Abstract
![]()
A new methodology for the synthesis of seven-membered
unsaturated
azacycles (tetrahydroazepines) was developed. It is based on the powerful
aza-Prins cyclization in combination with the Peterson-type elimination
reaction. In a single reaction step, a C–N, C–C bond
and an endocyclic double bond are formed. Under mild reaction conditions
and using iron(III) salts as sustainable catalysts, tetrahydroazepines
with different degrees of substitution are obtained directly and efficiently.
DFT calculations supported the proposed mechanism.

Abstract
Activation of a hydroxyl group towards nucleophilic substitution via reaction with methanesulfonyl chloride or PPh3-CBr4 system is a commonly used pathway to various functional derivatives. The reactions of (5R(S),6R(S))-1-X-6-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2-dimethyl- 1-azaspiro[4.4]nonanes 1a–d (X = O·; H; OBn, OBz) with MsCl/NR3 or PPh3-CBr4 were studied. Depending on substituent X, the reaction afforded hexahydro-1H,6H-cyclopenta[c]pyrrolo[1,2-b]isoxazole (2) (for X = O), a mixture of 2 and octahydrocyclopenta[c]azepines (4–6) (for X = OBn, OBz), or perhydro-cyclopenta[2,3]azeto[1,2-a]pyrrol (3) (for X = H) derivatives. Alkylation of the latter with MeI with subsequent Hofmann elimination afforded 2,3,3-trimethyl-1,2,3,4,5,7,8,8a-octahydrocyclopenta[c]azepine with 56% yield.

Abstract
Azetidines fitted with a 3-hydroxypropyl side chain at the 2-position undergo intramolecular N-alkylation after activation of the primary alcohol, and the produced 1-azonia-bicyclo[3.2.0]heptane is opened by different nucleophiles (cyanide, azide, or acetate anions) to produce mixtures of ring expanded pyrrolidines and azepanes, or a unique type of compound. Distribution of produced five- or seven-membered rings depends on the substitution pattern on the azetidine ring and on its side chain, together with the nature of the nucleophile used in the expansion process. Observed regioselectivities for nucleophilic opening are rationalized by quantum mechanical DFT calculations and are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract
Valuable 1-azabicycloalkane derivatives have been synthesized through a novel gold(I)-catalyzed desulfonylative cyclization strategy. An ammoniumation reaction of ynones substituted at the 1-position with an N-sulfonyl azacycle took place in the presence of a gold cation by intramolecular cyclization of the disubstituted sulfonamide moiety onto the triple bond. Depending on the size of the heterocyclic ring and substitution of the substrates, two unprecedented forms of nucleophilic attack on the sulfonyl group were exploited, that is, a N-desulfonylation in the presence of an external protic O nucleophile (37-87 %, 10 examples) and a unique N-to-O 1,5-sulfonyl migration (60-98 %, 9 examples).
