CuBr2 /TBHP-Promoted Selective Dibromination and Bromohydroxylation of (Diphenylphosphoryl)allenes

Divergent Reactivity of Phosphorylated and Related Allenes: [4 + 2] Cycloaddition with 3,6-Diphenyltetrazine, Self-Addition Leading to Dimers and [Pd]-Complex Formation

Phosphorus-based naphthalenes are formed by self-dimerization-cum-cyclization of α-aryl allenylphosphonates or allenylphosphine oxides using catalytic Pd(OAc)₂in the presence of PPh₃ and Et₃N . This reaction involves [4 + 2]-cycloaddition with the (β,γ) double bond of one allene as the dienophile; the double bonds at the α-aryl-(β',γ') group and (α,β)-carbons of the second allene act as the diene part. A subsequent proton shift also takes place. Upon treating allenylphosphine oxides with Pd(OAc)₂ [stoichiometry 2:1] in the presence of PPh₃/Ag₂CO₃, a [Pd]-complex is isolated and structurally characterized. This complex can be used as a catalyst for C-C bond-forming reactions of phosphorus-based allenes with 2-iodophenol. Densely substituted 3,6-diphenylpyridazines are conveniently obtained in excellent yields by a thermally induced regioselective Inverse Electron Demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of allenes with 3,6-diphenyltetrazine, followed by a [1,3]-H shift.

Synthesis of 5-aminolevulinic acid with nontoxic regents and renewable methyl levulinate

Synthesis of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) was presented with novel bromination of biobased methyl levulinate (ML), followed by ammoniation and hydrolysis. Copper bromide (CuBr₂) was employed as the bromination reagent with higher selectivity and activity instead of the conventional liquid bromine (Br₂). 5-ALA was obtained in a high yield (64%) and purity (>95%) by optimum design, which is of great potential in industrialization.

Reactivity of allenylphosphonates/allenylphosphine oxides – some new addition/cycloaddition and cyclization pathways

In this paper, we highlight some addition/cycloaddition reactions of allenylphosphonates and allenylphosphine oxides, mostly based on the work done in our laboratory. Thus the electrophilic addition of iodine monochloride (ICl) with allenylphosphine oxides affords cyclic phosphonium salts rather than γ-chloro-β-iodovinylphosphine oxides (NMR, HRMS, X-ray) that exhibit rather unusual downfield shifts in the 31P NMR spectra. These compounds undergo hydrolysis to afford γ-hydroxy-β-iodovinylphosphine oxides; the hydroxymethyl group in these compounds can be oxidized by Dess-Martin periodinane to afford the corresponding aldehyde-substituted vinylphosphine oxides. A [2+2] cycloaddition product of an allenylphosphonate has also been structurally characterized. Other reactions that are highlighted include those leading to (Z)/(E)-β-aminovinylphosphonates, β-ketophosphonates (and their utility in Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction), indolyl/furanyl/isocoumaranyl/naphthyl phosphine oxides, thiophosphorylated phosphonates and azo-substituted coumarin phosphonates.

Highly functionalised (γ-azido/γ-fluoro-β-iodo/)vinyl derivatives from phosphorus based allenes or allenoates: I⋯O halogen bonding interactions

γ-Azido/γ-fluoro-β-iodo-vinyl phosphine oxides/phosphonates/esters/sulphone and a γ-diodoallene were synthesised from phosphorus-based allenes or allenoates or a sulphur based allene; in many cases, I⋯O halogen bonding is observed in the solid state.
