Complexation of An(vi) with succinic acid in aqueous acid solutions: uranyl vs. plutonyl

Effects of ion pairing on the capillary electrophoretic separation and ultraviolet-absorption detection of quaternary ammonium cations using meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole as the background electrolyte additive

Five quaternary ammonium cations, including tetramethylammonium, tetraethylammonium, hexadecyltrimethylammonium, benzyltrimethylammonium, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, have been separated by capillary electrophoresis. A direct ultraviolet method has been achieved when tetrabutylammonium fluoride was the background electrolyte and meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole was the background electrolyte additive. The ultraviolet spectra of meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole and cation mixtures showed that redshifts can be attributed to the size of cations, and the maximum absorption wavelength shifted from 218 to 230 nm when tetrabutylammonium cation was substituted with tetramethylammonium cation or tetraethylammonium cation. Conductivity measurements were performed to evaluate the ion-pairing effect of tetrabutylammonium fluoride in a mixture of acetonitrile/ethanol (80:20, v/v), and the ion-pairing formation constant, Kip, was calculated (Kip = 14.8 ± 0.3 L/mol) using the Fuoss extended model. Ion pairing also occurs between cations of the analytes and counterion, a fluoride complex of meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole. The tetramethylammonium cations associate more strongly with this counterion than the tetraethylammonium cation that contributes to the change of selectivity in capillary electrophoresis separation. The effective mobilities of the cations with trimethyl groups, such as tetramethylammonium cation, benzyltrimethylammonium cation, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation, decreased faster than others with the increase of meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole concentration, highlighting the fact that the ion-pairing effect played an important role in this method.

Current role of ICP–MS in clinical toxicology and forensic toxicology: a metallic profile

As metal/metalloid exposure is inevitable owing to its omnipresence, it may exert toxicity in humans. Recent advances in metal/metalloid analysis have been made moving from flame atomic absorption spectrometry and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry to the multi-elemental inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques as ICP atomic emission spectrometry and ICP–MS. ICP–MS has now emerged as a major technique in inorganic analytical chemistry owing to its flexibility, high sensitivity and good reproducibility. This in depth review explores the ICP–MS metallic profile in human toxicology. It is now routinely used and of great importance, in clinical toxicology and forensic toxicology to explore biological matrices, specifically whole blood, plasma, urine, hair, nail, biopsy samples and tissues.

Strong anion determination in biological fluids by capillary electrophoresis for clinical diagnostics

New methods for quantitative analysis of strong anions are required for diagnostic testing of human diseases. Current techniques suffer from poor selectivity and/or long analysis times that are not amenable for labile anions in high-saline or volume-restricted samples. We introduce a rapid assay (<5 min) based on capillary electrophoresis (CE) with indirect UV detection for simultaneous analysis of sulfate, sulfite, and chloride in human urine, plasma, and sweat specimens. Remarkable selectivity for strong anions is achieved by using an acidic background electrolyte under reversed polarity that results in electrokinetic rejection of matrix interferences at the capillary inlet. A dual co-ion probe system consisting of 5 mM naphthalene disulfonate (NDS) and 5 mM naphthalene trisulfonate (NTS) in 0.4 M formic acid, pH 2.0 is developed for detection of UV transparent anions (S/N ≈ 3, 60 μM with a 25 μm inner diameter fused-silica capillary) with good peak symmetry and baseline stability. Due to the chemical reactivity of sulfite, dilute formaldehyde is used as a reagent to form an acid-stable hydroxymethylsulfonate adduct. Method validation confirmed excellent linearity (R(2) > 0.999), good accuracy (mean bias ≈7%), and acceptable long-term reproducibility (CV < 10%) over 20 days. The assay allows for artifact-free determination of sulfate and sulfite with consistent results for chloride when compared to standard electrochemical methods (R(2) > 0.975). Preliminary data suggest that kidney-stone formers have lower urinary sulfate excretion relative to non-kidney-stone patient controls (p = 0.0261). CE offers a selective yet robust platform for routine analysis of strong anions that is needed for confirmatory testing of cystic fibrosis, sulfite oxidase deficiency, urolithiasis, and other disorders of sulfur metabolism and/or anion transport.

Contactless impedance sensors and their application to flow measurements

The paper provides a critical discussion of the present state of the theory of high-frequency impedance sensors (now mostly called contactless impedance or conductivity sensors), the principal approaches employed in designing impedance flow-through cells and their operational parameters. In addition to characterization of traditional types of impedance sensors, the article is concerned with the use of less common sensors, such as cells with wire electrodes or planar cells. There is a detailed discussion of the effect of the individual operational parameters (width and shape of the electrodes, detection gap, frequency and amplitude of the input signal) on the response of the detector. The most important problems to be resolved in coupling these devices with flow-through measurements in the liquid phase are also discussed. Examples are given of cell designs for continuous flow and flow-injection analyses and of detection systems for miniaturized liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. New directions for the use of these sensors in molecular biology and chemical reactors and some directions for future development are outlined.
