Two-Fold Oxidative Coupling of Furan with Indole Provides Modular Access to a New Class of Tetra-(Hetero)Arylated Furans with Up to Four Different Substituents. Chemistry 2024; 30:e202402929. Abstract
Highly arylated propeller-shaped heteroarenes constitute an intriguing class of molecular scaffolds for material science applications. Among these, tetraarylated furans demonstrate differentiated properties as compared to other similar heterocyclic cores. The synthetic complexity to access tetraarylated furans increases significantly with increasing number of different peripheral aryl groups. There are only a very limited number of methodologies available to access furans with four different (hetero)aryl substituents. Notably, none of these involve direct oxidative coupling on the furan core as the method of choice. Herein, we report the first methodology based on a sequential two-fold oxidative C-C coupling of furans with indoles to access bis(indolyl)furans (BIFs) - a new class of 'extremely congested' tetra-(hetero)arylated furans with up to four different substituents. The reaction is mediated by inexpensive, earth-abundant FeCl3⋅6H2O and displays high efficiency, wide substrate scope, modularity and aqueous compatibility. Moreover, we also present the first validation of the distinct aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) property of the tetraarylated furans beyond only phenyls as peripheral groups and disclose new mechanistic underpinnings for the same.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed α-oxygenation of aryl benzyl ketones is merged with a unique water/O2-induced release of cyanide ions from K3Fe(CN)6 and a benzil-cyanide reaction. This strategy gives expedient access to cyanohydrin esters starting directly from broadly accessible aryl benzyl ketones. The cyanide release strategy was further integrated with a copper catalyzed oxygenation-decarbonylation sequence to produce cyanohydrin esters from 1,3-diketones.

Abstract

A protocol
for silver-catalyzed controlled intermolecular cross-coupling
of silyl enolates is disclosed. The protocol displays good functional
group tolerance and allows efficient preparation of a series of synthetically
useful 1,4-diketones. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest
that the reaction proceeds through a one-electron process involving
free radical species in which PhBr acts as the oxidant.

Abstract
An efficient and green route of C-C bond formation was disclosed to construct 2,3-diaryl-1,4-diketones from α-methylene ketones by the catalysis of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant in water. This reaction affords the desired products in good to excellent yields from readily available materials, with a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, tetrasubstituted furan and pyrrole were smoothly constructed from α-methylene ketones in one pot with 96 and 90% yields, respectively.

Abstract
A novel K2S2O8-promoted C–Se bond formation from cross-coupling under neutral conditions has been developed. A variety of aldehydes and ketones react well using K2S2O8 as the oxidant in the absence of catalyst and afford desired products in moderate to excellent yields. This protocol provides a very simple route for the synthesis of α-phenylseleno carbonyl compounds and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Abstract
Selective intermolecular oxidative cross-coupling of enolates, which is a bond-forming reaction between carbanion equivalents, remains as an unsolved issue despite its potential utility for the direct synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,4-diones. The main difficulty derives from the unavoidable homo-coupling. Our strategy depends on the selective one-electron oxidation of one enolate to afford an electrophilic carbonyl α-radical species, followed by trapping with another enolate. The present study demonstrates the selective oxovanadium(V)-induced cross-coupling between boron and silyl enolates.

Abstract
Here we report an efficient and practical method for the preparation of 1,4-diketones by direct coupling of α-haloketones with silyl enolates at room temperature. No catalysts were required in our protocol.
