Abstract
In this study, we reinvestigated the straightforward nitration of eugenol using traditional reagents and bismuth nitrate. NMR analysis of the obtained products revealed that the regioselectivity of eugenol nitration was independent of the inorganic nitrating reagent used, consistently resulting in the formation of 6-nitroeugenol. This contradicts previous literature reports because the elusive synthesis of 5-nitroeugenol using Bi(NO3)3·5H2O was not achievable through straightforward methods; instead, this isomer could only be prepared via the well-established three-step synthesis. Theoretical investigations using DFT calculations, considering both the dielectric constant of the medium and explicit water molecules, substantiated this regioselectivity. It was found that hydration water played a critical role in the formation of a Zundel cation, shifting the thermodynamic equilibrium toward the exclusive production of 6-nitroeugenol. These results imply that all biological studies involving eugenol derivatives synthesized via direct nitration with Bi(NO3)3·5H2O should be reviewed, as they dealt with 6-substituted eugenol derivatives rather than the previously assumed 5-substituted eugenol.

Abstract
An efficient and straightforward route toward the isatin-type natural product melosatin A is reported, employing a trisubstituted aniline as a key intermediate. The latter was synthesized in 4 steps and 60% overall yield from eugenol, through its regioselective nitration, sequentially followed by a Williamson methylation, an olefin cross-metathesis with 4-phenyl-1-butene and the simultaneous reduction of olefin and nitro groups. The final step, a Martinet cyclocondensation of the key aniline with diethyl 2-ketomalonate, provided the natural product with 68% yield.

Abstract
Biobased materials, derived from biomass building blocks, are essential in the pursuit of sustainable materials. Eugenol, a natural phenol obtained from clove oil, but also from lignin depolymerization, possesses a chemical structure that allows its easy modification to obtain a broad and versatile platform of biobased monomers. In this Perspective, an overview of the variety of reactions that have been executed on the allylic double bond, phenol hydroxyl group, aromatic ring, and methoxy group is given, focusing our attention on those to obtain monomers suitable for different polymerization reactions. Furthermore, possible applications and perspectives on the eugenol-derived materials are provided.

Abstract
A chemical modification study was conducted on the marine natural product aaptamine (1), isolated from the marine sponge Aaptos aaptos. Thirty new derivatives substituted by various aromatic rings at the 3- and 7-positions of aaptamine were prepared by bromination, followed by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Sixteen compounds displayed cytotoxicities to four cancer cell lines (IC50 < 10 μM). In particular, compound 5i demonstrated a significant antiproliferative effect on the extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKT) cell line SNK-6 with an IC50 value of 0.6 μM. Additionally, compound 5i showed cytotoxicities to multiple lymphoma cell lines, including Ramos, Raji, WSU-DLCL2, and SU-DHL-4 cells.

Abstract
The C-H annulation of the five-position of quinolines and acrylates to afford heterocycles is an active field of research in organic synthesis. Herein the annulation of 4-aminoquinolines with acrylates through two consecutive C-H activations catalyzed by Rh(III) is described. The reaction proceeds with high atom efficiency under mild reaction conditions, and this protocol will provide appealing strategies for the synthesis of fused quinoline heterocycles.

Abstract
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C10H11NO4, which was synthesized via nitration reaction of eugenol (4-allyl-2-meth-oxy-phenol) with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid, consists of three independent mol-ecules of similar geometry. Each mol-ecule displays an intra-molecular hydrogen bond involving the hydroxide and the nitro group forming an S(6) motif. The crystal cohesion is ensured by inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds in addition to π-π stacking inter-actions between the aromatic rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.6583 (17)-4.0624 (16) Å]. The Hirshfeld surface analysis and the two-dimensional fingerprint plots show that H⋯H (39.6%), O⋯H/H⋯O (37.7%), C⋯H/H⋯C (12.5%) and C⋯C (4%) are the most important contributors towards the crystal packing.

Abstract
A general procedure for the synthesis of 2-substituted tetrahydro-1,3-thiazepines by MW-assisted cyclization of 4-thioamidobutanols is presented. The acyclic precursors were prepared in high overall yields by an expeditious three-step diacylation/thionation/deprotection sequence from 4-aminobutanol. Microwave-assisted ring closure of 4-thioamido alcohols promoted by trimethylsilyl polyphosphate (PPSE) in solvent-free conditions allowed for the synthesis of several hitherto unreported seven-membered iminothioethers bearing 2-aryl, alkenyl, aralkyl and alkyl substituents. The cyclodehydration reaction is likely to involve an SN2-type displacement and affords good to excellent yields of the desired heterocycles in very short reaction times.

Abstract
A straightforward and convenient approach toward the first total synthesis of ampullosine, a structurally unique 3-methylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from Sepedonium ampullosporum, is reported. Access to the related O-methyl ampullosine methyl ester from a common intermediate is also disclosed. The synthetic sequence toward the natural product comprised a Kolbe-type carboxylation of 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and further esterification of the diacid, followed by masking of one of the phenols through selective ester reduction and subsequent acetonide formation. Installation of the three-carbon atom required for the 3-methylpyridine ring was performed by triflation of the remaining free phenol and a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura reaction with potassium E-propenyltrifluoroborate. Deprotection of the acetonide, followed by partial oxidation of the benzylic alcohol to the salicylaldehyde, O-methylation of the free phenol and hydrazonation of the resulting ortho-anisaldehyde derivative gave a hydrazone-based 1-azatriene. This was further subjected to 6π-azaelectrocyclization to afford permethylampullosine (11 steps, 14% overall yield), whereas exhaustive demethylation with AlI3 generated in situ gave ampullosine (12 steps, 3.2% global yield). The first total synthesis of ampullosine, a unique isoquinoline isolated from Sepedonium ampullosporum, is reported. The related permethylampullosine was also synthesized.![]()

Abstract
The use of CeCl3·7H2O as an efficient and eco-friendly promoter for the convenient synthesis of methoximes derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones, is reported. The transformations entail the use of equimolar amounts of MeONH2·HCl and NaOAc in EtOH at 50°C, and no special precautions are needed with regard to the presence of oxygen. The scope and limitations of the transformation were studied and a reaction mechanism was proposed.
