Abstract
CONTEXT Since 1991 when Grätzel et al. improved the conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells to 7.1% by applying nano technology as the first time, the researches on dye-sensitized solar cells have received widely attentions. The organic dye without precious metals has a lower cost, which is easily to get synthesized and its structure is easily decorated, owing a higher photoelectric conversion efficiency at the same time. Therefore, in recent years, the organic dye has attracted people's attentions more and more. In order to better understand the relationship between structure and properties of dye molecules, with ZL003 as a prototype, molecular modifications are then made and a scheme, with rigid fused π-bridge comprising electron-rich and deficient segments. The calculated results indicate that the π-bridge containing dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole and dipyrrolo-dithienobenzothiadiazole as π-bridge has been demonstrated to be successful to significantly redshift the absorption maximum wavelength, extend the lifetime of the first excited state, and decrease the energy gap between the highest occupied molecule orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecule orbital (LUMO). It is hoped that the calculation result of this paper would provide theoretical basis for the experimental synthesis of more efficient dye molecules. METHOD All calculations were performed in Gaussian 09 program package. The ground state geometries (S0) and the first excited state (S1) were optimized using density function theory (DFT) with the hybrid function B3LYP functional, coupled with the 6-31G(d, p) basis set for optimization of molecule ground state conformations. TD-DFT calculations of excited state energies and absorption spectra were performed using MPWPW91 functional combined with the 6-31 + G (d) basis set.

Abstract
Literature studies on the effects of alkyne functionality in manipulating the optical properties of donor-π-acceptor-type molecular scaffolds have been scarce compared to those on the alkene functional group. Here, two structurally isomeric donor-acceptor (D-A) dyes were synthesized to study the positional effect of alkyne functionality (triple bond) on their optical, electrochemical and charge generation properties in order to design efficient dyes for possible application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes, named CAPC and PACC, contain carbazole and cyanoacrylic acid as the donor and acceptor units, respectively, and the π-conjugation length within the molecules was controlled by the introduction of an alkyne group. The D-π-A design was followed in designing CAPC with the alkyne serving as the π-spacer, while in PACC, alkyne was placed on the donor, which was directly in conjugation with the acceptor. This rendered equal conjugation lengths within the designed dyes. With the help of photophysical characterizations, it was concluded that CAPC featured better characteristics for a DSSC dye than PACC. Our conclusions were further supported by the results of transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis, fluorescence lifetime studies and density functional theory.

Abstract
Triarylboranes containing linear or angular benzodithiophene moieties and bearing one or two dimesitylboron units were synthesized. The electrochemical and optical features of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy while DFT calculations were run to analyze the energetic landscape of these systems. For both linear and angular benzodithiophenes, symmetrical disubstitution leads to the highest photoluminescence yields. The linear benzodithiophene disubstituted with two dimesitylboron units proved to be the most interesting and promising molecule as an electron-transport material for organic electronics owing to its LUMO energy level of -2.84 eV which is close to those of commonly used electron transport materials like bathocuproine or bathophenantroline.

Abstract
Previous studies have proposed that the presence of a flexible π-bridge linker is crucial in activating intramolecular singlet exciton fission (iSEF) in multichromophoric systems. In this study, we report the photophysical properties of three analogous perylene diimide (PDI) dendritic tetramers showing flexible/twisted π-bridged structures with α- and β-substitutions and a rigid/planar structure with a β-fused ring (βC) connection to a benzodithiophene-thiophene (BDT-Th) core. The rigidity and enhanced planarity of βC lead to significant intramolecular charge transfer and triplet formation via an intersystem crossing pathway. Steady-state spectroscopic measurements reveal similar absorption and emission spectra for the α-tetramer and the parent PDI monomer. However, their fluorescence quantum yield is significantly different. The negligible fluorescence yield of the α-tetramer (0.04%) is associated with a competitive nonradiative decay pathway. Indeed, for this twisted compound in a high polar environment, a fast and efficient iSEF with a triplet quantum yield of 124% is observed. Our results show that the α-single-bond connections in the α compound are capable of interrupting the coupling among the PDI units, favoring iSEF. We propose that the formation of the double triplet (1[TT]) state is through a superposition of singlet states known as [S1S0][TT]CT, which has been suggested previously for pentacene derivatives. Using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic experiments, we demonstrate that the conformational flexibility of the linker itself is necessary but not sufficient to allow iSEF. For the case of the other twisted tetramer, β, the strong π-π co-facial interactions between the adjacent PDI units in its structure lead to excimer formation. These excimer states trap the singlet excitons preventing the formation of the 1[TT] state, thus inhibiting iSEF.

Abstract
A metal-free organic sensitizer, suitable for the application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), has been designed, synthesized and characterized both experimentally and theoretically. The structure of the novel donor-acceptor-π-bridge-acceptor (D-A-π-A) dye incorporates a triphenylamine (TPA) segment and 4-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid (BTEBA). The triphenylamine unit is widely used as an electron donor for photosensitizers, owing to its nonplanar molecular configuration and excellent electron-donating capability, whereas 4-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid is used as an electron acceptor unit. The influences of I3- /I- , [Co(bpy)3 ]3+/2+ and [Cu(tmby)2 ]2+/+ (tmby=4,4',6,6'-tetramethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) as redox electrolytes on the DSSC device performance were also investigated. The maximal monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) reached 81 % and the solar light to electrical energy conversion efficiency of devices with [Cu(tmby)2 ]2+/+ reached 7.15 %. The devices with [Co(bpy)3 ]3+/2+ and I3- /I- electrolytes gave efficiencies of 5.22 % and 6.14 %, respectively. The lowest device performance with a [Co(bpy)3 ]3+/2+ -based electrolyte is attributed to increased charge recombination.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells have gained widespread attention in recent years because of their low production costs, ease of fabrication and tunable optical properties, such as colour and transparency. Here, we report a molecularly engineered porphyrin dye, coded SM315, which features the prototypical structure of a donor-π-bridge-acceptor and both maximizes electrolyte compatibility and improves light-harvesting properties. Linear-response, time-dependent density functional theory was used to investigate the perturbations in the electronic structure that lead to improved light harvesting. Using SM315 with the cobalt(II/III) redox shuttle resulted in dye-sensitized solar cells that exhibit a high open-circuit voltage VOC of 0.91 V, short-circuit current density JSC of 18.1 mA cm(-2), fill factor of 0.78 and a power conversion efficiency of 13%.

Abstract
Arylamine organic dyes with donor (D), π-bridge (π) and acceptor (A) moieties for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have received great attention in the last decade because of their high molar absorption coefficient, low cost and structural variety. In the early stages, the efficiency of DSCs with arylamine organic dyes with D-π-A character was far behind that of DSCs with ruthenium(II) complexes partly due to the lack of information about the relationship between the chemical structures and the photovoltaic performance. However, exciting progress has been recently made, and power conversion efficiencies over 10% were obtained for DSCs with arylamine organic dyes. It is thus that the recent research and development in the field of arylamine organic dyes employing an iodide/triiodide redox couple or polypyridyl cobalt redox shuttles as the electrolytes for either DSCs or solid-state DSCs has been summarized. The cell performance of the arylamine organic dyes are compared, providing a comprehensive overview of arylamine organic dyes, demonstrating the advantages/disadvantages of each class, and pointing out the field that needs to reinforce the research direction in the further application of DSCs.
