Abstract
Chiral carbon-carbon (C-C) and carbon-heteroatom (C-X) bonds are pervasive and very essential in natural products, bioactive molecules, and functional materials, and their catalytic construction has emerged as one of the hottest research fields in synthetic organic chemistry. The last decade has witnessed vigorous progress in Rh(I)-catalyzed asymmetric C-H functionalization as a complement to Rh(II) and Rh(III) catalysis. This review aims to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date summary covering the recent advances in Rh(I)-catalyzed C-H activation for asymmetric functionalization. In addition to the development of diverse reactions, chiral ligand design and mechanistic investigation (inner-sphere mechanism, outer-sphere mechanism, and 1,4-Rh migration) will also be highlighted.

Abstract
Asymmetric catalysis holds a prominent position among the important developments in chemistry during the 20th century. This was acknowledged by the 2001 Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded to Knowles, Noyori, and Sharpless for their development of chiral metal catalysts for organic transformations. The key feature of the catalysts was the crucial role of the chiral ligand and the nature of the metal ions, which promoted the catalytic conversions of the substrates via direct coordination. Subsequently the development of asymmetric organic catalysis opened new avenues to the synthesis of enantiopure compounds, avoiding any use of metal ions. Recently, an alternative approach to asymmetric catalysis emerged that relied on the catalytic functions of the ligands themselves boosted by coordination to metal ions. In other words, in these hybrid chiral catalysts the substrates are activated not by the metal ions but by the ligands. The activation and enantioselective control occurred via well-orchestrated and custom-tailored non-covalent interactions of the substrates with the ligand sphere of chiral metal complexes. In these metal-templated catalysts, the metal served either as a template (a purely structural role), or it constituted the exclusive source of chirality (metal-centred chirality due to the spatial arrangement of achiral or chiral bi-/tridentate ligands around an octahedral metal centre), and/or it increased the Brønsted acidity of the ligands. Although the field is still in its infancy, it represents an inspiring combination of both metal and organic catalysis and holds major unexplored potential to push the frontiers of asymmetric catalysis. Here we present an overview of this emerging field discussing the principles, applications and perspectives on the catalytic use of chiral metal complexes that operate as "organocatalysts in disguise". It has been demonstrated that these chiral metal complexes are efficient and provide high stereoselective control in asymmetric hydrogen bonding catalysis, phase-transfer catalysis, Brønsted acid/base catalysis, enamine catalysis, nucleophilic catalysis, and photocatalysis as well as bifunctional catalysis. Also, many of the catalysts have been identified as highly effective catalysts at remarkably low catalyst loadings. These hybrid systems offer many opportunities in the synthesis of chiral compounds and represent promising alternatives to metal-based and organocatalytic asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
Complexation in situ of 1-methylpiperidine, racemic 1,2-dimethylpyrrolidin, and racemic 1,2-dimethylpiperidine with rhodium(II) tetracarboxylates in chloroform was studied by 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) methods. As substrates, three dirhodium(II) compounds were applied, tetraacetate, tetrakistrifluoroacetate, and a derivative of optically pure Mosher's acid. Due to conformational flexibility, free and complexed ligands can adopt potentially various conformations. The NMR titration experiments revealed the subsequent formation of 1:1 and 1:2 complexes, depending on the molar ratio of substrate to ligand. Conformations of free and complexed ligands were examined by the comparison of experimental and DFT gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) calculated chemical shifts and by the analysis of the internal energy of the compounds. For some ligand and substrate combinations, a mixture of complexes differing in ligand conformations was formed. Complexes of Mosher's acid derivative of rhodium(II) with racemic 1,2-dimethylpyrrolidin and 1,2-dimethylpiperidine exhibited NMR chiral recognition phenomenon, manifested by splitting of signals in 13 C NMR and 1 H,13 C HSQC spectra.

Abstract
We report a versatile, highly enantioselective intramolecular hydrocarbonation reaction that provides a direct access to heteropolycyclic systems bearing chiral quaternary carbon stereocenters. The method, which relies on an iridium(I)/bisphosphine chiral catalyst, is particularly efficient for the synthesis of five-, six- and seven-membered fused indole and pyrrole products, bearing one and two stereocenters, with enantiomeric excesses of up to >99 %. DFT computational studies allowed to obtain a detailed mechanistic profile and identify a cluster of weak non-covalent interactions as key factors to control the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Sustainable transformations towards the production of valuable chemicals constantly attract interest, both in terms of academic and applied research. C–H activation has long been scrutinized in this regard, given that it offers a straightforward pathway to prepare compounds of great significance. In this context, directing groups (DG) have paved the way for chemical transformations that had not been achievable using traditional reactions. Few steps, high yields, selectivity and activation of inert substrates are some of the invaluable assets of directed catalysis. Additionally, the employment of traceless directing groups (TDG) greatly improves and simplifies this strategy, enabling the realization of multi-step reactions in one-pot, cascade procedures. Cheap, abundant, readily available transition metal salts and complexes can catalyze a plethora of reactions employing TDGs, usually under low catalyst loadings—rarely under stoichiometric amounts, leading in greater atom economy and milder conditions with increased yields and step-economy. This review article summarizes all the work done on TDG-assisted catalysis with manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, or copper catalysts, and discusses the structure-activity relationships observed, by presenting the catalytic pathways and range of transformations reported thus far.

Abstract
It has been established that a cyclopentadienyl (Cp) RhIII complex with two aryl groups and a pendant amide moiety catalyzes the formal Lossen rearrangement/alkenylation cascade of N-pivaloyl heterole carboxamides with internal alkynes, leading to alkenylheteroles. Interestingly, the use of sterically demanding internal alkynes afforded not the alkenylation but the [3+2] annulation products ([5,5]-fused heteroles). In these reactions, the pendant amide moiety of the CpRhIII complex may accelerate the formal Lossen rearrangement. The use of five-membered heteroles may deter reductive elimination to form strained [5,5]-fused heteroles; instead, protonation proceeds to give the alkenylation products. Bulky alkyne substituents accelerate the reductive elimination to allow the formation of the [5,5]-fused heteroles.

Abstract
A Ni-Al bimetallic catalyzed enantioselective C-H exo-selective cyclization of imidazoles with alkenes has been developed. A series of bi- or polycyclic imidazoles with β-stereocenter were obtained in up to 98% yield and >99% ee. The bifunctional SPO ligand-promoted bimetallic catalysis proved to be critical to this challenging stereocontrol.

Abstract
The enantioselective intermolecular sp(3) C-H functionalization at the allylic and benzylic positions was achieved using rhodium-catalyzed reactions with 4-phenyl-N-(methanesulfonyl)-1,2,3-triazole. The optimum dirhodium tetracarboxylate catalyst for these reactions was Rh2(S-NTTL)4. The rhodium-bound α-imino carbene intermediates preferentially reacted with tertiary over primary C-H bonds in good yields and moderate levels of enantioselectivity (66-82% ee). This work demonstrates that N-sulfonyltriazoles can be applied to the effective C-H functionalization at sp(3) C-H bonds of substrates containing additional functionality.

Abstract
Perfluoroalkylated indoles are valuable compounds in drug discovery. A Pd(0)-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H functionalization enables access to 2-(trifluoromethyl)indoles from trifluoroacetimidoyl chlorides. These are stable compounds, easily obtained from anilines. The cyclization operates with catalyst loadings as low as 1 mol % and accommodates a variety of substituents.
