Abstract
In recent years, pollution caused by disinfection by-products (DBPs) has become a global concern. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, and the mechanism of their generation was unclear; however, the number of contaminants has increased exponentially as a result of rapid industrialization and numerous economic activities (e.q., during the outbreak of COVID-19 a surge in the use of chlorinated disinfectants was observed). DBP toxicity results in various adverse health effects and organ failure in humans. In addition, it profoundly affects other forms of life, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. This review comprehensively discusses the pre-treatment methods of traditional and emerging DBPs and the technologies applied for their detection. Additionally, this paper provides a detailed discussion of the principles, applicability, and characteristics of traditional large-scale instrumentation methods (such as gas/liquid/ion chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) for detecting DBPs based on their respective detection techniques. At the same time, the design, functionality, classification, and characteristics of rapid detection technologies (such as biosensors) are also detailed and analyzed.

Abstract
Black phosphorene quantum dots (BPQDs) were prepared by ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation and centrifugation with morphologies proved by TEM results. Furthermore, an electrochemical enzyme sensor was prepared by co-modification of BPQDs with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on the surface of a carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE) for the first time. The direct electrochemical behavior of HRP was studied with a pair of well-shaped voltammetric peaks that appeared, indicating that the existence of BPQDs was beneficial to accelerate the electron transfer rate between HRP and the electrode surface. This was due to the excellent properties of BPQDs, such as small particle size, high interfacial reaction activity, fast conductivity, and good biocompatibility. The presence of BPQDs on the electrode surface provided a fast channel for direct electron transfer of HRP. Therefore, the constructed electrochemical HRP biosensor was firstly used to investigate the electrocatalytic behavior of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and potassium bromate (KBrO3), and the wide linear detection ranges of TCA and KBrO3 were 4.0-600.0 mmol/L and 2.0-57.0 mmol/L, respectively. The modified electrode was applied to the actual samples detection with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., pesticides, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, water hardeners, disinfectant, and other emergent contaminants (phenol, estrogen, gallic acid etc.). We focus on the influence of surface modification of the working electrodes by carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanostructures, imprinted polymers and evaluate the corresponding sensing performance. Especially for pesticides, which are challenging and need special care, we highlight biosensors, such as enzymatic sensors, immunobiosensor, aptasensors, and biomimetic sensors. We discuss the sensors' overall performance, especially concerning real-sample performance and the capability for actual field application.

Abstract
Rapid and accurate determination of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) has become an emerging need for environmental monitoring and has yet to be realized in electrochemical sensors with metal organic framework (MOF)-based materials. In this study, a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) detection based on iron(II) phthalocyanine (PcFe) and a Zn-based metal organic framework (ZIF-8) composite is fabricated. As an electrode material, ZIF-8 possesses a large surface area and porous structure, which exhibits high absorbability; meanwhile, PcFe (II), as the sensing element, undergoes a reduction process from PcFe (II) to PcFe (I) during the sensing process. In the presence of TCAA, PcFe (I) is reoxidized by TCAA, which shifts the reaction equilibrium and accelerates the electron transfer on the electrode interface. By analyzing the reduction current of PcFe (II), the quantitative detection of TCAA is realized. The sensor shows a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.89 nM, which is superior to other reported TCAA sensors, as well as a high sensitivity (826 μΑ/μM). Moreover, the good selectivity and stability of this sensing platform demonstrate its capability and promise in determination of trace DBPs. The reported sensor provides a new strategy for electrochemical detection of DBPs and could expand the applications of MOFs in emerging technologies for monitoring contaminants.

Abstract
Irreversible organ damage or even death frequently occurs when humans or animals unknowingly drink contaminated water. Therefore, in many countries drinking water is disinfected to ensure removal of harmful pathogens from drinking water. If upstream water treatment prior to disinfection is not adequate, disinfection byproducts (DBPs) can be formed. DBPs can exist as wide variety of compounds, but up until now, only several typical compounds have drinking water standards attributed to them. However, it is apparent that the range of DBPs present in water can comprise hundreds of compounds, some of which are at high enough concentrations to be toxic or potentially carcinogenic. Hence, it becomes increasingly significant and urgent to develop an accessible, affordable, and durable sensing platform for a broader range and more sensitive detection of DBPs. Compared with well-established laboratory detection techniques, electrochemical sensing has been identified as a promising alternative that will provide rapid, affordable, and sensitive DBP monitoring in remote water sources. Therefore, this Review covers current state-of-the-art development (within the past decade) in electrochemical sensing to detect organic DBPs in water, which covered three major aspects: (1) recognition mechanism, (2) electrodes with signal amplification, and (3) signal read-out techniques. Moreover, comprehensive quality assessments on electrochemical biosensors, including linear detection range, limit of detection (LoD) and recovery, have also been summarized.

Abstract
A highly conductive thin film composite based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and malic acid (MA) was deposited on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the selective and sensitive electrochemical sensing of trichloroacetic acid (TCA). The casting solution containing MA functionalized AgNPs was employed as a precursor for the thermal deposition of the AgNPs integrated MA thin film composite onto the GCE surface. The uniform coverage of AgNPs within the thin film composite at GCE was obtained by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A significantly high charge transfer resistance of the modified electrode (85.7 Ω for AgNPs-MA/GCE in 2 mM [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- at a bias of +0.235 V as compared to bare GCE (38.01 Ω) verified the optimum coating of AgNPs-MA composite at the surface of the electrode. The AgNPs-MA composite deposited GCE revealed substantial electrocatalytic activity toward TCA reduction with significantly enhanced reduction current. The novel electrode manifested a linear square wave voltammetric (SWV) response over the concentration ranges of 0.1-2 (R2 = 0.9953) and 4-100 μM (R2 = 0.9969) with a limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 30 nM and 92.5 nM, respectively. The modified electrode exhibited an excellent long-term stability (30 days) with the retention of >95% of initial current. The selectivity of the proposed electrode for the determination of TCA was examined in the presence of dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and monochloroacetic acid (MCA) with the retention of high recovery percentages.
