Graphene nanoparticles as pseudostationary phase for the electrokinetic separation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Carbon Dot-Mediated Capillary Electrophoresis Separations of Metallated and Demetallated Forms of Transferrin Protein

Carbon dots (CDs) are fluorescent nanomaterials used extensively in bioimaging, biosensing and biomedicine. This is due in large part to their biocompatibility, photostability, lower toxicity, and lower cost, compared to inorganic quantum dots or organic dyes. However, little is known about the utility of CDs as separation adjuvants in capillary electrophoresis (CE) separations. CDs were synthesized in-house according to a ‘bottom-up’ method from citric acid or other simple carbon precursors. To demonstrate the applicability of CDs as separation adjuvants, mixtures of holo- (metallated) and apo- (demetallated) forms of transferrin (Tf, an iron transport protein) were analyzed. In the absence of CDs, the proteins were not resolved by a simple CE method; however, upon addition of CDs to the separation buffer, multiple forms of Tf were resolved indicating that CDs are valuable tools to facilitate the separation of analytes by CE. CE parameters including sample preparation, buffer identity, ionic strength, pH, capillary inside diameter, and temperature were optimized. The results suggest that dots synthesized from citric acid provide the best resolution of various different forms of Tf and that CDs are versatile and promising tools to improve current electrophoretic separation methods, especially for metalloprotein analysis.

Polyethylene Glycols for the Dispersion Development of Graphene in an Aqueous Surfactant Solution Studied by Affinity Capillary Electrophoresis

Water-soluble nonionic polymers of polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were examined to develop the dispersion of graphene in an aqueous surfactant solution. Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate was used as an anionic surfactant to disperse graphene in an aqueous solution and to give negative charge on it. The dispersion of graphene was monitored through the electropherograms in affinity capillary electrophoresis; a broad peak for the dispersed graphene and shot signals for the aggregated one. When PEG was added in the separation buffer as an affinity reagent, the number of the shot signals in the electropherogram was reduced; PEG can develop the dispersion of graphene in an aqueous surfactant solution. The dispersion was also developed with PVP or PVA. The effective electrophoretic mobility of the dispersed graphene was reduced by using the polymer as an affinity reagent. The result suggested that the anionic surfactant on the graphene surface was competitively substituted with the nonionic polymer. The degree of the decrease in the effective electrophoretic mobility was larger with PEG with a high-molecular mass. The broad peak of the dispersed graphene got narrower by the addition of PEG, and the number of theoretical plates was improved.

Efficient separation of tanshinones by polyvinylpyrrolidone-stabilized graphene-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography

In this work, a PVP-stabilized graphene was used in MEKC for the separation of tanshinones. Seven structurally similar tanshinones were studied, that is, tanshinone IIB, dihydrotanshinone I, tanshinone I, cryptotanshinone, 1,2-dihydrotanshinone I, miltirone, and tanshinone IIA. To achieve optimal conditions, graphene concentration, sample solvent composition, SDS concentration, 2-propanolconcentration, and buffer pH were investigated. At a separation voltage of 30 kV and a 41.5 cm effective length fused-silica capillary, good resolution within 12 min was performed using 10 mM borate buffer (pH 9.3) containing 30 mM SDS, 10% v/v 2-propanol and 6 μg/mL graphene. The method was validated in terms of linearity (r(2) > 0.9970), intra- and inter-day precision were less than 3.56 and 4.83%, respectively. The proposed method was then successfully applied to Danshentong capsule, an herbal preparation from Salvia miltiorrhiza. Our results indicated the high separation efficiency of PVP-stabilized graphene provided new opportunities for the analysis of complex samples.

Graphene-based materials: fabrication and application for adsorption in analytical chemistry

Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms densely packed into a honeycomb crystal lattice with unique electronic, chemical, and mechanical properties, is the 2D allotrope of carbon. Owing to the remarkable properties, graphene and graphene-based materials are likely to find potential applications as a sorbent in analytical chemistry. The current review focuses predominantly on the recent development of graphene-based materials and demonstrates their enhanced performance in adsorption of organic compounds, metal ions, and solid phase extraction as well as in separation science since mostly 2012.
