Abstract
Abstract:
: Organoselenium chemistry has developed as an important tool in the field of synthetic and medicinal chemistry. Various organoselenium reagents have been developed and used successfully to achieve different organic transformations such as the selenocyclizations, oxyselenenylations and selenoxide eliminations etc. Additionally, the potential of organoselenium reagents is not limited their use as stoichiometric reagents but they have successfully used as organocatalyst in number of synthetic transformations. Various organic and inorganic oxidants have been identified as terminal oxidants to regenerate the active catalytic specie. In this review article, the recent progress of organoselenium reagents in catalysis is being highlighted along with their asymmetric variants.

Abstract
Previously, we found (2Z,4E)-5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienoic acid (ku-76) to be a selective inhibitor of root gravitropic bending of lettuce radicles at 5 μM, with no concomitant growth inhibition, and revealed the structure-activity relationship in this inhibitory activity. The conformation of ku-76 is flexible owing to the open-chain structure of pentan-2,4-dienoic acid with freely rotating single bonds, and the (2Z)-alkene moiety may be isomerized by external factors. To develop more potent inhibitors and obtain insight into the target biomolecules, various analogues of ku-76, fixed through conformation and/or configuration, were synthesized and evaluated. Stereochemical fixation was effective in improving the potency of gravitropic bending inhibition. Finally, we found highly potent conformational and/or configurational analogues (ku-257, ku-294 and ku-308), that did not inhibit root growth. The inhibition of root curvature by these analogues was comparable to that of naptalam.

Abstract
The first tolan derivative-based viscosity sensor (5d) has been synthesized, and its fluorescence intensity and lifetime increase when the viscosity of the solvent increases in methanol-glycerol mixtures. Phthalide (5d) was selected among structurally diverse tolan derivatives through systematic modifications of a simple tolan. To test 5d as a viscosity sensor, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) images of HeLa cells were obtained upon treatment with 5 μM of 5d to map the viscosity of the HeLa cells.

Abstract
Antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) decomposes hydroperoxides by utilizing the different redox chemistry of the selenium and sulfur. Here, we report a Se-catalysed para-amination of phenols while, in contrast, the reactions with sulfur donors are stoichiometric. A catalytic amount of phenylselenyl bromide smoothly converts N-aryloxyacetamides to N-acetyl p-aminophenols. When the para position was substituted (for example, with tyrosine), the dearomatization 4,4-disubstituted cyclodienone products were obtained. A combination of experimental and computational studies was conducted and suggested the weaker Se−N bond plays a key role in the completion of the catalytic cycle. Our method extends the selenium-catalysed processes to the functionalisation of aromatic compounds. Finally, we demonstrated the mild nature of the para-amination reaction by generating an AIEgen 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) product in a fluorogenic fashion in a PBS buffer. Selenium has emerged as a metalloid for the catalytic construction of C–N bonds; however no functionalisation of aromatic compounds has been developed yet. Here, the authors report the para-amination of phenols via two successive sigmatropic rearrangements of a redox versatile Se–N bond.

Abstract
A straightforward synthesis of 2-styrylbenzoic acids from aryl carboxylic acids is disclosed through a carboxylate-assisted coupling under Ru(II) catalysis. This protocol is simple and exhibits broad scope with high tolerance of common organic functional groups, providing good to excellent yields of diverse olefinated products. The efficacy of this protocol has been showcased through sequential syntheses of isochromanone, isocoumarin, and formal synthesis of anacardic acid derivative in good yields.

Abstract
A suitable oxidative system is crucial to electrophilic selenium catalysis (ESC). This short review offers the overview of recent development in ESC with electrophilic N-F reagents as the oxidants. Several highly selective transformations of alkenes such as allylic or vinylic imidation, pyridination, syn-dichlorination, oxidative cyclization and asymmetric cyclization have been described.

Abstract
An efficient approach for organoselenium-catalyzed regioselective C-H pyridination of 1,3-dienes to form pyridinium salts has been developed. This method was also successfully applied to direct C-H pyridination of alkenes. Fluoropyridinium reagents, or initially loaded pyridine derivatives, acted as pyridine sources in the pyridination reactions. The obtained pyridinium salts could be further converted under different conditions. This work is the first example of catalytic C-2 direct C-H functionalization of 1,3-dienes and the first case of organoselenium-catalyzed C-H pyridination.

Abstract
The activation of π-bonds in diynyl esters has been investigated by using soft and hard Lewis acids. In the case of the soft selenium Lewis acid PhSeCl, sequential activation of the alkyne bonds leads initially to an isocoumarin (1 equiv PhSeCl) and then to a tetracyclic conjugated structure with the isocoumarin subunit fused to a benzoselenopyran (3 equiv PhSeCl). Conversely, the reaction with the hard Lewis acidic borane B(C6 F5 )3 initiates a cascade reaction to yield a complex π-conjugated system containing phthalide and indene subunits.

Abstract
Chiral electrophilic selenium catalysts have been applied to catalytic asymmetric transformations of alkenes over the past two decades. However, highly enantioselective reactions with a broad substrate scope have not yet been developed. We report the first successful example of this reaction employing a catalyst based on a rigid indanol scaffold, which can be easily synthesized from a commercially available indanone. The reaction efficiently converts β,γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids into various enantioenriched γ-butenolides under mild conditions.

Abstract
One new benzofuran, (2R)-(2',4'-dihydroxybenzyl)-6,7-methylenedioxy-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (1), one new phenylisocoumarin, 3-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-6,8-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-isocoumarin (2), and one new benzofuroisocoumarin, platyphyllarin C (3), were isolated from the ethanolic extract of Liriope platyphylla aerial parts, along with seventeen known compounds. The structures of the isolates were established by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the literature data. The results indicated that structures 1-3 are uncommon in Nature. Benzofuroisocoumarin 4, flavonoids 9, 10, and 13-15, and homoisoflavonoids 19 and 20 exhibited significant binding activity to estrogen-receptor α and/or β as demonstrated by the SEAP reporter assay system in an MCF-7 cell-line.
