Abstract
Treatment of 2-methylsulfinylbenzazoles with triflic anhydride in the presence of phenols yields the corresponding 4-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-methylsulfanylbenzazoles. This regioselective dehydrative C-H/C-H coupling arylation represents a rare example of functionalizations on the benzene rings of benzo-fused azoles.

Abstract
This article focuses on the development of practical approaches to the preparation of benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazoles) using blue light-induced photochemical cyclization of N,N'-(1,4-aryl)dithioamides in the presence of p-chloranil as a mild oxidant. The proposed method allows to obtain benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazoles) containing donor substituents in the conjugated chain. Photophysical and (spectro)electrochemical properties of 2,6-di([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazole) and -benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis(thiazole) are studied in detail. The properties of the synthesized compounds suggest their potential applications for organic electronics.

Abstract
Photovoltaic properties of solar cells based on fifteen organic dyes have been studied in this work. B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) methods are realized to obtain geometries and optimize the electronic properties, optical and photovoltaic parameters for some quinoxaline derivatives. The results showed that time dependent DFT investigations using the CAM-B3LYP method with the polarized split-valence 6-311G (d,p) basis sets and the polarizable continuum model PCM model were sensibly able to predict the excitation energies, the spectroscopy of the compounds. HOMO and LUMO energy levels of these molecules can make a positive impact on the process of electron injection and dye regeneration. Gaps energy ΔEg, short-circuit current density Jsc, light-harvesting efficiency LHE, injection driving force ΔGinject, total reorganization energy λtotal and open-circuit photovoltage Voc enable qualitative predictions about the reactivity of these dyes.

Abstract
A family of asymmetric thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) fluorescent dye sensors has been developed, and their photophysical sensing properties are reported. The π-conjugated, TTz-bridged compounds are synthesized via a single-step, double condensation/oxidation of dithiooxamide and two different aromatic aldehydes: one with strong electron-donating characteristics and one with strong electron-accepting characteristics. The four reported dyes include electron-donating moieties (N,N-dibutylaniline and N,N-diphenylaniline) matched with three different electron-accepting moieties (pyridine, benzoic acid, and carboxaldehyde). The asymmetric TTz derivatives exhibit strong solvatofluorochromism with Stokes shifts between 0.269 and 0.750 eV (2270 and 6050 cm-1) and transition dipole moments (Δμ = 13-18 D) that are among the highest reported for push-pull dyes. Fluorescence quantum yields are as high as 0.93 in nonpolar solvents, and the fluorescence lifetimes (τF) vary from 1.50 to 3.01 ns depending on the solvent polarity. In addition, thermofluorochromic studies and spectrophotometric acid titrations were performed and indicate the possibility of using these dyes as temperature and/or acid sensors. In vitro cell studies indicate good cell membrane localization, negligible cytotoxicity, promising voltage sensitivities, and photostabilities that are 4 times higher than comparable dyes. Their ease of synthesis and purification, remarkable photophysical properties, and chemically sensitive TTz π-bridge make these asymmetric dye derivatives attractive for environmental and biological sensing or similar molecular optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
The design, synthesis, and characterization of a new class of blue-colored thiophene-substituted Pechmann dyes are reported. Due to a distinguishing blue coloration and the capability to absorb light in one of the most photon-dense regions of the solar spectrum, such compounds are of great interest for application as photoactive materials in organic optoelectronics, in particular, in dye-sensitized solar cells. To achieve fine tuning of the optical and electrochemical properties, the electron-poor thiophene-bis-lactone moiety has been decorated with donor (D) and acceptor groups (A), targeting fully conjugated D-A-π-A structures. The designed structures have been investigated by means of DFT and time-dependent DFT calculations, and the most promising dyes have been synthesized. These molecules represent the very first preparation of unsymmetrical Pechmann derivatives. Optical and electrochemical properties of the new dyes have been studied by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. In two cases, test cells were built proving that a photocurrent can indeed be generated when using electrolytes especially formulated for narrow-band-gap dyes, although with a very low efficiency.

Abstract
Abstract
Substituted thiophene-2-carbaldehydes 1a-dwere utilized in the synthesis of symmetrically substituted thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazoles 3a-d. Bis(5,4-d)thiazoles with thiophene core at the termini are the most employed in the chemistry of materials but exhibit insufficient solubility in majority of organic solvents with notable impact on the low yields of products. Accordingly, the synthetic approach towards 2,5-dithiophen- 2-yl-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (3a) and its substituted derivatives 3b-d is discussed under the various reaction conditions. Appropriate structural characterisations are included with emphasis on relationship between structure and physicochemical properties highlighting the UV-Vis and fluorescence.

Abstract
The synthesis, electrochemical, and photophysical characterization of N,N'-dialkylated and N,N'-dibenzylated dipyridinium thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole derivatives are reported. The thiazolothiazole viologens exhibit strong blue fluorescence with high quantum yields between 0.8-0.96. The dioctyl, dimethyl, and dibenzyl derivatives also show distinctive and reversible yellow to dark blue electrochromism at low reduction potentials. The fused bicyclic thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole heterocycle allows the alkylated pyridinium groups to remain planar, strongly affecting their electrochemical properties. The singlet quantum yield is greatly enhanced with quaternarization of the peripheral 4-pyridyl groups (ΦF increases from 0.22 to 0.96) while long-lived fluorescence lifetimes were observed between 1.8-2.4 ns. The thiazolothiazole viologens have been characterized using cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry, and time-resolved photoluminescence. The electrochromic properties observed in solution, in addition to their strong fluorescent emission properties, which can be suppressed upon 2 e- reduction, make these materials attractive for multifunctional optoelectronic, electron transfer sensing, and other photochemical applications.

Abstract
Chemical or electrochemical one-electron oxidation of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles was found to afford stable radical cations. For chemical oxidation, 1 equivalent of [(4-BrC6H4)3N][SbCl6] (Magic Blue, MB) was added to CH2Cl2 solutions of the thiazoles, and the thus-obtained radicals showed light absorption in the near-infrared region. Electrochemical oxidation also led to bathochromic shifts in the absorption bands, and the obtained spectra were similar to those derived from the chemically oxidized species. These radicals afforded electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra that are consistent with the notion of stable nitrogen radicals (half-life≤385 h). The EPR spectrum of a thiazole containing 4-dimethylaminophenyl groups on the nitrogen atom at the 5-position changed significantly upon adding >3 equivalents of MB. Details of the electronic structures of the experimentally obtained radical cations were generated from theoretical calculations.

Abstract
In this study, we have designed four novel organic donor-π-acceptor dyes (D1, D2, D3, D4), used for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The electron acceptor (anchoring) group was 2-cyanoacrylic for all dyes whereas the electron donor unit varied (coumarin, indoline, carbazole, triphenylamine) and the influence was investigated. These dyes, based on thiazolothiazole as π-spacer, were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and its extensible time dependant DFT (TDDFT) approaches to shed light on how the π-conjugation order influence the performance of the dyes in the DSSCs. The theoretical results have shown that the LUMO and HOMO energy levels of these dyes can be ensuring positive effect on the process of electron injection and dye regeneration. The trend of the calculated HOMO-LUMO gaps nicely compares with the spectral data. Key parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (Jsc), including light harvesting efficiency (LHE), injection driving force (ΔGinject.) and total reorganization energy (λtotal), were discussed. The calculated results of these dyes reveal that dye D2, with indoline as electron donor group, can be used as a potential sensitizer for TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cells due to its best electronic and optical properties and good photovoltaic parameters.

Abstract
Novel ten organic donor-π-acceptor dyes (D-π-A), used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), based on thiazolothiazole were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time dependant DFT (TDDFT) approaches to shed light on how the π-conjugation order influence the performance of the dyes. The electron acceptor (anchoring) group was 2-cyanoacrylic for all dyes whereas the electron-donor unit varied and the influence was investigated. The theoretical results have shown that TDDFT calculations using the Coulomb attenuating method CAM-B3LYP with the polarized split-valence 6-31G (d,p) basis sets and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) were reasonably capable of predicting the excitation energies, the absorption and the emission spectra of the molecules. The LUMO and HOMO energy levels of these dyes can ensure a positive effect on the process of electron injection and dye regeneration. The trend of the calculated HOMO-LUMO gaps nicely compares with the spectral data. Key parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (Jsc), including light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), injection driving force (ΔG(inject)) and total reorganization energy (λtotal), were discussed. In addition, the estimated values of open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) for these dyes were presented. The calculated results of these dyes reveal that the D6 dye can be used as a potential sensitizer for TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cells due to its best electronic and optical properties and good photovoltaic parameters.

Abstract
The reaction of Appel salt 1 with 1H-pyrazol-5-amines 2 gives main products N-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)-1H-pyrazol-5-amines 3, and 6H-pyrazolo[3,4-c]isothiazole-3-carbonitriles 5, together with several minor side products. When the pyrazoles are N-1 methylated, the product ratio 3:5 can be modified by adjusting the pH of the reaction medium: acidic conditions favor formation of the dithiazolylidenes 3, while basic conditions favor formation of pyrazolo[3,4-c]isothiazoles 5. Furthermore, thermolysis of N-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)-1H-pyrazol-5-amines 3 gives 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]thiazole-5-carbonitriles 4. Single crystal X-ray crystallography supports the structure of 4,6-dimethyl-6H-pyrazolo[3,4-c]isothiazole-3-carbonitrile (5a) and helps resolve a previous incorrect structural assignment of 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]thiazole-5-carbonitriles 4.
