Potassium Concentration Alters Calibration Sensitivities of Dopamine but not Serotonin

Carbon composite thermoplastic electrodes integrated with mini-printed circuit board for wireless detection of calcium ions

Here, a smartphone-based portable sensing system is developed for real-time detection of Ca²⁺ ions in a variety of biofluids. A solid-contact calcium-selective electrode (Ca²⁺-ISE) consisting of an ion-selective membrane (ISM), carbon black nanomaterial and polystyrene-graphite nanoplatelets as a solid contact was fabricated. The polyvinylchloride (PVC)-based ISM was optimized using different plasticizers and ion-exchangers. Under optimized conditions, the solid contacts were electrochemically characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), chronopotentiometric and potentiometric measurements. The Ca²⁺-ISE showed a Nernst response with a slope of 31.2 ± 0.6 mV/decade in the concentration range from 0.1 M to 10^-4 M Ca²⁺ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 × 10^-5 M. In addition, the ISEs exhibited good selectivity to Ca²⁺ ions over various interfering electrolytes and metabolites. The Ca²⁺-ISEs were applied in human urine and, artificial serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples. The ISEs showed good recoveries between 90 and 105%, indicating potential applicability of these electrodes in biological fluids. The portable lab-made potentiometer provides wireless data signaling and transmission to a smartphone and final Ca²⁺ concentration display due to its customized software. Therefore, the developed smartphone-based sensing platform offers low cost (< $25), rapid, user-friendly detection of Ca²⁺ especially in resource-limited areas.

A flexible and bright surface-enhanced electrochemiluminescence film constructed from efficient aggregation-induced emission luminogens for biomolecular sensing

A bright surface-enhanced electrochemiluminescence film (SEEF) was fabricated from an organic luminogen with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgen) features on flexible substrates. Flexible carbonous substrates including carbon fiber cloth (GCFC) and carbon fiber paper (GCFP) were decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) through electrochemical deposition methods, followed by facilely casting AIEgen solutions. The resulting SEEF had a low driving potential of +0.84 V, and its electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was readily observed by the naked eye. The systematic investigation showed that the bright ECL was associated with the promoted electrochemical oxidation and radiative decay of excited AIEgens enhanced by AuNP deposition. Intriguingly, the ECL intensity of the film was linearly enhanced by increasing AIEgen loadings, which allowed tuning of ECL brightness on demand. Moreover, the SEEF was flexible and immune to folding. The ECL intensity rarely changed even when consecutively folding the film 20 times due to the strong interaction between the AIEgen and substrate. The SEEF was further used to sense biomolecules in aqueous media. The ECL of the film was linearly quenched in the presence of dopamine (DA) in the range of 10^-15-10^-6 M with a record-low limit of detection of 3.16 × 10^-16 M. Furthermore, a simple method based on grayscale analysis of ECL images (GAEI) was used for visual sensing of DA. This work provides a kind of novel bright ECL film, useful for the ultrasensitive monitoring of biomolecules in aqueous media.

Silicon Micropillar Array-Based Wearable Sweat Glucose Sensor

Wearable technologies have great potential in health monitoring and disease diagnostics. As a consequence, interest in the study of wearable sensors has dramatically increased over recent years. Successful translation of this technology from research prototypes to commercial products requires addressing some of the major challenges faced by wearable sensors such as loss of, and damage in, the biological recognition layer of the skin-interfaced sensors. In this work, we propose a solution to this challenge by integrating micropillar array (MPA) surfaces as part of the sensing layer with the aim to protect and prevent the loss of the enzyme layer from mechanical stress while the sensor is worn. The proposed wearable sensing patch is composed of reference, counter, and working electrodes, all made of MPAs and is designed for measuring glucose in sweat. MPA sensing patch has a wide linear range of 50 μM to 1.4 mM, a sensitivity of 4.7 ± 0.8 μA mM^-1, and a limit of detection of 26 ± 5 μM. The glucose sensing patch was tested using human sweat where glucose-level changes were successfully measured before and after meal consumption. The developed patch provides an alternative solution to the problem of the damage to the sensor microenvironment upon wear. But in addition, it also offers a user-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable sweat analysis platform with significant potential in health monitoring applications.

The TDs/aptamer cTnI biosensors based on HCR and Au/Ti3C2-MXene amplification for screening serious patient in COVID-19 pandemic

The accurate assay of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is very important for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), it also can be employed as an effective index for screening serious patients in COVID-19 pandemic before fatal heart injury to reduce the mortality. A ratiometric sensing strategy was proposed based on electrochemiluminescent (ECL) signal of doxorubicin (Dox)-luminol or the electrochemical (EC) signal of methylene blue (MB) vs. referable EC signal of Dox. The bio-recognitive Tro4-aptamer ensures the high specificity of the sensor by affinity binding to catch cTnI, and the tetrahedral DNA (TDs) on Au/Ti₃C₂-MXene built an excellent sensing matrix. An in situ hybrid chain reaction (HCR) amplification greatly improved the sensitivity. The ratiometric sensing responses ECL_Dox-luminol/Current_Dox or Current_MB/Current_Dox linearly regressed to cTnI concentration in the range of 0.1 fM-1 pM or 0.1 fM-500 fM with the limit of detection (LOD) as 0.04 fM or 0.1 fM, respectively. Served as the reference signal, Current_Dox reflected the variation of sensor, it is very effective to ensure the accuracy of detection to obviate the false results. The proposed biosensors show good specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility and stability, have been applied to determine cTnI in real samples with satisfactory results. They are worth looking forward to be used for screening serious patient of COVID-19 to reduce the mortality, especially in mobile cabin hospital.
