Advanced membrane-based electrode engineering toward efficient and durable water electrolysis and cost-effective seawater electrolysis in membrane electrolyzers

Modulating the Electronic Structure of Cobalt-Vanadium Bimetal Catalysts for High-Stable Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer

Modulating the electronic structure of catalysts to effectively couple the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for developing high-efficiency anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). Herein, a coral-like nanoarray composed of nanosheets through the synergistic layering effect of cobalt and the 1D guiding of vanadium is synthesized, which promotes extensive contact between the active sites and electrolyte. The HER and OER activities can be enhanced by modulating the electronic structure through nitridation and phosphorization, respectively, enhancing the strength of metal-H bond to optimize hydrogen adsorption and facilitating the proton transfer to improve the transformation of oxygen-containing intermediates. Resultantly, the AEMWE achieves a current density of 500 mA cm-2 at 1.76 V for 1000 h in 1.0 M KOH at 70 °C. The energy consumption is 4.21 kWh Nm-3 with the producing hydrogen cost of $0.93 per kg H2. Operando synchrotron radiation and Bode phase angle analyses reveal that during the high-energy consumed OER, the dissolution of vanadium species transforms distorted Co-O octahedral into regular octahedral structures, accompanied by a shortening of the Co-Co bond length. This structural evolution facilitates the formation of oxygen intermediates, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics.

Nickel Hydroxide-Based Electrocatalysts for Promising Electrochemical Oxidation Reactions: Beyond Water Oxidation

Transition metal hydroxides have attracted significant research interest for their energy storage and conversion technique applications. In particular, nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2), with increasing significance, is extensively used in material science and engineering. The past decades have witnessed the flourishing of Ni(OH)2-based materials as efficient electrocatalysts for water oxidation, which is a critical catalytic reaction for sustainable technologies, such as water electrolysis, fuel cells, CO2 reduction, and metal-air batteries. Coupling the electrochemical oxidation of small molecules to replace water oxidation at the anode is confirmed as an effective and promising strategy for realizing the energy-saving production. The physicochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 related to conventional water oxidation are first presented in this review. Then, recent progress based on Ni(OH)2 materials for these promising electrochemical reactions is symmetrically categorized and reviewed. Significant emphasis is placed on establishing the structure-activity relationship and disclosing the reaction mechanism. Emerging material design strategies for novel electrocatalysts are also highlighted. Finally, the existing challenges and future research directions are presented.

Numerical Investigation of the Performance of a Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer under Various Outlet Manifold Structure Conditions

The oxygen discharge process significantly affects the electrochemical performance of a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), which requires an optimal structure of the flow field implemented in the bipolar plate (BP) component. In this study, we numerically investigated the two-phase (liquid water and oxygen) flow in the PEMWE's channel region with different outlet manifold structures utilizing the volume of fluid (VOF) model. Then, the oxygen volume fraction at the liquid/gas diffusion layer (L/GDL) surface, i.e., the interface of the channel and L/GDL, obtained by the liquid water and oxygen flow model was incorporated into a three-dimensional (3D) PEMWE model, which made it possible to predict the influence of the outlet manifold structure on the multiple transfers inside the whole electrolyzer as well as the electrochemical performance. The results indicate that the existence of oxygen in the flow field significantly decreased the electrolyzer voltage at a fixed operation current density and deteriorated the uniform distribution of the oxygen amount, current density (corresponding to the electrochemical reaction rate) and temperature in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), indicating that the rapid oxygen removal from the flow field is preferred in the operation of the electrolyzer. Moreover, slight increases in the width of the outlet manifold were helpful in relieving the oxygen accumulation in the anode CL and, hence, improved the electrolyzer performance with more uniform distribution characteristics.

Self-supported Ru-doped NiMoO4 for efficient hydrogen evolution with 1000 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential

Self-supported Ru-doped NiMoO4 (Ru-NiMoO4) is synthesized on commercial NiMo foam. The Ru-NiMoO4 exhibits extremely high performance for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution with a small overpotential of 170.6 mV to afford a current density of 1000 mA cm-2, and excellent durability for 150 hours in alkaline solution.

A chemical coating strategy for assembling a boron-doped diamond anode towards electrocatalytic degradation of late landfill leachate

The high efficiency electrocatalytic degradation of late landfill leachate is still not an easy task due to the complexity and variability of organic pollutants. A chemical coating strategy for assembling a boron-doped diamond anode (BDD) towards electrocatalytic degradation of late landfill leachate was adopted and studied. The results shows the high removal rates of organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) after electrochemical oxidation for 5 h can reach 99% and 100%. Further, the organic migration and transformation depends on current density, A/V value, initial pH, electrochemical degradation time, and composition of the stock solution. Specifically, alkaline conditions can increase both TOC and NH3-N removal rates, which is reflected in the NH3-N removal rate of 100% when the pH is 8.5 after only 5 h. The types of organic matter decreased from 63 species to 24 species in 5 h, in which the removal of fulvic acids is superior to that of soluble biometabolites. Amides/olefins and phenolic alcohols are all degraded and converted into other substances or decomposed into CO2 and H2O by BDD, accompanied by the continuous decomposition of alcohol-phenols into alkanes. In all, this study provides a core reference on electrocatalytic degradation of late landfill leachate.

A Review of the Recent Advances in Composite Membranes for Hydrogen Generation Technologies

Keeping global warming at 2 degrees and below as stated in the "Paris Climate Agreement" and minimizing emissions can only be achieved by establishing a hydrogen (H2) ecosystem. Therefore, H2 technologies stand out in terms of accomplishing zero net emissions. Although H2 is the most abundant element in the known universe, molecular H2 is very rare in nature and must be produced. In H2 production, reforming natural gas and renewable hydrogen processes using electrolyzers comes to the fore. The key to all these technologies is to enhance production speed, performance, and system lifetime. At this point, composite membranes used in both processes come to the fore. This review article summarizes composite membrane technologies used in methane, ethanol, and biomass steam reforming processes, proton exchange membranes, alkaline water electrolysis, and hybrid sulfur cycle. In addition to these common H2 production technologies at large quantities, the innovative systems developed with solar energy integration for H2 generation were linked to composite membrane utilization. This study aimed to draw attention to the importance of composite membranes in H2 production. It aims to prepare a guiding summary for those working on membranes by combining the latest and cutting-edge studies on this subject.

Mono-component bacterial cellulose heterogeneous membrane mediated by ionic liquids for osmotic energy harvesting

The massive reserves of osmotic energy existing in estuary will be highly desired as promising energy source that avails to solve the problem of energy shortage and environment deterioration. The ion transport membrane is core component optimized through composite membrane heterostructure to maximize the osmotic energy harvesting but suffer from gaps and resistance increase, which limit their practical applications. Here we demonstrate mono-component heterogeneous regenerated bacterial cellulose (RBC) membranes fabricated by subtle regenerated technique through Ionic Liquids (ILs). Such membranes obtain heterogeneous nature by the difference in fiber intertwining states due to the different treatment conditions on both sides. It achieves osmotic energy conversion with maximum power density of 0.70 W·m-2at 100-fold, which provides ingenious strategy for excellent performance and low-cost osmotic energy harvesting. By minimizing pores and maximizing the surface charges, energy barriers can be lowered, ion permeable and selective transport channels for energy harvesting device can be increased, as supported by the numerical simulation. This is the first time the construction strategy for mono-component heterogeneous membrane mediated by ILs for osmotic energy harvesting is proposed, which averts gaps between the layers of different materials effectively and provides theoretical guidance for subsequent in-depth research on mono-component ion-selective heterogeneous membrane.
