Control of EOF in CE by different ways of application of radial electric field

Radial basis function interpolation supplemented lattice Boltzmann method for electroosmotic flows in microchannel

Large gradients of physical variables near the channel walls are characteristic of EOF. The previous numerical simulations of EOFs with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) utilize uniform lattice and are not efficient, especially when the electric double layer (EDL) thickness is significantly smaller than the channel height. The efficient LBM simulation of EOF in microchannel calls for a nonuniform mesh which is dense in the EDL region and sparse in the bulk region. In this article, we formulate a radial basis function (RBF)-based interpolation supplemented LBM (ISLBM) to solve the governing equations of EOF, that is, the Poisson, Nernst-Planck, and Navier-Stokes equations, in a nonuniform mesh system. Unlike the conventional ISLBM, the RBF-ISLBM determines the prestreaming distribution functions by using the local RBF-based interpolation over circular supporting regions and is particularly suitable for nonuniform meshes. The RBF-ISLBM is validated by the EOFs in infinitely long and finitely long microchannels. The results show that the RBF-ISLBM possesses excellent robustness and accuracy. Finally, we use the RBF-ISLBM to simulate the EOFs with the hitherto highest electrokinetic parameter, κa, defined by the ratio of channel height a to EDL thickness κ^-1 , in LBM simulations of EOF.

Wall embedded electrodes to modify electroosmotic flow in silica nanoslits

Electroosmotic flow in a silica slit channel with nonuniform surface charge density is investigated. In nanoconfinement, the electrical double layer occupies a non-negligible fraction of the system. Therefore, modifying the charge density on specific locations on the channel wall surface allows effective manipulation of the electroosmotic flow rates. In the present study, extensive (160 ns) nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to investigate the ability of controlling the electroosmotic flow control in a nanoslit by patterning the surface potential. The mechanism to modify the surface charge consists of a set of charged electrodes embedded within one of the channel walls. The presence of the embedded electrodes results in the redistribution of ions in the electrolyte solution and in the alteration of the electroosmotic flow throughout the nanochannel. Indeed, the results reveal significant changes in the electroosmotic driving force and velocity profiles including local flow reversal. This study provides physical insight into the direct manipulation of the electrokinetic flow in nanoslits.

Flow field effect transistors with polarisable interface for EOF tunable microfluidic separation devices

A method is proposed to control the zeta potential in microchannels using electrically polarisable interfaces in direct contact with the electrolyte. The approach is based on the use of conducting layers exhibiting minimal electrochemical reactions with aqueous electrolytes but a large potential window (typically from -2 V to +2 V) enabling tuning their zeta potential without detrimental faradic reactions. SiC, Al and CN(x) interfaces were deposited on glass surfaces and then integrated into glass-PDMS-glass devices. The effect of the zeta potential control was monitored by measuring the electro-osmotic flow using a microfluidic Wheatstone Bridge. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a one dimensional modeling. The electro-osmotic flow control obtained at high pH values suggests that it should be possible to use such devices as Polarisable Interface Flow-Field Effect Transistors (PI-FFETs) to overcome the difficulties met with conventional metal-isolator-electrolyte systems (MIE-FFETs) for electrokinetic separation applications.

Recent developments in CE and CEC of peptides

The article brings a comprehensive survey of recent developments and applications of high-performance capillary electromigration methods, zone electrophoresis, ITP, IEF, affinity electrophoresis, EKC, and electrochromatography, to analysis, preparation, and physicochemical characterization of peptides. New approaches to the theoretical description and experimental verification of electromigration behavior of peptides and to methodology of their separations, such as sample preparation, adsorption suppression, and detection, are presented. Novel developments in individual CE and CEC modes are shown and several types of their applications to peptide analysis are presented: conventional qualitative and quantitative analysis, purity control, determination in biomatrices, monitoring of chemical and enzymatical reactions and physical changes, amino acid and sequence analysis, and peptide mapping of proteins. Some examples of micropreparative peptide separations are given and capabilities of CE and CEC techniques to provide important physicochemical characteristics of peptides are demonstrated.

Measurement of electroosmotic flow in capillary and microchip electrophoresis

Microfluidics is the science and technology of systems that process or manipulate small amounts of fluids, using channels with dimensions of tens of micrometers. Electroosmotic flow (EOF) is an important characteristic of fluids in microchannels. In this paper, EOF generation, effects on separation and definition of EOF are introduced. And EOF measurement methods on capillary electrophoresis (CE) and microchip CE are systematically reviewed based on detection principle, hallmarks of EOF measurement methods are presented, the devices and signals are also schematically described. This paper offers researchers a guidance to obtain an estimate of EOF mobility in capillary and microchip electrophoresis.
