Regioselectivity of Radical Addition of Thiols to 1-Alkenes

(Meth)acrylate-Free Three-Dimensional Printing of Bio-Derived Photocurable Resins with Terpene- and Itaconic Acid-Derived Poly(ester-thioether)s

Vat photopolymerization, a very efficient and precise object manufacturing technique, still strongly relies on the use of acrylate- and methacrylate-based formulations because of their low cost and high reactivity. However, the environmental impact of using fossil fuel-based, volatile, and toxic (meth)acrylic acid derivatives is driving the scientific community toward the development of alternatives that can match the mechanical performance and three-dimensional (3D) printing processability of traditional photocurable mixtures but are made from environmentally friendly building blocks. Herein, itaconic acid is polymerized with polyols derived from naturally occurring terpenes to produce photocurable poly(ester-thioether)s. The formulation of such polymers using itaconic acid-based reactive diluents allows the preparation of a series of (meth)acrylate-free photocurable resins, which can be 3D printed into solid objects. Extensive analysis has been conducted on the properties of photocured polymers including their thermal, thermomechanical, and mechanical characteristics. The findings suggest that these materials exhibit properties comparable to those of traditional alternatives that are created using harmful and toxic blends. Notably, the photocured polymers are composed of biobased constituents ranging from 75 to 90 wt %, which is among the highest values ever recorded for vat photopolymerization applications.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Z-Styryl Sulfides from Nucleophilic Addition of Arylacetylenes and Benzyl Thiols

The stereoselective synthesis of Z-anti-Markovnikov styryl sulfides via an anionic thiolate-alkyne addition reaction was achieved when the terminal alkynes and benzyl mercaptans were reacted using tBuOLi (0.5 equiv) in EtOH under ambient conditions. Exclusive stereoselectivity (ca. 100%) was achieved by stereoelectronic control via anti-periplanar and anti-Markovnikov addition of benzylthiolates to phenylacetylenes. Solvolysis of lithium thiolate ion pairs in ethanol significantly suppresses the competing formation of the E-isomer. A remarkable enhancement of the Z-selectivity under a longer reaction time was observed.

Increased CO2/N2 selectivity of PTMSP by surface crosslinking

The surface crosslinking of poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne] (PTMSP) membranes by dithiothreitol under thiol-ene click reaction conditions has yielded membranes having CO₂/N₂ selectivities in excess of 30 with CO₂ permeances in excess of 300 GPU (gas permeation units). The simplicity of this surface crosslinking strategy together with these permeation results suggests that PTMSP that is modified in such ways could lead to useful materials for the separation of CO₂/N₂ from flue gas and for certain other gaseous mixtures.

Catalytic base-controlled regiodivergent heteronucleophilic hydrofunctionalization of β,γ-unsaturated amides

A general catalytic base-controlled regiodivergent nucleophilic hydrofunctionalization of both terminal and internal β,γ-unsaturated amides has been reported. The atom-economical addition of various S/P-based nucleophiles was also exclusively chemoselective. More than 60 branched or linear hetero-substituted aliphatic amides were synthesized from common starting materials under transition-metal-free conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies are consistent with our proposed divergent catalytic cycles.

Enabling Directional Sequence-Control via Step-Growth Polymerization of Heterofunctionalized Precision Macromonomers

The synthesis of periodic copolymers with a regularly recurring sequence in one direction along the polymeric backbone is presented, applying a step-growth polymerization of heterofunctionalized precision macromonomers derived from solid phase synthesis (SPS) via photoinduced thiol-ene coupling (TEC). Heterofunctional macromonomers with monomer sequence-control of the AB type present a terminal alkene and a terminal thiol group carrying a photolabile protecting group to avoid uncontrolled polymerization by self-initiation. As protecting group, 3,4-methylenebisoxy-6-nitrobenzyl is attached onto the thiol via its bromide derivative directly on solid support. The protected heterofunctionalized macromonomer is polymerized in a two-step procedure, first cleaving the photolabile group and subsequent polymerization of the macromonomer via TEC, giving a high molecular weight polymer with M ¯ n of 23.8 kDa corresponding to a X ¯ n of 10 with one directional sequence-control due to their consistent head-to-tail linkage.
