatile and reactive methyl iodide

A simple organic molecular container can selectively encapsulate the volatile and highly reactive MeI through hydrogen-bonding interactions in solution. The remarkable encapsulation of MeI without self-methylation of the container appears to be determined by the complementary binding sites and the rigidity of the hydrogen-bonding array constrained by the molecular framework.

Shorter synthesis of trifunctionalized cryptophane-A derivatives

Efficient syntheses of trisubstituted cryptophane-A derivatives that are versatile host molecules for many applications are reported. Trihydroxy cryptophane was synthesized in six or seven steps with yields as high as 9.5%. By a different route, trihydroxy cryptophane modified with three propargyl, allyl, or benzyl protecting groups was synthesized with yields of 4.1-5.8% in just six steps. Hyperpolarized (129)Xe NMR chemical shifts of 57-65 ppm were measured for these trisubstituted cryptophanes.

Single-crystal to Single-crystal Transformations - Guest Removal and Substitution in a Robust Solvent-templated Metallocyclic Compound

The formation, structure, and single-crystal to single-crystal transformations of the dinuclear metallocycle [Ag2L2](PF6)2·2CH3CN (L = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-bis(2-methylimidazole-1-yl-methyl)benzene) are described. The acetonitrile guest molecules can be removed without loss of single crystallinity to afford a porous material. CO2 sorption isotherms were recorded at various temperatures and the structures and sorption behaviour of the crystals are compared with those of a previously reported analogous system. Upon exposure to acetone vapour, the desolvated crystals undergo a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation to form the acetone solvate.

Gases as guests in benzocyclotrimer cage hosts

An imine-linked (+)-syn-benzotricamphor derivative gives access to chiral unimolecular cages exhibiting internal cavities of new shapes and volumes. One of these hosts hydrocarbon gases at low temperatures in solution through CH-pi attractive interactions. No encapsulation is observed when the cage structure is too narrow or too large for the guest.

Synthesis and self-assembly of thio derivatives of calix[4]arene on noble metal surfaces

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) provide a simple route to functionalize electrode surfaces with organic molecules. Herein we use cavity-containing derivatives of calix[4]arenes in SAMs. Bound to noble metal surface, the assembled molecules are candidates to serve as molecular sieves for H 2 molecules and H (+) ions, which could have relevance for fuel cell applications. Tetra- O-alkylated calix[4]arenes with thiolacetate and thiolamide wide-rim anchoring groups in cone and partial-cone conformations were designed, synthesized and self-assembled onto Au, Pt, and Pd surfaces. The resulting SAMs were systematically examined. Single crystal X-ray diffraction of 5,11,17,23-tetrakis(thioacetyl)-25,26,27,28-tetra- i-propoxycalix[4]arene confirmed the cone conformation and revealed the cavity dimensions of the SAMs that were formed by immersing noble metal substrates (Au, Pt and Pd deposited on Si-wafers) in solutions of calix[4]arenes. Surface characterization techniques including ellipsometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used, indicating that the metal surface is terminated with a monomolecular layer. Experimental thicknesses obtained from the ellipsometry are consistent with the calculated values. CV results showed 50 to 80% physical passivation against the Fe(CN) 6 (3-/4-) couple, implying an overall relatively low concentration of defects and pinholes in the films. The binding energies of the S2p core level in the XPS were consistent with the literature values and revealed that up to 3.2 out of four anchoring groups were bonded to the noble metal surface.

catena-Poly[[[aqua-(propane-1,3-diamine-κN,N')copper(II)]-μ-fumarato-κO:O'] monohydrate]

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, {[Cu(C₄H₂O₄)(C₃H₁₀N₂)(H₂O)]·H₂O}_n, consists of two Cu^II atoms, half each of two propane-1,3-diamine ligands and two coordinated water mol­ecules, all lying on crystallographic mirror planes, also one fumarate dianion and one uncoordinated water mol­ecule in a general position. The Cu(C₃H₁₀N₂)(H₂O) units are linked via fumarate dianions into a zigzag chain running along the a axis. A longer Cu—O distance [2.873 (3) Å] is to a water mol­ecule bridging equivalent Cu^II atoms in adjacent chains, forming a three-dimensional framework. One of the Cu^II atoms is in a distorted square-pyramidal environment and the other is in a pseudo-octa­hedral geometry of the [5+1] type. O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds are observed in the crystal structure.
