Abstract
Herein, we report the asymmetric Ru/cinchonine dual catalysis that provides straightforward access to enantioselective synthesis of C-3 substituted phthalides via tandem C-H activation/Michael addition cascade. The use of readily accessible and less expensive [RuCl2(p-cym)]2 and cinchonine catalyst for the one-pot assembly of chiral phthalides greatly overcomes the present trend of using highly sophisticated catalysts. The developed method provides access to both enantiomers of a product using pseudoenantiomeric cinchona alkaloids as catalysts streamlining the synthesis of phthalide in both the optically active forms.

Abstract
The Rh-catalyzed ortho-C(sp2 )-H functionalization of 8-aminoquinoline-derived benzamides with aliphatic acyl fluorides generated in situ from the corresponding acids has been developed. This reaction initiated with 8-aminoquinoline-directed ortho-C(sp2 )-H acylation, which was accompanied by subsequent intramolecular nucleophilic acyl substitution of amide group to produce alkylidene phthalides This approach exhibits high stereo-selectivity for Z-isomer products, and tolerates a variety of functional groups as well as aliphatic carboxylic acids with diverse structural scaffolds.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of air‐stable and conveniently crystallizable RhIII‐cyclopentadienyl catalysts substituted with a urea moiety, which are able to accelerate the C−H olefination of benzoic acid derivatives, is reported. Through kinetic studies and NMR titration experiments, the catalysts’ substrate recognition ability mediated by hydrogen bonding was identified to be the reason for this effect. Introduction of pyridone‐phosphine ligands capable of forming additional H‐bond interactions increased the catalytic performance even further. By unveiling a proportionality between reaction rate and relative complex formation enthalpy the hypothesis of a supramolecular catalyst preformation was supported. Its application to a variety of substrates proved the catalyst system's advantages, generally increasing the yields when compared to the results obtained with widely used [RhCp*Cl2]2.

Abstract
A three-component reaction from readily available low-cost materials of benzoic acids, formaldehyde, and malonates for the preparation of indanones by rhodium catalysis is reported. The annulation is initiated by an ortho-hydroarylation of benzoic acids, and a Lewis acid is not required. The solvent has a significant influence to the reaction, and 2-substituted or nonsubstituted indanones are obtained by the change of solvent.

Abstract
Phthalides and α,β-butenolides are two related classes of oxygenated heterocycles with a wide range of biological activities. An innovative strategy to prepare these compounds is based on C-H bond functionalization reactions, in which two simple, unfunctionalized molecules are coupled together with cleavage of a C-H bond and formation of a C-X bond (X=C or heteroatom). This paper reviews the methods for the synthesis of phthalides and α,β-butenolides by C-H bond functionalization from non-halogenated starting materials. Over 30 methods are reported, mostly developed during the past ten years.

Abstract
Background: Phthalides are privileged constituents of numerous pharmaceuticals, natural products and agrochemicals and exhibit several biological and therapeutic activities. Therefore, the development of new, facile, and sustainable strategies for the construction of these moieties is highly desired. Results: A broad substrate scope for β-keto acids was found to be strongly compatible with this catalytic process, affording a wide variety of 3-substituted phthalides in good to excellent yields. Conclusion: A concise and efficient synthesis strategy of 3-substituted phthalides from 2-formylbenzoic acid and β-keto acids via a catalytic one-pot cascade reaction in glycerol has been accomplished.
