Abstract
Eight rhodium complexes-including four new compounds-with the generic formula [RhCl(cod)(NHC)] (cod is 1,3-cyclooctadiene) differing by the size of their N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand were prepared, characterized, and found to be catalytically active in the hydrothiolation of terminal alkynes with aliphatic or aromatic thiols. The steric bulk of the carbene was found to markedly influence the reaction rate and selectivity. In particular, superbulky NHCs led to the almost quantitative formation of the sole α-vinyl sulfide products. The experimental conditions were optimized to allow the straightforward synthesis of a broad range of mono- and disubstituted α-adducts starting from terminal alkynes (18 examples) and thiols (5 examples). Altogether, the procedure devised in this study provides an easy access to α-vinyl sulfides with full atom economy and a low catalyst loading.

Abstract
The diastereoselective formal synthesis of (-)-quinagolide, a D2 receptor agonist, has been achieved. The synthesis started from l-pyroglutamic acid and relied on utilization of (a) a stereospecific catalytic hydrogenation and diastereoselective Horner-Emmons-Michael cascade to obtain functionalized prolinate, (b) a Lewis acid mediated Pummerer cyclization to construct a tricyclic fused ring system, and (c) a diastereoselective ring expansion via a bicyclic aziridinium intermediate to access the required 3-substituted piperidine scaffold.

Abstract
Phosphines were previously unusable as Pummerer-type nucleophiles due to competing redox chemistry with sulfoxides. Here we circumvent this problem to achieve a formal phosphine Pummerer reaction that offers thioalkyl phosphonium salts that, in turn, give rise to diverse vinyl sulfides via Wittig olefinations. Thirty vinyl sulfides are thus prepared from (alkylthioalkyl)triphenyl phosphonium salts and aldehydes. The hydrolysis of these vinyl sulfides offers an efficient and versatile two-step one-carbon homologation of aldehydes to ketones.

Abstract
The development of new one-pot sequential cyclizations involving a Vilsmeier-Haack reaction followed by an organocatalyzed Mannich reaction is reported. This synthetic strategy gives access to functionalized indolizidines and quinolizidines in one operation from readily synthesized precursors. Yields and diastereoselectivities are good to excellent when formamides are used to trigger the key step, bearing either an electron-rich aryl or a pyrrole as the nucleophilic partner in the first cyclization.

Abstract
The use of sp(3) C-H bonds--which are ubiquitous in organic molecules--as latent nucleophile equivalents for transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has the potential to substantially streamline synthetic efforts in organic chemistry while bypassing substrate activation steps. Through the combination of photoredox-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and nickel catalysis, we have developed a highly selective and general C-H arylation protocol that activates a wide array of C-H bonds as native functional handles for cross-coupling. This mild approach takes advantage of a tunable HAT catalyst that exhibits predictable reactivity patterns based on enthalpic and bond polarity considerations to selectively functionalize α-amino and α-oxy sp(3) C-H bonds in both cyclic and acyclic systems.

Abstract
The base-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamination of 1-ethylaminocyclohexa-2,5-dienes is described. The transformation proceeds through isomerization of the cyclohexa-1,4-dienyl fragment into the corresponding conjugated 1,3-diene prior to the hydroamination step. Attaching a chiral glycinol ether auxiliary on the amino group allows the protonation to occur with complete diastereocontrol. The resulting lithium amide then adds onto the 1,3-dienyl moiety, affording the desired fused pyrrolidine ring along with the corresponding lithium allylic anion. Protonation of the latter then proceeds with high regiocontrol to favor the resulting allylic amines. In contrast, when the reaction was performed on primary amines, fused pyrrolidines bearing a homoallylic amino group were obtained. The stereochemical course of the process and determination of the reaction pathways were established based on calculations performed at the DFT level. Finally, application of the methodology to the enantioselective synthesis of (+)-epi-elwesine, a crinane alkaloid, is described.

Abstract
Catalytic intramolecular hydroamination of dithioketene acetals was developed for the synthesis of cyclic amino acid derivatives. Triggered by the addition of a catalytical amount of n-BuLi, the reaction proceeds to give proline and pipecolic acid derivatives in excellent yields and diastereoselectivity.
