Synthetic Approaches to Fluoroalkyltelluryl‐Substituted Compounds

Evidence for and evaluation of fluorine-tellurium chalcogen bonding

In the field of noncovalent interactions, chalcogen bonding (ChB) involving the tellurium atom is currently attracting much attention in supramolecular chemistry and in catalysis. However, as a prerequisite for its application, the ChB should be studied in solution to assess its formation and, if possible, to evaluate its strength. In this context, new tellurium derivatives bearing CH2F and CF3 groups were designed to exhibit Te⋯F ChB and were synthesized in good to high yields. In both types of compounds, Te⋯F interactions were characterized in solution by combining 19F, 125Te and HOESY NMR techniques. These Te⋯F ChBs were shown to contribute to the overall JTe-F coupling constants (94-170 Hz) measured in the CH2F- and CF3-based tellurium derivatives. Finally, a variable temperature NMR study allowed us to approximate the energy of the Te⋯F ChB, from 3 kJ mol-1 for the compounds with weak Te σ-holes to 11 kJ mol-1 for Te σ-holes activated by the presence of strong electron withdrawing substituents.

Air-stable aryl derivatives of pentafluoroorthotellurate

We report on two different sets of air-stable derivatives of pentafluoroorthotellurate containing fluorinated and non-fluorinated aryl groups. The acid cis-PhTeF₄OH was obtained in gram scale and further transformed to Ag[cis-PhTeF₄O], which was used as a cis-PhTeF₄O transfer reagent to obtain [PPh₄][cis-PhTeF₄O]. Furthermore, the synthesis of trans-(C₆F₅)₂TeF₃OH was achieved by a selective hydrolysis of trans-(C₆F₅)₂TeF₄ in the presence of KF and subsequent protonation by aHF. Quantum-chemical calculations show a higher acidity and robustness against fluoride abstraction for trans-(C₆F₅)₂TeF₃OH compared to cis-PhTeF₄OH.

The synthesis of air-stable aryl derivatives of OTeF₅ has been achieved through the use of convenient procedures. Pentafluorophenyl derivatives are stronger acids and more robust against electrophiles in comparison to phenyl analogues.

Study of a Stable "Trifluoromethoxide Anion Solution" Arising from 2,4-Dinitro-Trifluoromethoxybenzene

Despite recent advances, trifluoromethoxylation remains a challenging reaction. Here we describe an efficient trifluoromethoxylative substitution, using an inexpensive and easy-to-handle reagent. By mixing DMAP with a slight excess of 1,4-dinitro-trifluoromethoxybenzene (DNTFB), a stable solution of trifluoromethoxide anion is obtained and can be used to perform a S_N 2 reaction without any silver additives. A precise study of the properties and behavior of this unusual stable solution of CF₃ O^- species is also performed.
