Biochar amendment to lead-contaminated soil: Effects on fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity and phytotoxicity to rice

The dissipation of organophosphate esters mediated by ryegrass root exudate oxalic acid in soil: Analysis of enzymes activities, microorganism

Complex rhizoremediation is the main mechanism of phytoremediation in organic-contaminated soil. Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in root exudates have been shown to increase the bioavailability of contaminants and are essential for promoting the dissipation of contaminants. The effects of root exudates on the dissipation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in soil are unclear. Consequently, we studied the combined effects of root exudates, soil enzymes and microorganisms on OPEs (tri (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP)) dissipation through pot experiments. Oxalic acid (OA) was confirmed to be the main component of LMWOAs in root exudates of ryegrass. The existence of OA increased the dissipation rate of OPEs by 6.04%-25.50%. Catalase and dehydrogenase activities were firstly activated and then inhibited in soil. While, urease activity was activated and alkaline phosphatase activity was inhibited during the exposure period. More bacteria enrichment (e.g., Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Flavisolibacter, Pontibacter, Methylophilus and Massilia) improved the biodegradation of OPEs. In addition, the transformation paths of OPEs hydrolysis and methylation under the action of root exudates were observed. This study provided theoretical insights into reducing the pollution risk of OPEs in the soil.

Synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cd) on phytoremediation potential of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) in multi-contaminated soil

The environment in India is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the occurrence of large anthropogenic activities, i.e., fuel combustion, mineral roasting, and biomass burning. Hence, 13 toxic PAHs were detected: phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benz(a) anthracene, ben-zo; (b) fluoranthene, benzo(k) fluoranthene, benzo(a) pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, dibenz (ah) anthracene, indeno1,2,3-(cd) pyrene, coronene and coronene in the environment (i.e., ambient particulate matter, road dust, sludge, and sewage) of the most industrialized area. Pollutants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons co-contaminate the soil and pose a significant hazard to the ecosystem because these pollutants are harmful to both humans and the environment. Phytoremediation is an economical plant-based natural approach for soil clean-up that has no negative impact on ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pyrene (500 mg kg-1), Zn (150 mg kg-1), Pb (150 mg kg-1), and Cd (150 mg kg-1) alone and in combination on the phytoextraction efficiency of Medicago sativa growing in contaminated soil. Plant biomass, biochemical activities, translocation factors, accumulation of heavy metals, and pyrene removal were determined. After 60 days of planting, compared with those of the control plants, the growth parameters, biomass, and chlorophyll content of the M. sativa plants were significantly lower, and the reactive oxygen species activity, such as proline and polyphenol content and metallothionein protein content, was markedly greater in the pyrene and heavy metal-polluted soils. Furthermore, the combined toxicity of pyrene and all three metals on M. sativa growth and biochemical parameters was significantly greater than that of pyrene, Zn, Pb, or Cd alone, indicating the synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals on cytotoxicity. Pyrene stress increased Cd accumulation in M. sativa. After pyrene exposure alone or in combination with Zn-pyrene, a greater pyrene removal rate (85.5-81.44%) was observed than that in Pb-pyrene, Cd-pyrene, and Zn-Pb-Cd-pyrene polluted soils (62.78-71.27%), indicating that zinc can enhance the removal of pyrene from contaminated soil. The resulting hypotheses demonstrated that Medicago sativa can be used as a promising phytoremediation agent for co-contaminated soil.

Effect of oxidative aging of biochar on relative distribution of competitive adsorption mechanism of Cd2+ and Pb2

In this study, aged biochar (CCB350 and CCB650) were obtained from pyrolysis of corn stalk biochar (CB350 and CB650) at the degree of 350 °C and 650 °C by artificial oxidation with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Also, the mechanism of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ on fresh and aged biochars was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by batch adsorption experiments combined with characterization. The adsorption isotherm results showed that aging treatment decreased the adsorption capacity of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ and inhibited the competitive adsorption behavior of heavy metals. In the single-metal system, precipitation and cation exchange were considered as the main adsorption mechanisms for CB350 and CB650, with a ratio of 40.07–48.23% and 38.04–57.19%, respectively. Competition between Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ increased the relative contribution of mineral precipitation, but decreased the contribution of cation exchange mechanism. Aging resulted in the rise of the contribution of surface complexation to the adsorption of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ on biochars, especially in low-temperature biochars, but weakened the contribution of mineral precipitation to the adsorption. Further, the contribution of other adsorption mechanisms was significantly enhanced for high-temperature aged biochars. These results are important to evaluate its long-term application prospects in the natural environment.

Variations in Cadmium Concentrations in Rice and Oxidation-Reduction Potential at the Soil Surface with Supplementation of Fermented Botanical Waste-based Amendment in Large-scale Farmland

We monitored the relationship between the cadmium (Cd) concentration uptake of rice and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) at the soil surface with the supplementation of fermented botanical waste-based amendment (FBWA), an organic fertilizer prepared from woody and food wastes. This study was carried out for 3 years in the western part of Jiangsu Province, China. It was found that the Cd concentration taken up by rice was correlated to a decreased the ORP of the cultivated soil. The yield of rice was ∼1.20 times higher than that of the control plot. The effects of reducing the Cd content in rice and increasing the rice yield remained for 2 years after FBWA application. Finally, Cd was immobilized in the soil with adsorption to FBWA or the decomposed products. The ORP measurement during rice cultivation might be a key index to predict the suppression effect of Cd uptake into the rice or limitation of the sustainable effect by the FBWA.

Reduced Cd, Pb, and As accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by a combined amendment of calcium sulfate and ferric oxide

A combined amendment (CF) consisting of 90% calcium sulfate (CaSO₄) and 10% ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃) was used to investigate the feasibility, active principles, and possible mechanisms of the immobilization of heavy metals in paddy soil. A soil incubation experiment, two consecutive pot trials, and a field experiment were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and persistence of CF on metal(loid) immobilization. Soil incubation experiment results indicated that the application of CF significantly decreased the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) in soil solution. CF treatments simultaneously reduced the accumulation of Cd, Pb, and As in two consecutive pot trials. The total Cd, Pb, and As concentrations in the rice grains were respectively 0.02, 2.08, and 0.62 mg kg^-1 in the control treatment in the second year, which exceeded the safety limits of contaminants in food products in China. However, a high amount of CF amendment (CF-H, 0.3%) effectively decreased Cd, Pb, and As by 75.0%, 75.5%, and 46.8%, respectively. Further, with the CF amendment, the bioavailable Cd and Pb in the soil and the accumulation of Cd, Pb, and As in rice grain in the field experiment were also significantly decreased. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, and As in grains were respectively 0.02, 0.03, and 0.39 mg kg^-1 in the control treatment in the field experiment, which decreased to 0.01, 0.01, and 0.22 mg kg^-1 with CF addition, suggesting that grains produced in the field could pose less health risk. In conclusion, these results implied that CF was an effective and persistent combined amendment to immobilize heavy metals in soil and thereby can reduce the exposure risk of metal(loid)s associated with rice consumption.

Adsorption behaviour and mechanisms of cadmium and nickel on rice straw biochars in single- and binary-metal systems

Adsorption mechanisms and competition between Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ for adsorption by rice straw biochars prepared at 400 °C (RB400) and 700 °C (RB700) were investigated in this study. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities (mg g^-1) of Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ on RB400 and RB700 were in the order of Cd²⁺ (37.24 and 65.40) > Ni²⁺ (27.31 and 54.60) in the single-metal adsorption isotherms and Ni²⁺ (25.20 and 32.28) > Cd²⁺ (24.22 and 26.78) in the binary-metal adsorption isotherms. Cd²⁺ competed with Ni²⁺ for binding sites at initial metal concentrations >10 mg L^-1 for RB400 and > 20 mg L^-1 for RB700. The adsorption sites for Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ on the biochars largely overlapped, and the binding of Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ to these sites was affected by the occupation sequence of these metals. For Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ adsorption in the binary system, cation exchange and precipitation were the dominant adsorption mechanisms on RB400 and RB700, respectively, accounting for approximately 36% and 60% of the adsorption capacity. Competition decreased the contribution of cation exchange but increased that of precipitation and other potential mechanisms. Results from this study suggest that types and concentrations of metal ions should be taken into account when removing metal contaminants from water or soil using biochars.

Mechanisms of biochar-mediated alleviation of toxicity of trace elements in plants: a critical review

Trace elements (TEs) contamination is one of the main abiotic stresses which limit plant growth and deteriorate the food quality by their entry into food chain. In recent, biochar (BC) soil amendment has been widely reported for the reduction of TE(s) uptake and toxicity in plants. This review summarizes the role of BC in enhancing TE(s) tolerance in plants. Under TE(s) stress, BC application increased plant growth, biomass, photosynthetic pigments, grain yield, and quality. The key mechanisms evoked are immobilization of TE(s) in the soil, increase in soil pH, alteration of TE(s) redox state in the soil, and improvement in soil physical and biological properties under TE(s) stress. However, these mechanisms vary with plant species, genotypes, growth conditions, duration of stress imposed, BC type, and preparation methods. This review highlights the potential for improving plant resistance to TE(s) stress by BC application and provides a theoretical basis for application of BC in TE(s) contaminated soils worldwide.
