Computational Studies of Carboxylate-Assisted C-H Activation and Functionalization at Group 8-10 Transition Metal Centers

Computational studies on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation and functionalization at group 8-10 transition metal centers are reviewed. This Review is organized by metal and will cover work published from late 2009 until mid-2016. A brief overview of computational work prior to 2010 is also provided, and this outlines the understanding of carboxylate-assisted C-H activation in terms of the "ambiphilic metal-ligand assistance" (AMLA) and "concerted metalation deprotonation" (CMD) concepts. Computational studies are then surveyed in terms of the nature of the C-H bond being activated (C(sp²)-H or C(sp³)-H), the nature of the process involved (intramolecular with a directing group or intermolecular), and the context (stoichiometric C-H activation or within a variety of catalytic processes). This Review aims to emphasize the connection between computation and experiment and to highlight the contribution of computational chemistry to our understanding of catalytic C-H functionalization based on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation. Some opportunities where the interplay between computation and experiment may contribute further to the areas of catalytic C-H functionalization and applied computational chemistry are identified.

Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation/Heterocyclization as a Macrocyclization Strategy. Synthesis of Macrocyclic Pyridones

Structurally diverse macrocyclic pyridones can be efficiently synthesized by a rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/heterocyclization of ω-alkynyl α-substituted acrylic hydroxamates. The use of a O-pivaloyl hydroxamate as directing group was crucial to achieve efficient catalyst turnover in a redox-neutral process.

A Benefit of Using the IDSCRF- over UFF-Radii Cavities and Why Joint Correlations of NMR Chemical Shifts Can Be Advantageous: Condensed Pyridines as an IEF-PCM/GIAO/DFT Case Study

Herein, an advantage of the use of IDSCRF- over UFF-radii-based solute cavities in GIAO/DFT calculations is presented for the ¹³C and especially ¹⁵N NMR chemical shifts made for several bicyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles in CDCl₃ solution treated within the classical IEF-PCM solvation scheme. Successful application of the IDSCRF-radii in the non 1:1 joint multinuclear ¹H/¹³C and particularly ¹H/¹³C/¹⁵N correlations of the measured δ_H,C(,N) values to those obtained theoretically is also documented for a series of test systems (-268 ≤ δ_N ≤ -72 ppm). The experimentally yet unknown δ_N's were found in this way for the title compounds via a trinuclear eq 1 determined for an optimally chosen value of the multiplication factor of initial raw δ_H data (m_H = 10). Such a simultaneous analysis of the δ_H,C(,N) data is proposed as a novel method to study the solution structure of the other similar conformationally homogeneous (bio)organic compounds. The issue of small spurious imaginary vibrational frequencies computed for a few molecular systems using the Gaussian 09 default UFF-radii is briefly considered as well.

Multi-conformer molecules in solutions: an NMR-based DFT/MP2 conformational study of two glucopyranosides of a vitamin E model compound

Overall geometries of both glucosyl derivatives of PMC were found on the basis of their NMR spectra in CDCl₃and relatedδ_H,C/ⁿJ_HHIEF-PCM(UFF,CHCl₃)/DFT calculational results.

Mechanistic Understanding of the Divergent Reactivity of Cyclopropenes in Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation/Cycloaddition Reactions of N-Phenoxyacetamide and N-Pivaloxybenzamide

Density functional theory calculations were conducted to develop a mechanistic understanding of the Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/cycloaddition reactions of N-phenoxyacetamide and N-pivaloxybenzamide with cyclopropenes, and insights into the substrate-dependent chemoselectivity were provided. The results showed that the divergence originated from the different reactivity of the seven-membered rhodacycles from the insertion of cyclopropene into the Rh-C bond. In reactions of N-pivaloxybenzamide, such an intermediate undergoes the pivalate migration to form a cyclic Rh(V)-nitrenoid intermediate in a reaction that is easier than the opening of the three-membered ring by β-carbon elimination, leading finally to a tricyclic product with retention of the cyclopropane moiety by facile reductive elimination. While similar Rh(V)-nitrenoid species could also be possibly formed in Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed reactions of N-phenoxyacetamide, the β-carbon elimination occurs more easily from the corresponding seven-membered rhodacycle intermediate and the subsequent O-N bond cleavage gives rise to an unexpected dearomatized (E)-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dienone intermediate. The E/Z isomerization of this intermediate is required for the final cyclization to 2H-chromene, and interesting metal-ligand cooperative catalysis with Rh(III) carboxylate was disclosed in the C═C double bond rotation process.
