Abstract
Calix[4]arene 1 with 25,27-diisoxazolylchloroanthryl groups is a chromogenic and fluorogenic sensor for Cu2+ with a LOD of 1.67 μM by fluorescence. Calix[4]diquinone was obtained in high yield through the redox reaction of ligand 1 with Cu(ClO4)2.

Abstract
Isoxazolo-pyrene tethered calix[4]arenes selectively detect copper(II) ions without interference from related perchlorate ions. The fluorescence emission of the probes, synthesised by nitrile oxide alkyne cycloaddition, and characterised by spectroscopic and crystallographic data, is rapidly reduced by Cu(II) ions. Detection limits are in the micromolar or sub-micromolar range (0.3-3.6 μM) based on a 1 : 1 sensor:analyte interaction. Voltammetric behaviour and 1 H NMR data provide new insights into the sensing mechanism which is dependent on the calixarene substitution pattern. When the calixarene lower rim is fully substituted, Cu(II) detection occurs through a traditional chelation mechanism. In contrast, for calixarenes 1,3-disubstituted on the lower rim, detection takes place through a chemodosimetric redox reaction. The isolation of a calix[4]diquinone from the reaction with excess Cu(ClO4 )2 provides confirmation that the sensor-analyte interaction culminates in irreversible sensor oxidation.

Abstract
Calixarenes are promising scaffolds for an efficient clustered exposition of multiple saccharide antigenic units. Herein we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a calix[6]arene functionalized with six copies of the trisaccharide repeating unit of Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) serotype 19F. This system has demonstrated its ability to efficiently inhibit the binding between the native 19F capsular polysaccharide and anti-19F antibodies, despite a low number of exposed saccharide antigens, well mimicking the epitope presentations in the polysaccharide. The calix[6]arene mobile scaffold has been selected for functionalization with SP 19F repeating unit after a preliminary screening of four model glycocalixarenes, functionalized with N-acetyl mannosamine, and differing in the valency and/or conformational properties. This work is a step forward towards the development of new fully synthetic calixarenes comprising small carbohydrate antigens as potential carbohydrate-based vaccine scaffolds.

Abstract
The simple tetraminocalix[4]arene 1, which contains weak H-bond-donor NH2 groups, is reported to be a highly efficient organocatalyst for the Vinylogous Mukaiyama Aldol Reaction (VMAR) of 2-(trimethylsilyloxy)furan 5 with α-ketoesters 6 a-l under "on-water" conditions owing to the hydrophobic amplification of weak H-bond interactions. The catalytic efficiency of calixarene catalyst 1 was shown to be closely related to its recognition abilities towards the reactants 5 and 6 through a multipoint recognition model. The proposed model provided good explanations for the differences on the reaction rate acceleration and on the stereoselectivity observed with different substrates.

Abstract
Fluorescent chemosensors 1 and 2, with 1,2,4-oxadiazoles as the binding ligands and anthracene as the fluorophore, were synthesized through sequential 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of 25,27-dioxyacetonitrilecalix[4]arenes 8 and 11. The fluorescence of 1 was severely quenched by both Fe(3+) and Cu(2+) , whereas that of 2 was selectively quenched only by Fe(3+) . Control compound 4 was also selectively quenched by Fe(3+) , which implied the importance of anthryl-1,2,4-oxadiazole core; furthermore, it was shown to give various oxidation products such as oxanthrone 13, anthraquinone 14, and imidazolyl oxanthrone 15. In addition to product separation and identification, the fluorescent quenching mechanism of these 9-anthryl-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl derivatives by Fe(3+) is also discussed. Furthermore, it should be noted that the oxadiazole-substituted anthracene 4 and calix[4]arene 2 are Fe(3+) -selective fluorescent chemodosimeters without the interference by Cu(2+) .
