Separation and determination of alkyl sulfate surfactants in wastewater by capillary electrophoresis coupled with contactless conductivity detection after preconcentration by simultaneous adsorption using alumina beads

A five-electrode capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector with a low limit of detection

The conductivity detector is a broadly used device that allows for the highly efficient detection of analytes, and continuous efforts have been directed toward lowering the limit of detection. In this study, a five-electrode capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector (TIC⁴D) is proposed, which uses copper mesh between the electrodes for a grounding shield to reduce the interference of stray capacitance and noise. After adding the copper mesh shield, the difference value between the response signal and baseline at low KCl concentration is effectively increased, achieving 33 mV for 10^-9 M KCl solution. Meanwhile, for the unshielded detector, the difference is only 18 mV for the KCl solution at the same concentration. The response signal shows a linear function of the logarithm at the range of 10^-4 M to 10^-5 M KCl solution, and the TIC⁴D detector displays a higher slope (0.8448) than the conventional single-input capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector (C⁴D: 0.5579) and dual-input capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detectors (DIC⁴D: 0.6173). Moreover, two TIC⁴D detectors are combined to achieve a dual-channel six-input differential capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector (SIDC⁴D), reducing the high baseline levels caused by the multi-signal input. By differentially amplifying the output signal, the high baseline levels and noise interference can be effectively reduced. For the 10^-3 M KCl solution, the ratio of the response signal to baseline for SIDC⁴D can reach 8.500, almost 7 times that of TIC⁴D, and a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 3 × 10^-10 M is also achieved. This work may open a new door based on coupled contactless conductivity for detection performance.

Applications of capillary electrophoresis in the fields of environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical and food analysis (2019-2021)

So far, the potential of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in the application fields has been increasingly excavated due to the advantages of simple operation, short analysis time, high-resolution, less sample consumption and low cost. This review examines the implementations and advancements of CE in different application fields (environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical and food analysis) covering the literature from 2019 to 2021. In addition, ultrasmall sample injection volume (nanoliter range) and short optical path lead to relatively low concentration sensitivity of the most frequently used UV-absorption spectrophotometric detection, so the pretreatment technology being developed has been gradually utilized to overcome this problem. Despite the review is focused on the development of CE in the fields of environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical and food analysis, the new sample pretreatment techniques of microextraction and enrichment which fit excellently to CE in recent three years are also described briefly. Systematic Research on the Transport of Ball-Milled Biochar in Saturated Porous Media: Effect of Humic Acid, Ionic Strength, and Cation Types

Ball-milled biochar (BMBC) is a typical engineering material that has promising application prospects in remediating contaminated soil and water. It is fundamental to rate the transport behaviors of BMBC in the underground environment before extensive use. In this study, the effects of the ubiquitous cations (Na⁺, Mg²⁺, and Al³⁺) and model organic matter (humic acid) on the transport of BMBC were investigated using laboratory column experiments. The results demonstrated the facilitated effect of HA on the transport of BMBC due to the negatively charged surface and steric effect under neutral conditions. HA and ionic strength manifested an antagonistic effect on the transport of BMBC, where the presence of one could weaken the effect from the other. We also found the charge reversal of the BMBC surface in the presence of Mg²⁺, thus enhancing the deposition of BMBC onto the medium surface. On the other hand, the charge reversal from Al³⁺-coupled acid conditions led to the restabilization and transport of BMBC in porous media. Therefore, the rational usage of BMBC is indispensable and more attention should be paid to the composition and change in underground water that might facilitate the transport of BMBC and thus lead to negative environmental implications.

Study on Adsorption Characteristics of Sulfonate Gemini Surfactant on Lignite Surface

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of sulfonate gemini surfactants on the surface of lignite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and A kind of sulfonic acid bis sodium salt (S2) and the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were selected. A binary model of surfactant/lignite adsorption system and a ternary model of water/surfactant/lignite system were constructed, and a series of properties such as adsorption configuration, interaction energy, order parameters, relative concentration distribution, number of hydrogen bonds, etc., were analyzed. The results showed that the adsorption strength of S2 on the surface of lignite was higher than that of SDS. The results indicated that the large-angle molecular chain in S2 tended to become smaller, the small-angle molecular chain tended to become larger, and the angle between the molecular chains and the Z axis tended to be concentrated, making the formed network structure denser during the adsorption process. The number of hydrogen bonds in the water-coal system was 42, and the number of hydrogen bonds in the system after S2 adsorption was 15, which was much lower than the 23 hydrogen bonds in the system after SDS adsorption, and S2 could better adsorb and wrap the oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the lignite. The comparative study of the adsorption characteristics of the two surfactants on the surface of lignite can help us better understand the influence of the surfactant structure on the adsorption strength. The research results have important theoretical and practical significance for developing new surfactants, and enriching and developing the basic theory of coal wettability.
