Solvent Effects on the Steric Course of the [2,3]-Wittig Rearrangement of (S,E)-[3-(Allyloxy)prop-1-ene-1,3-diyl]dibenzene and Derivatives

Synergistic Ion-Binding Catalysis Demonstrated via an Enantioselective, Catalytic [2,3]-Wittig Rearrangement

Sigmatropic rearrangements number among the most powerful complexity-building transformations in organic synthesis but have remained largely insensitive to enantioselective catalysis due to the diffuse nature of their transition structures. Here, we describe a synergistic ion-binding strategy for asymmetric catalysis of anionic sigmatropic rearrangements. This approach is demonstrated with the enantioselective [2,3]-Wittig rearrangement of α-allyloxy carbonyl compounds to afford highly enantioenriched homoallylic alcohol products. Chiral thiourea catalysts are shown to engage reactive anions and their countercations through a cooperative set of attractive, noncovalent interactions. Catalyst structure-reactivity-selectivity relationship studies and computational analyses provide insight into catalyst-substrate interactions responsible for enantioinduction and allude to the potential generality of this catalytic strategy.

Base-mediated cascade rearrangements of aryl-substituted diallyl ethers

Two base-mediated cascade rearrangement reactions of diallyl ethers were developed leading to selective [2,3]-Wittig-oxy-Cope and isomerization-Claisen rearrangements. Both diaryl and arylsilyl-substituted 1,3-substituted propenyl substrates were examined, and each exhibits unique reactivity and different reaction pathways. Detailed mechanistic and computational analysis was conducted, which demonstrated that the role of the base and solvent was key to the reactivity and selectivity observed. Crossover experiments also suggest that these reactions proceed with a certain degree of dissociation, and the mechanistic pathway is highly complex with multiple competing routes.

On the preparation and determination of configurational stability of chiral thio- and bromo[D1]methyllithiums

Thio- and bromo[D₁]methyllithiums (ee 99%) were generated from the respective stannanes by tin–lithium exchange at temperatures ranging from 0 to −95 °C. Thio[D₁]methyllithiums 6 were found to be microscopically configurationally labile on the time scale of the thiophosphate-α-mercaptophosphonate rearrangement even at −95 °C. Thio[D₁]methyllithiums 13a and 13b underwent a thia-[2,3]-Wittig rearrangement down to −95 °C and 13b only down to −50 °C. The former were microscopically configurationally stable below −95 °C, and the latter racemized completely at −50 °C. Chiral bromo[D₁]methyllithiums are chemically unstable at −78 °C but microscopically configurationally stable at the time scale of their addition to benzaldehyde and acetophenone.
