Abstract
Ladder-type molecules, which possess an extended aromatic backbone, are particularly sought within the optoelectronic field. In view of the potential of the 14H-bis[1]benzothieno[3,2-b:2',3'-h]carbazole core as a p-type semiconductor, herein we studied a set of two derivatives featuring a different alkylation patterning. The followed synthetic route, involving various sulfurated carbazole-based molecules, also resulted in a source of fluorophores with different emitting behaviors. Surprisingly, the sulfoxide-containing fluorophores substantially increased their blue fluorescence with respect to the nearly non-emitting sulfur counterparts. On this basis, we could shed light on the relationship between their chemical structure and their emission as an approach for future applications. Considering the performance in organic thin-film transistors, both bisbenzothienocarbazole derivatives displayed p-type characteristics, with hole mobility values up to 1.1 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and considerable air stability. Moreover, the role of the structural design has been correlated with the device performance by means of X-ray analysis and the elucidation of the corresponding single crystal structures.

Abstract
The first Cu-catalyzed dehydrogenative C-O cyclization for the synthesis of furan-fused thienoacenes is described. A variety of heteroacenes including a thieno[3,2-b]furan or a thieno[2,3-b]furan skeleton were synthesized by intramolecular C-H/O-H coupling. The use of a mixed solvent of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and toluene was essential for suppressing side reactions and efficiently promoting the reaction. Double C-O cyclization was also conducted to afford highly π-expanded furan-fused thienoacenes.

Abstract
In recent years, one of the main research interests of our group has been the construction of 6/5 π-systems through the regioselective conversion of parallel alkynes in naphthalene with the aim of exploiting potential fluorescent materials. Herein, the copper-catalyzed synthesis of polysubstituted (Z)-2H-naphtho[1,8-bc]thiophenes from 8-halo-1-ethynylnaphthalenes using potassium ethylxanthate as the sulfur source is reported. In this protocol, a series of thiophene-fused 6/5 π-system compounds was synthesized via copper-catalyzed Ullmann-type C(aryl)-S bond formation and the α-addition of an alkyne bond with high selectivity and in high yields. The synthesized polysubstituted (Z)-2H-naphtho[1,8-bc]thiophenes exhibited solid emission, which made them potential candidates for use in optoelectronic conjugated materials. By using DMSO/D2O (3 : 1) as the reaction solvent, the deuterated products could be obtained in good yields under standard conditions.

Abstract
We report herein our attempt to synthesize an analog of indacenedithiophene (IDT) based on a tetraphenylhexyl substituted, covalently bridged syn-terthienyl unit. Instead of the expected compound the adopted synthetic route led to the formation of an unexpected, new naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene derivative. The structure of this compound was fully characterized by NMR and HRMS as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction and its electronic properties have been analyzed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. A possible mechanism for the formation of this compound is also proposed on the basis of detailed theoretical investigations. Serendipitous synthesis of a novel naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene derivative. Detailed investigation of the structure and properties as well as a possible mechanism for its formation.![]()

Abstract
Fiesselmann thiophene synthesis was applied for the convenient construction of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene derivatives. Thus, new 5- or 6-aryl-3-hydroxythieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylates were obtained by condensation of 5- or 4-aryl-3-chlorothiophene-2-carboxylates, respectively, with methyl thioglycolate in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide. The saponification of the resulting esters, with decarboxylation of the intermediating acids, gave the corresponding thieno[3,2-b]thiophen-3(2H)-ones. The latter ketones were used to synthesize new N,S-heterotetracenes, namely 9H-thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indoles by their treatment with arylhydrazines in accordance with the Fischer indolization reaction.

Abstract
Acenes, heteroacenes, conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (collectively referred to in this review as conjugated polycyclic molecules, CPMs) have fascinated chemists since they were first isolated and synthesized in the mid 19th century. Most recently, these compounds have shown significant promise as the active components in organic devices (e.g., solar cells, thin-film transistors, light-emitting diodes, etc.), and, since 2001, a plethora of publications detail synthetic strategies to produce CPMs. In this review, we discuss reductive aromatization, reductive dearomatization, and elimination/extrusion reactions used to form CPMs. After a brief discussion on early methods to synthesize CPMs, we detail the use of reagents used for the reductive (de)aromatization of precursors containing 1,4-diols/diethers, including SnCl2 and iodide (I- ). Extension of these methods to carbomers and cumulenes is briefly discussed. We then describe low-valent metal species used to reduce endoxides to CPMs, and discuss the methods to directly reduce acenediones and acenones to the respective acene. In the final section, we describe methods used to affect aromatization to the desired CPM via extrusion of small, volatile molecules.

Abstract
We report herein a new approach for the synthesis of tellurium-bridged aromatic compounds based on the sequential electrophilic telluration of C(sp2)-Zn and C(sp2)-H bonds with tellurium(iv) chlorides. A combination of transition metal-catalyzed (migratory) arylmetalation of alkynes and sequential telluration allows for the expedient construction of a library of functionalized benzo[b]tellurophenes. Furthermore, a variety of heteroarene-fused benzotellurophenes and other novel tellurium-embedded polycyclic aromatics can be readily synthesized from the corresponding 2-iodoheterobiaryls.

Ring fusion isomers of dithienoborepins: perturbations of electronic structure, aromaticity, and reactivity in boron-containing polycyclic heteroaromatics. CAN J CHEM 2017. Abstract
Through a combination of rational design and synthetic serendipity, two new structural isomers of the dithienoborepin (DTB) architecture have been realized. Unlike previous members of this family, these boron-containing polycyclic aromatics are unsymmetrical with respect to the fusion orientation of the central borepin and flanking thiophene rings. Characterization of the unsymmetrical dithienoborepins through spectroscopic, crystallographic, electrochemical, and computational methods reveal that the electronics, aromaticity, and chemical reactivity can differ subtly (as for DTB 3) or in dramatic fashion (DTB 4) throughout the series, as dictated by the nature of the unique π-conjugation in each structure. Synthetic elaboration of the three most closely related DTB isomers (1, 2, and 3) into π-extended derivatives by Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings revealed an enhancement in their inherent electronic property differences, demonstrating the feasibility of such an approach for molecular property tuning.

Abstract
A dihydroxy-substituted benzothienobenzothiophene, BTBT(OH)2, was synthesized, and its charge-transfer (CT) salt, β-[BTBT(OH)2]2ClO4, was successfully obtained. Thanks to the introduced hydroxy groups, a hydrogen-bonded chain structure connecting the BTBT molecules and counter anions was formed in the CT salt, which effectively increases the dimensionality of the electronic structure and consequently leads to a stable metallic state.

Abstract
We demonstrate a new approach to solution-processable dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) derivatives that can afford good thin-film transistors having mobilities higher than 0.1 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). The key molecular design strategy is the introduction of one branched alkyl group at the edge of the DNTT core, which improves solubility while retaining semiconducting characteristics in the thin-film state. Dialkylation, i.e., the introduction of two branched alkyl groups on the DNTT core, had a detrimental effect on the semiconducting properties. Although the physicochemical properties of the mono- and dialkylated derivatives at the molecular level were almost the same, the thin-film absorption spectra and the ionization potentials (IPs) were markedly different, indicating that the intermolecular interaction in the thin-film state was affected by the number of alkyl groups. Indeed, the packing structures of the monoalkylated DNTTs in the thin-film state, which were estimated from the XRD patterns, were similar to that of parent DNTT, indicating the existence of the lamella structure with the herringbone packing motif. In sharp contrast, the XRD patterns of the dialkylated DNTT thin films showed poor crystallinity, and the packing structures were significantly different from that of parent DNTT. All the results of structural characterization in the thin-film state and evaluation of device characteristics of the DNTT derivatives with branched alkyl groups indicate that the introduction of a branched alkyl group in the molecular long-axis direction is an effective way to solubilize the rigid, largely π-extended organic semiconducting core without interfering with the semiconducting characteristics in the thin-film state.

Abstract
A method for the facile synthesis of ethene-bridged terthiophenes (EBTTs) in two steps has been developed. The first step is a double Sonogashira coupling between 3',4'-dibromo-2,2':5',2″-terthiophene and terminal alkynes to give dialkynylated terthiophenes, and the second step is a cyclization reaction to afford EBTTs. The fundamental physical properties of EBTTs were also studied.

Abstract
Ruthenium-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 2-ethynylbiaryls was investigated to identify an optimal ruthenium catalyst system. A combination of [η(6) -(p-cymene)RuCl2 (PR3 )] and two equivalents of AgPF6 effectively converted 2-ethynylbiphenyls into phenanthrenes in chlorobenzene at 120 °C over 20 h. Moreover, 2-ethynylheterobiaryls were found to be favorable substrates for this ruthenium catalysis, thus achieving the cycloisomerization of previously unused heterocyclic substrates. Moreover, several control experiments and DFT calculations of model complexes were performed to propose a plausible reaction mechanism.
