Abstract
The ability to control the catalytic activity of enzymes in chemical transformations is essential for the design and development of artificial catalysts. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of functional ligands featuring two 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane units linked by an azobenzene group and their corresponding dinuclear Zn(II) complexes. We show that the configuration switching (E/Z) of the azobenzene spacer in the ligands and their dinuclear Zn(II) complexes is reversibly controlled by irradiation with UV and visible light. The Zn(II)-metal complexes are light-responsive catalysts for the hydrolytic cleavage of nerve agent simulants, i.e., p-nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphate and methyl paraoxon. The catalytic activity of the Z-isomers of the dinuclear Zn(II) complexes outperformed that of the E-counterparts. Moreover, combining the less active E-isomers with gold nanoparticles induced an enhancement in the hydrolysis rate of p-nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphate. Kinetic analysis has shown that the catalytic site appears to involve a single metal ion. We explain our results by considering the different desolvation effects occurring in the catalyst's configurations in the solution and the catalytic systems involving gold nanoparticles.

Abstract
Ion receptors are molecular hosts that bind ionic guests, often with great selectivity. The interplay of solvation and ion binding in anion host-guest complexes in solution governs the binding efficiency and selectivity of such ion receptors. To gain molecular-level insight into the intrinsic binding properties of octamethyl calix[4]pyrrole (omC4P) host molecules with halide guest ions, we performed cryogenic ion vibrational spectroscopy (CIVS) of omC4P in complexes with fluoride, chloride, and bromide ions. We interpret the spectra using density functional theory, describing the infrared spectra of these complexes with both harmonic and anharmonic second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) calculations. The NH stretching modes of the pyrrole moieties serve as sensitive probes of the ion binding properties, as their frequencies encode the ion-receptor interactions. While scaled harmonic spectra reproduce the experimental NH stretching modes of the chloride and bromide complexes in broad strokes, the high proton affinity of fluoride introduces strong anharmonic effects. As a result, the spectrum of F-·omC4P is not even qualitatively captured by harmonic calculations, but it is recovered very well by VPT2 calculations. In addition, the VPT2 calculations recover the intricate coupling of the NH stretching modes with overtones and combination bands of CH stretching and NH bending modes and with low-frequency vibrations of the omC4P macrocycle, which are apparent for all of the halide ion complexes investigated here. A comparison of the CIVS spectra with infrared spectra of solutions of the same ion-receptor complexes in d3-acetonitrile and d6-acetone shows how ion solvation changes the ion-receptor interactions for the different halide ions.

Abstract
A calix[3]carbazole-based cavitand was conveniently synthesized. It was found that the cavitand with adjustable conformation could show excellent complexation with fullerenes C60 and C70 in both solution and the solid state. Moreover, the crystal structures of the host-guest complexes show that the cavitand can stack into channel-like architectures, in which fullerenes are orderly arranged inside.

Aryl- and Superaryl-Extended Calix[4]pyrroles: From Syntheses to Potential Applications. Top Curr Chem (Cham) 2023; 381:7. Abstract
The incorporation of aryl substituents at the meso-positions of calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) scaffolds produces aryl-extended (AE) and super-aryl-extended (SAE) calix[4]pyrroles. The cone conformation of the all-α isomers of "multi-wall" AE-C4Ps and SAE-C4Ps displays deep aromatic clefts or cavities. In particular, "four-wall" receptors feature an aromatic polar cavity closed at one end with four convergent pyrrole rings and fully open at the opposite end. This makes AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds effective receptors for the molecular recognition of negatively charged ions and neutral guest molecules with donor-acceptor and hydrogen bonding motifs. In addition, adequately functionalized all-α isomers of multi wall AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds self-assemble into uni-molecular and supra-molecular aggregates displaying capsular and cage-like structures. The self-assembly process requires the presence of template ions or molecules that lock the C4P cone conformation and complementing the inner polar functions and volumes of their cavities. We envisioned performing an in-depth revision of AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds owing to their importance in different domains such as supramolecular chemistry, biology, material sciences and pharmaceutical chemistry. Herewith, besides the synthetic details on the elaboration of their structures, we also draw attention to their diverse applications. The organization of this review is mainly based on the number of "walls" present in the AE-C4P derivatives and their structural modifications. The sections are further divided based on the C4P functions and applications. The authors are convinced that this review will be of interest to researchers working in the general area of supramolecular chemistry as well as those involved in the study of the binding properties and applications of C4P derivatives.

Abstract
We report the self-assembly of shape-persistent [1 + 1] tetra-imine cages 1 based on two different tetra-α aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole scaffolds in chlorinated solvents and in a 9 : 1 CDCl3 : CD3CN solvent mixture. We show that the use of a bis-N-oxide 4 (4,4'-dipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide) as template is not mandatory to induce the emergence of the cages but has a positive effect on the reaction yield. We use 1H NMR spectroscopy to investigate and characterize the binding properties (kinetic and thermodynamic) of the self-assembled tetra-imine cages 1 with pyridine N-oxide derivatives. The cages form kinetically and thermodynamically stable inclusion complexes with the N-oxides. For the bis-N-oxide 4, we observe the exclusive formation of 1 : 1 complexes independently of the solvent used. In contrast, the pyridine-N-oxide 5 (mono-topic guest) produces inclusion complexes displaying solvent dependent stoichiometry. The bis-N-oxide 4 is too short to bridge the gap between the two endohedral polar binding sites of 1 by establishing eight ideal hydrogen bonding interactions. Nevertheless, the bimolecular 4⊂1 complex results as energetically favored compared to the 52⊂1 ternary counterpart. The inclusion of the N-oxides, 4 and 5, in the tetra-imine cages 1 is significantly faster in chlorinated solvents (minutes) than in the 9 : 1 CDCl3 : CD3CN solvent mixture (hours). We provide an explanation for the similar energy barriers calculated for the formation of the 4⊂1 complex using the two different ternary counterparts 52⊂1 and (CD3CN)2⊂1 as precursors. We propose a mechanism for the in-out guest exchange processes experienced by the tetra-imine cages 1.

Abstract
Deep cavitands, concave molecular containers, represent an important supramolecular host class that has been explored for a variety of applications ranging from sensing, switching, purification and adsorption to catalysis. A major limitation in the field has been the cavitand volume that is restricted by the size of the structural platform utilized (diameter approx. 7 Å). We here report the synthesis of a novel, unprecedentedly large structural platform, named acridane[4]arene (diameter approx. 14 Å), suitable for the construction of cavitands with volumes of up to 814 Å3 . These megalo-cavitands serve as size-selective hosts for fullerenes with mM to sub-μM binding affinity for C60 and C70 . Furthermore, the selective binding of fullerene C70 in the presence of C60 was demonstrated.

Abstract
We report an expanded "Texas-sized" molecular box (AzoTxSB) that incorporates photoresponsive azobenzene bridging subunits and anion recognition motifs. The shape of this box can be switched through light induced E ↔ Z photoisomerization of the constituent azobenzenes. This allows various anionic substrates to be bound and released by using different forms of the box. Control can also be achieved using other environmental stimuli, such as pH and anion competition.

Abstract
We disclose the results of our investigations on the influence that the insertion method of aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole into liposomal membranes exerts on their properties as anion carriers. We use the standard HPTS assay to assess the transport properties of the carriers. We show that the post-insertion of the carrier, as DMSO solution, assigns better transport activities to the "two-wall" α,α-aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole 1 compared to the "four-wall" α,α,α,α-counterpart 2. Notably, opposite results were obtained when the carriers were pre-inserted into the liposomal membranes. We assign this difference to an improved incorporation of carrier 2 into the membrane when delivered by the pre-insertion method. On the other hand, carrier 1 shows comparable levels of transport independently of the method used for its incorporation. Thus, an accurate comparison of the chloride transport activities featured by these two carriers demands their pre-incorporation in the liposomal membranes. In contrast, using the lucigenin assay with the pre-insertion method both carriers displayed similar transport efficiencies.

Abstract
The core N-H units of planar porphyrins are often inaccessible to forming hydrogen-bonding complexes with acceptor molecules. This is due to the fact that the amine moieties are "shielded" by the macrocyclic system, impeding the formation of intermolecular H-bonds. However, methods exist to modulate the tetrapyrrole conformations and to reshape the vector of N-H orientation outwards, thus increasing their availability and reactivity. Strategies include the use of porpho(di)methenes and phlorins (calixphyrins), as well as saddle-distorted porphyrins. The former form cavities due to interruption of the aromatic system. The latter are highly basic systems and capable of binding anions and neutral molecules via N-H⋅⋅⋅X-type H-bonds. This Review discusses the role of porphyrin(oid) ligands in various coordination-type complexes, means to access the core for hydrogen bonding, the concept of conformational control, and emerging applications, such as organocatalysis and sensors.
