Abstract
In the study to improve the light absorption range and intensity of dye sensitizers in the visible region and promote their photovoltaic performance, five novel polymeric metal complexes with sulfur coordination (BDTT-VBT-Ni, BDTT-VBT-Cu, BDTT-VBT-Zn, BDTT-VBT-Cd, and BDTT-VBT-Hg) to be used as D-A-π-A motif dye sensitizers were designed, synthesized, and characterized. In these polymeric metal complexes with sulfur coordination, the metal complexes with sulfur coordination of benzodithiophene derivatives are used as auxiliary electron acceptors, 8-quinolinol derivatives are used as π-bridge and electron acceptors, and thienylbenzene-[1,2-b:4,5-b'] dithiophene (BDTT) are used as electron donors. The effect of different metal complexes with sulfur coordination on the photovoltaic performance of dye sensitizers has been systematically studied. Under AM 1.5 irradiation (100 mW cm-2), the devices of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on five polymeric metal complexes with sulfur coordination exhibited a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 13.43, 15.07, 18.00, 18.99, and 20.78 mA cm-2, respectively, and their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) were 7.10, 8.59, 10.68, 11.23, and 12.89%, respectively, and their thermal decomposition temperatures (Td) were 251, 257, 265, 276, and 277 °C, respectively. The result shows that the Jsc and PCE of five polymeric metal complexes increase by degrees, and the PCE of BDTT-VBT-Hg is up to 12.89%, which is because of the strength of the coordination bonds between Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) and sulfur increases in turn so that the electron-withdrawing ability and electron-transfer ability of auxiliary electron acceptors is enhanced. These results provide a new way to develop stable and efficient metal complexes with sulfur coordination dye sensitizers in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although poly(N-acyl dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole)s have attracted great attention as a new class of conducting polymers with highly stabilized energy levels, hyperbranched polymers based on this monomer type have not yet been studied. Thus, this work aims at the synthesis of novel hyperbranched polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety via the direct arylation polymerization method. Their structures, molecular weights and thermal properties were characterized via 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, GPC, TGA, DSC and XRD measurements, and the optical properties were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. RESULTS Hyperbranched conjugated polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety, linked with either triphenylamine or triphenylbenzene as branching unit, were obtained via direct arylation polymerization of the N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole, 2,5-dibromo 3-hexylthiophene and tris(4-bromophenyl)amine (or 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl)benzene) monomers. Organic solvent-soluble polymers with number-average molecular weights of around 18,000 g mol-1 were obtained in 80-92% yields. The DSC and XRD results suggested that the branching structure hindered the stacking of polymer chains, leading to crystalline domains with less ordered packing in comparison with the linear analogous polymers. The results revealed that the hyperbranched polymer with triphenylbenzene as the branching unit exhibited a strong red-shift of the maximum absorption wavelength, attributed to a higher polymer stacking order as a result of the planar structure of triphenylbenzene. CONCLUSION Both hyperbranched polymers with triphenylamine/triphenylbenzene as branching moieties exhibited high structural order in thin films, which can be promising for organic solar cell applications. The UV-vis absorption of the hyperbranched polymer containing triphenylbenzene as branching unit was red-shifted as compared with the triphenylamine-containing polymer, as a result of a higher chain packing degree.

Abstract
Benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) entity with rigid skeleton is introduced into the conjugated spacer of organic dyes, with triphenylamine as the electron donor and 2-cyanoacrylic acid as the acceptor, have been prepared for dye-sensitized solar cells. Inserting an aromatic entity between BDT and the anchor extends the absorption wavelength of the dyes and improves the dark current suppression efficiency, and consequently leads to better cell performance. Addition of chenodeoxycholic acid coadsorbent alleviates dye aggregation and results in better cell efficiency. The dye inserted with 4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene entity achieves the best efficiency (9.11%) when I-/I3- was used as the electrolyte. When Co(phen)32+/3+ was used as the electrolyte, the efficiency further boosts to 9.88%.

Abstract
The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies with potential of low cost, light weight, and good flexibility. The practical application of DSSCs requires further improvement in power conversion efficiency and long-term stability. Recently, significant progress has been witnessed in DSSC research owing to the novel concept of the D-A-π-A motif for the molecular engineering of organic photosensitizers. New organic and porphyrin dyes based on the D-A-π-A motif can not only enhance photovoltaic performance, but also improve durability in DSSC applications. This Spotlight on Applications highlights recent advances in the D-A-π-A-based photosensitizers, specifically focusing on the mechanism of efficiency and stability enhancements. Also, we find insight into the additional acceptor as well as the trade-off of long wavelength response. The basic principles are involved in molecular engineering of efficient D-A-π-A sensitizers, providing a clear road map showing how to modulate the energy bands, rationally extending the response wavelength, and optimizing photovoltaic efficiency step by step.
