Recent advances in paper-based preconcentrators by utilizing ion concentration polarization

On-Chip Electrochemical Sensing with an Enhanced Detecting Signal Due to Concentration Polarization-Based Analyte Preconcentration

Here, we integrated two key technologies within a microfluidic system, an electrokinetic preconcentration of analytes by ion Concentration Polarization (CP) and local electrochemical sensors to detect the analytes, which can synergistically act to significantly enhance the detection signal. This synergistic combination, offering both decoupled and coupled operation modes for continuous monitoring, was validated by the intensified fluorescent intensities of CP-preconcentrated analytes and the associated enhanced electrochemical response using differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The system performance was evaluated by varying the location of the active electrochemical sensor, target analyte concentrations, and electrolyte concentration using fluorescein molecules as the model analyte and Homovanillic acid (HVA) as the target bioanalyte within both phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and artificial sweat solution. The combination of on-chip electrochemical sensing with CP-based preconcentration renders this generic approach adaptable to various analytes. This advanced system shows remarkable promise for enhancing biosensing detection in practical applications while bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical implementation.

Modulating selective ionic enrichment and depletion zones in straight nanochannels via the interplay of surface charge modulation and electric field mediated fluid-thickening

We report the possibilities of achieving highly controlled segregation of ion-enriched and ion-depleted regions in straight nanochannels. This is achieved via harnessing the interplay of an axial gradient of the induced transverse electric field on account of electrical double layer phenomenon and the localized thickening of the fluid because of intensified electric fields due to the large spatial gradients of the electrical potential in extreme confinements. By considering alternate surface patches of different charge densities over pre-designed axial spans, we illustrate how these effects can be exploited to realize selectively ion-enriched and ion-depleted zones. Physically, this is attributed to setting up of an axial concentration gradient that delves on the ionic advection due to the combined effect of an externally applied electric field and induced back-pressure gradient along the channel axis and electro-migration due to the combinatorial influences of the applied and the induced electrostatic fields. With an explicit handle on the pertinent parameters, our results offer insights on the possible means of imposing delicate controls on the solute-enrichment and depletion phenomena, a paradigm that remained unexplored thus far.

Asymmetric Nanochannel Network-Based Bipolar Ionic Diode for Enhanced Heavy Metal Ion Detection

A higher rectification degree in ionic diodes is required to achieve better performance in applications. Nonetheless, the active geometrical change that is critical for inducing electrical potential asymmetry is difficult to realize in typical ionic diodes because of the intrinsic limitation of the fabrication method. Here, we propose a nanochannel-network-based bipolar diode with a high rectification degree of ∼1600─the highest value realized until now, to the best of our knowledge. Such a high rectification is obtained based on the synergetic effect of the bipolar surface charge and the optimization of the microchannel through experimental studies and multiphysics numerical simulations. It induces ion concentrations at the heterogeneous junction based on the accumulation effect under the forward potential bias. In particular, this proposed molecular concentration occurs in the ohmic region without vortex and instability that is inevitable at the conventional nano-electrokinetic concentration. Combining this accumulation with the horizontally aligned configuration of the nanochannel network membrane (NCNM), a highly sensitive and quantitative mercury ion (Hg²⁺) sensor based on a fluorescent signal is fabricated that allows direct measurement using a general fluorescent microscope. The detection limit of Hg²⁺ is 10 pM, which is ∼10 times lower than the best detection limit realized so far (∼100 pM) in fluorescent dye-based detection. This demonstrates the potential of asymmetric NCNM for high-performance ion transport in applications such as energy conversion, based on its design and material flexibility.
