Abstract
The direct and selective conversion of a C-H bond into a C-Se bond remains a significant challenge, which is even more intricate with substrates having an innate regioselectivity under several reaction conditions, such as chalcogenophenes. We overrode their selectivity toward selanylation using palladium, copper, and the 2-(methylthio)amide directing group. This chelation-assisted direct selanylation was also suitable for mono and double ortho functionalization of arenes. The mechanistic studies indicate high-valent Pd(IV) species in the catalytic cycle, a reversible C-H activation step, and Cu(II) as a sequestering agent for organoselenide byproducts.

The crucial role of silver(I)-salts as additives in C-H activation reactions: overall analysis of their versatility and applicability. Chem Soc Rev 2023; 52:6359-6378. Abstract
Transition-metal catalyzed C-H activation reactions have been proven to be useful methodologies for the assembly of synthetically meaningful molecules. This approach bears intrinsic peculiarities that are important to be studied and comprehended in order to achieve its best performance. One example is the use of additives for the in situ generation of catalytically active species. This strategy varies according to the type of additive and the nature of the pre-catalyst that is being used. Thus, silver(I)-salts have proven to play an important role, due to the resulting high reactivity derived from the pre-catalysts of the main transition metals used so far. While being powerful and versatile, the use of silver-based additives can raise concerns, since superstoichiometric amounts of silver(I)-salts are typically required. Therefore, it is crucial to first understand the role of silver(I) salts as additives, in order to wisely overcome this barrier and shift towards silver-free systems.

Abstract
Organoselenium compounds are well-known for their unique biological properties, including antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory. They result from the presence of a particular Se-moiety enclosed in a structure that provides physicochemical features necessary for effective drug-target interactions. Looking for a proper drug design that considers the influence of each structural element has to be conducted. In this paper, we have synthesized a series of chiral phenylselenides, possessing an additional N-substituted amide moiety, and evaluated their antioxidant and anticancer potential. The presented derivatives, as a group of enantiomeric and diastereomeric pairs, enabled a thorough investigation of the 3D structure-activity dependence in correlation with the presence of the phenylselanyl group as the potential pharmacophore. The N-indanyl derivatives possessing a cis- and trans-2-hydroxy group were selected as the most promising antioxidants and anticancer agents.

Abstract
Organoselenium compounds are important scaffolds in pharmaceutical molecules. Herein, we report metal-free, electrochemical, highly chemo- and regioselective synthesis of gem-diselenides through the coupling of α-keto sulfoxonium ylides with diselenides. The versatility of the electrochemical manifold enabled the selenylation with ample scope and broad functional group tolerance, as well as setting the stage for modification of complex bioactive molecules. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that the key C-Se bond was constructed using n-Bu4NI as an electrolyte and catalyst through the electrosynthetic protocol. Finally, the desired α-keto gem-diselenides showed excellent antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans, which can be identified as the lead compounds for further exploration.

Abstract
The reactions of direct Csp2-H chalcogenylation and halogenation of N-arylpyrrolidone under the action of PIFA without a directing group and under metal-free conditions were reported in this paper. Diphenyl selenide/sulfur and selenium phenyl halides were used as reaction reagents to obtain chalcogenylated and halogenated N-arylpyrrolidone products, respectively. The mechanistic studies indicated that a radical pathway was likely involved in these reactions. Preliminary antitumor tests showed that these compounds have moderate to potent activities against human acute leukemia cells K562 in vitro, which may be used as lead compounds for subsequent research.

Abstract
A novel and versatile method for peri-C-H selenylation of aromatic compounds bearing ketone groups, including chromones, xanthones, acridinones, quinolinones and naphthoquinones with diselenides under Ru(II) catalysis is presented. Various chromones and diselenides are applicable for this transformation, affording 5-selenyl chromones in a highly regioselective manner in good to excellent yields. This transformation is easy to scale up and the desired products can be further modified. Most importantly, this transformation allows the late-stage selenylation of bioactive compounds. Mechanistic studies show that radicals may be involved in this novel transformation.

Abstract
Synthetic organic chemistry has witnessed a plethora of functionalization and defunctionalization strategies. In this regard, C-H functionalization has been at the forefront due to the multifarious applications in the development of simple to complex molecular architectures and holds a brilliant prospect in drug development and discovery. Despite been explored tremendously by chemists, this functionalization strategy still enjoys the employment of novel metal catalysts as well metal-free organic ligands. Moreover, the switch to photo- and electrochemistry has widened our understanding of the alternative pathways via which a reaction can proceed and these strategies have garnered prominence when applied to C-H activation. Synthetic chemists have been foraging for new directing groups and templates for the selective activation of C-H bonds from a myriad of carbon-hydrogen bonds in aromatic as well as aliphatic systems. As a matter of fact, by varying the templates and directing groups, scientists found the answer to the challenge of distal C-H bond activation which remained an obstacle for a very long time. These templates have been frequently harnessed for selectively activating C-H bonds of natural products, drugs, and macromolecules decorated with multiple C-H bonds. This itself was a challenge before the commencement of this field as functionalization of a site other than the targeted site could modify and hamper the biological activity of the pharmacophore. Total synthesis and pharmacophore development often faces the difficulty of superfluous reaction steps towards selective functionalization. This obstacle has been solved by late-stage functionalization simply by harnessing C-H bond activation. Moreover, green chemistry and metal-free reaction conditions have seen light in the past few decades due to the rising concern about environmental issues. Therefore, metal-free catalysts or the usage of non-toxic metals have been recently showcased in a number of elegant works. Also, research groups across the world are developing rational strategies for directing group free or non-directed protocols that are just guided by ligands. This review encapsulates the research works pertinent to C-H bond activation and discusses the science devoted to it at the fundamental level. This review gives the readers a broad understanding of how these strategies work, the execution of various metal catalysts, and directing groups. This not only helps a budding scientist towards the commencement of his/her research but also helps a matured mind searching out for selective functionalization. A detailed picture of this field and its progress with time has been portrayed in lucid scientific language with a motive to inculcate and educate scientific minds about this beautiful strategy with an overview of the most relevant and significant works of this era. The unique trait of this review is the detailed description and classification of various directing groups and their utility over a wide substrate scope. This allows an experimental chemist to understand the applicability of this domain and employ it over any targeted substrate.

Abstract
The ability of organoselenium molecules to mimic the activity of the antioxidant selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) allows for their use as antioxidant or prooxidant modulators in several diseases associated with the disruption of the cell redox homeostasis. Current drug design in the field is partially based on specific modifications of the known Se-therapeutics aimed at achieving more selective bioactivity towards particular drug targets, accompanied by low toxicity as the therapeutic window for organoselenium compounds tends to be very narrow. Herein, we present a new group of Se-based antioxidants, structurally derived from the well-known group of GPx mimics—benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones. A series of N-substituted unsymmetrical phenylselenides with an o-amido function has been obtained by a newly developed procedure: a copper-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution by a Se-reagent formed in situ from diphenyl diselenide and sodium borohydride. All derivatives were tested as antioxidants and anticancer agents towards breast (MCF-7) and leukemia (HL-60) cancer cell lines. The highest H2O2-scavenging potential was observed for N-(3-methylbutyl)-2-(phenylselanyl)benzamide. The best antiproliferative activity was found for (−)-N-(1S,2R,4R)-menthyl-2-(phenylselanyl)benzamide (HL-60) and ((−)-N-(1S,2R,3S,6R)-(2-caranyl))benzamide (MCF-7). The structure–activity correlations, including the differences in reactivity of the obtained phenyl selenides and corresponding benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones, were performed.

Abstract
An unprecedented arylselenylation of aryl halides with trifluoromethyl aryl selenonium ylides in the presence of copper is described. The reaction proceeded at 100-140 °C under ligand- and additive-free conditions for 3-20 h to form a variety of unsymmetrical diaryl selenides in good to high yields. Arylselenylation is easy to operate, has good functional group tolerance, and demonstrates the different reaction profiles of trifluoromethyl aryl selenonium ylides from the homologous trifluoromethyl aryl sulfonium ylides.

Abstract
Benzidine was found to be a novel transient directing group to enable Pd-catalyzed direct selenylation of inert C(sp2)-H bonds of benzaldehydes. Diverse diarylselenides were readily constructed in high efficiency and satisfactory yields with good functional group tolerance. The practical usage of the method was further demonstrated by enlarged reaction to gram scale and application in the facile access to two selenoxanthenes and one fluorescent probe.

Abstract
Transition metal catalysed C-H functionalization has reached an exciting level of sophistication, and, today, it represents a paradigm shift from the standard logic of synthetic chemistry. The direct conversion of C-H bonds into C-heteroatoms remains, however, a critical challenge. Nowadays, there is a great demand in general synthetic chemistry in, for example, the materials science for the development of straightforward C-Se bond formation, in order to fulfil the practical requirements. In this sense, this review summarizes recent outstanding advances in the C-Se bond formation through transition metal-catalysed direct selanylation, providing new insights into their mechanistic aspects and disclosing effective synthetic routes with high atom economy. In addition, this review intends to show the growing opportunities to construct complex chemical scaffolds containing selenium atoms.
