Ultrafast Solvation Dynamics and Vibrational Coherences of Halogenated Boron-Dipyrromethene Derivatives Revealed through Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophores have a wide range of applications, spanning areas from biological imaging to solar energy conversion. Understanding the ultrafast dynamics of electronically excited BODIPY chromophores could lead to further advances in these areas. In this work, we characterize and compare the ultrafast dynamics of halogenated BODIPY chromophores through applying two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). Through our studies, we demonstrate a new data analysis procedure for extracting the dynamic Stokes shift from 2DES spectra revealing an ultrafast solvent relaxation. In addition, we extract the frequency of the vibrational modes that are strongly coupled to the electronic excitation, and compare the results of structurally different BODIPY chromophores. We interpret our results with the aid of DFT calculations, finding that structural modifications lead to changes in the frequency, identity, and magnitude of Franck-Condon active vibrational modes. We attribute these changes to differences in the electron density of the electronic states of the structurally different BODIPY chromophores.

The synthesis of dendroflorin

The first synthesis of dendroflorin has been achieved in 10 steps with an overall yield of 5.5%. The key step in the synthesis features the biphenyl structure is built through Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. In addition, the ortho-localization effect induced by aromatic substituent during the bromination of intermediate 8 is also observed and discussed.

Design, synthesis and photophysical studies of dipyrromethene-based materials: insights into their applications in organic photovoltaic devices

This review article presents the most recent developments in the use of materials based on dipyrromethene (DPM) and azadipyrromethenes (ADPM) for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications. These chromophores and their corresponding BF2-chelated derivatives BODIPY and aza-BODIPY, respectively, are well known for fluorescence-based applications but are relatively new in the field of photovoltaic research. This review examines the variety of relevant designs, synthetic methodologies and photophysical studies related to materials that incorporate these porphyrinoid-related dyes in their architecture. The main idea is to inspire readers to explore new avenues in the design of next generation small-molecule and bulk-heterojunction solar cell (BHJSC) OPV materials based on DPM chromophores. The main concepts are briefly explained, along with the main challenges that are to be resolved in order to take full advantage of solar energy.

Organic aspects. Oxygen-containing functions

In this chapter, most of the reported work deals with the photochemistry of carbonyl compounds; however, the photoreactions of other functions, such as the photo-Claisen rearrangement or the photocleavage of cyclic ethers, are also included. In the present volume, time coverage is 2010–2011, and only original research articles are quoted. In general, reviews or purely theoretical calculations are not systematically included. As usually, the material is organized according to established types of reactions (e.g., Norrish I/II, hydrogen abstraction, Paternò-Büchi, photoelimination, photo-Fries/photo-Claisen, etc.). After presenting the basic photochemical aspects, more specific findings are reported. They include synthetic applications, stereoselectivity, and biological or technological implications. Next, the attention is focused on photochemical reactions in anisotropic media, including (micro)heterogeneous or supramolecular systems, solid matrixes or fully organized crystals. Finally, mechanistic studies based on direct experimental evidence are highlighted, especially when transient absorption spectroscopy or related ultrafast detection are employed.

Dependence of electrochemical and electrogenerated chemiluminescence properties on the structure of BODIPY dyes. Unusually large separation between sequential electron transfers

Electrochemistry and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of selected substituted BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) dyes have been studied. The location and nature of substituents on positions 1-8 are important in predicting the behavior, and especially the stability, of the radical ions formed on electron transfer. Dyes with unsubstituted positions 2, 6, and 8 show a kinetic contribution to both oxidation and reduction. Dyes with only unsubstituted positions 2 and 6 and a substituted 8 position show chemically reversible reduction but irreversible oxidation. Unsubstituted positions 2 and 6 tend to show dimer formation on oxidation. Completely substituted dyes show nernstian oxidation and reduction. Oxidation and reduction studies of simple BODIPY dyes show an unusually large separation between the first and second reduction peaks and also the first and second oxidation peaks, of about 1.1 V, which is very different from that observed for polycyclic hydrocarbons and other heteroaromatic compounds, where the spacing is usually about 0.5 V. Electronic structure calculations confirmed this behavior, and this effect is attributed to a greater electronic energy required to withdraw or add a second electron and a lower relative solvation energy for the dianion or dication compared with those of the polycyclic hydrocarbons. ECL was generated for all compounds either by annihilation or by using a co-reactant.
