Performance of Amperometric Platinized-Nafion Based Gas Phase Sensor for Determining Nitric Oxide (NO) Levels in Exhaled Human Nasal Breath

Humidity-Resistive Optical NO Gas Sensor Devices Based on Cobalt Tetraphenylporphyrin Dispersed in Hydrophobic Polymer Matrix

We report on an optical nitrogen oxide (NO) gas sensor device using cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP) dispersed in three kinds of hydrophobic polymer film matrix (polystyrene (PSt), ethylcellulose (EC), and polycyclohexyl methacrylate (PCHMA)) to improve humidity resistance. Our approach is very effective because it allows us to achieve not only high humidity resistance, but also a more than sixfold increase in sensitivity compared with CoTPP film due to the high dispersion of CoTPP in the polymer film. The limit of detection was calculated as 33 ppb for the CoTPP-dispersed EC film, which is lower than that of CoTPP film (92 ppb).

Comparison of electrochemical nitric oxide detection methods with chemiluminescence for measuring nitrite concentration in food samples

Nitrite is a naturally occurring species present in various food samples and also present in our bodies as a product of nitric oxide (NO) oxidation. Considering the ubiquity of nitrite, its determination is of great importance in both biological and food samples. Herein, a very facile indirect method of nitrite determination in meat samples via selective reduction to nitric oxide (NO) is presented. The resulting gaseous product is quantified via portable and cost-effective electrochemical sensors. Both a novel laboratory prepared Pt-Nafion based NO sensor and a commercially available amperometric NO sensor are compared. Excellent correlations between the nitrite amount found in tested samples using both of the electrochemical sensors and a reference chemiluminescence method are demonstrated (r = 0.997 and r = 0.999 for Pt-Nafion based and commercially available NO-B4 electrochemical sensors, respectively, n = 12). Moreover, the slope of the linear regression curves are very close to unity for the comparison of the three systems tested. The amperometric sensors compared within this work exhibit good precision and accuracy and are shown to be an attractive alternative to the costly chemiluminescence detection method for accurately determining nitrite levels in food samples.

Selectivity enhancement of amperometric nitric oxide detection via shape-controlled electrodeposition of platinum nanostructures

Nitric oxide (NO) is a biologically multifunctional gaseous signaling molecule. For electrochemical NO detections, complex membranes are commonly adopted to acquire the selectivity for NO over other oxidizable biological species. In this study, we demonstrate the improved selectivity in amperometric NO measurements at nanostructured Pt. The Pt layers were electrodeposited on Au substrate electrodes at a constant potential (-0.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl) with a constant deposition charge (0.08 C). The various distinctive nanostructures of Pt deposits were obtained via either changing the precursor concentrations (from 5 to 75 mM K2PtCl4) or using a different precursor (75 mM H2PtCl6). With a higher K2PtCl4 concentration, the Pt deposition became less sharp and the smoothest Pt was deposited with 75 mM H2PtCl6. The most greatly sharp-pointed nanostructures were generated with the lowest precursor concentration (5 mM K2PtCl4) and exhibited the highest sensitivity, which was attributed to the hydrophobic property of sharply nanostructured Pt. A hydrophobic neutral gas molecule, NO, possibly has a more favorable access to the inner surface of more hydrophobic Pt deposition and eventually increases the oxidation current. NO current sensitivity was enhanced at the more hydrophobic Pt surface, whereas the oxidation currents of acetaminophen, l-ascorbic acid, nitrite and hydrogen peroxide, four oxidizable biological interfering species, were independent of the Pt nanostructure. Conclusively, the enhanced amperometric selectivity to NO was achieved by the simple electrodeposition method without any additional membranes.
