Abstract
OBJECTIVE Aminomethylphenol molecules have wider applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, plant protection and promising functional materials. The development of an efficient and practical method to prepare this class of compound is highly desirable from both environmental and economical points of view. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to establish an effective synthetic method for preparing aminomethylphenol derivatives, the Petasis borono-Mannich reaction of salicylaldehyde, phenylboronic acid and 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroisoquinoline was selected as a model reaction. A variety of reaction conditions are investigated, including solvent and temperature. The generality and limitation of the established method were also evaluated. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION It was found that model reaction can be carried out in cyclopentyl methyl ether at 80 oC under catalyst-free conditions. This protocol, with broad substrate applicability, the reaction of various arylboronic acid, secondary amine and salicylaldehyde proceeded smoothly under optimal reaction conditions to afford various aminomethylphenol derivatives in high yields. A practical, scalable, and high-yielding synthesis of aminomethylphenol derivatives was successfully accomplished. CONCLUSION A catalyst-free practical method for the synthesis of minomethylphenol derivatives based on Petasis borono-Mannich (PBM) reaction of various arylboronic acid, secondary amine and salicylaldehyde in cyclopentyl methyl ether has been developed. The salient features of this protocol are avoidance of any additive/catalyst and toxic organic solvents, use of cyclopentyl methyl ether as the reaction medium, clean reaction profiles, easy operation, and high to excellent yield.

Abstract
AbstractBenzimidazole is an important heterocycle that is widely researched and utilized by the pharmaceutical industry and is one of the five most commonly used five-membered aromatic heterocyclic compounds approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. In view of their wide-ranging bioactivities, systems containing benzimidazole as one of the moieties occupy a special place among other benzimidazole derivatives. Since 2010, many improved synthetic strategies have been developed for the construction of hetaryl- and arylbenzimidazole molecular scaffolds under environmentally benign conditions. This review emphasizes the recent trends and modifications frequently used in the synthesis of derivatives of benzimidazole such as the Phillips–Ladenburg and Weidenhagen reactions, as well as entirely new methods of synthesis, involving oxidative cyclization, cross-coupling, ring distortion strategy, and rearrangements carried out under environmentally benign conditions.1 Introduction2 From 1,2-Diaminobenzenes with Various One-Carbon Unit Suppliers2.1 Phillips–Ladenburg Reaction2.1.1 With (Het)arenecarboxylic Acids2.2.2 With (Het)arenecarboxylic Acid Derivatives2.2 Weidenhagen Reaction2.2.1 With (Het)arenecarbaldehydes or (Het)aryl Methyl Ketones2.2.2 With Primary Alcohols2.2.3 With Primary Alkylamines2.2.4 With 2-Methylazaarenes2.2.5 With Other One-Carbon Fragment Suppliers3 From 2-Haloacetanilides and Amines4 From Amidines5 From Tetrahydroquinazolines6 Mamedov Rearrangement7 Conclusions and Outlook

Abstract
A novel approach for the visible-light-initiated synthesis of 2-amino-4H-pyran-3,5-dicarbonitrile derivatives via a one-pot, three-component reaction of aldehydes or isatins, malononitrile, and α-cyano ketones has been developed. The reaction was carried out at room temperature in ethanol/water to give the corresponding products with a wide range of functional groups in high yields. This process did not require any additives or chromatographic separation and could be applied for gram-scale synthesis.

Abstract
We have developed a new method for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles via amidinyl radicals generated by visible-light-promoted reduction of N-phenyl amidoxime esters in the presence of an iridium photocatalyst. This is the first report of the use of N-phenyl amidoxime esters as amidinyl radical precursors, and the first use of substituted benzene rings as amidinyl radical acceptors. This method widens the application range of substrates and overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional methods for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles, which requires harsh reaction conditions, involves difficult-to-prepare substituted o-phenylenediamine substrates, and produces acidic waste.

Abstract
The use of abundantly available transition metals in reactions that have been preferentially mediated by rare noble metals, for example, hydrogenations, is a desirable aim in catalysis and an attractive strategy for element conservation. The observation of novel selectivity patterns with such inexpensive metal catalysts is especially appealing. Herein, we report a novel, robust, and reusable cobalt catalyst that permits the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes in the presence of highly hydrogenation-sensitive functional groups, as well as the direct synthesis of imines from nitroarenes and aldehydes or ketones in the presence of such substituents. Furthermore, we introduce the first base-metal-mediated direct synthesis of benzimidazoles from nitroarenes and aldehydes. Functional groups that are easy to hydrogenate are again well tolerated.
