Abstract
In nature, organophosphates provide key functions such as information storage and transport, structural tasks, and energy transfer. Since condensations are unfavourable in water and nucleophilic attack at phosphate is kinetically inhibited, various abiogenesis hypotheses for the formation of organophosphate are discussed. Recently, the application of phosphites as phosphorylation agent showed promising results. However, elevated temperatures and additional reaction steps are required to obtain organophosphates. Here we show that in liquid sulfur dioxide, which acts as solvent and oxidant, efficient organophosphate formation is enabled. Phosphorous acid yields up to 32.6% 5' nucleoside monophosphate, 3.6% 5' nucleoside diphosphate, and the formation of nucleoside triphosphates and dinucleotides in a single reaction step at room temperature. In addition to the phosphorylation of organic compounds, we observed diserine formation. Thus, we suggest volcanic environments as reaction sites for biopolymer formation on Early Earth. Because of the simple recyclability of sulfur dioxide, the reaction is also interesting for synthesis chemistry.

Abstract
Organic photochemistry and electrochemistry currently receive tremendous attention in organic synthesis as both techniques enable the reagent-less activation of organic molecules without using expensive and hazardous redox reagents. The incorporation of SO2 into organic molecules is a relatively modern research topic, which likewise gains immense popularity since the discovery of the SO2 surrogate DABSO. Sulfur-containing organic molecules are omnipresent in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This review covers the recent progress in electrochemical and photochemical methodologies for the incorporation and uses of SO2 in the synthesis of value-added compounds. Additionally, different work techniques are demonstrated for the synthetic application of SO2.

Abstract
Liquid SO2 is a polar solvent that dissolves both covalent and ionic compounds. Sulfur dioxide possesses also Lewis acid properties, including the ability to covalently bind Lewis basic fluoride ions in a relatively stable fluorosulfite anion (FSO2 -). Herein we report the application of liquid SO2 as a promoting solvent for glycosylation with glycosyl fluorides without any external additive. By using various temperature regimes, the method is applied for both armed and disarmed glucose and mannose-derived glycosyl fluorides in moderate to excellent yields. A series of pivaloyl-protected O- and S-mannosides, as well as one example of a C-mannoside, are synthesized to demonstrate the scope of the glycosyl acceptors. The formation of the fluorosulfite species during the glycosylation with glycosyl fluorides in liquid SO2 is proved by 19F NMR spectroscopy. A sulfur dioxide-assisted glycosylation mechanism that proceeds via solvent separated ion pairs is proposed, whereas the observed α,β-selectivity is substrate-controlled and depends on the thermodynamic equilibrium.

Abstract
This work presents the first electrochemical preparation of alkyl arylsulfonates by direct anodic oxidation of electron-rich arenes. The reaction mechanism features a multi-component reaction consisting of electron-rich arenes, an alcohol of choice and excess SO2 in an acetonitrile-HFIP reaction mixture. In-situ formed monoalkyl sulfites are considered as key intermediates with bifunctional purpose. Firstly, this species functions as nucleophile and secondly, excellent conductivity is provided. Several primary and secondary alcohols and electron-rich arenes are implemented in this reaction to form the alkyl arylsulfonates in yields up to 73 % with exquisite selectivity. Boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDD) are employed in divided cells, separated by a simple commercially available glass frit.

Abstract
The use of liquid sulfur dioxide as a reaction solvent to promote chemical transformations of alkynes has been explored. First, a combination of liquid SO2 and In(OTf)3 or Hf(OTf)4 as a catalyst allows to perform hydration of aryl alkynes under mild conditions without a direct addition of Brønsted acid. Second, novel catalyst-free conditions for the synthesis of α-vinyl iodides, bromides, and chlorides from aryl alkynes have been developed in liquid SO2 using group I and II metal halides and ammonium iodide as the halide ion sources.

Abstract
Two regiodivergent approaches to intermolecular cyclization of 2-aminobenzothiazoles with β-ketoesters and amides have been developed, controlled by the reagents employed. With the Brønsted base KOt-Bu and CBrCl3 as radical initiator, benzo[d]imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles are synthesized via attack at the α-carbon and keto carbon of the β-ketoester moiety. In contrast, switching to the Lewis acid catalyst, In(OTf)3, results in the regioselective nucleophilic attack at both carbonyl groups forming benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-4-ones instead.
