Abstract
Schemas are foundational mental structures shaped by experience. They influence behaviour, guide the encoding of new memories and are shaped by associated information. The adaptability of memory schemas facilitates the integration of new information that aligns with existing knowledge structures. First, we discuss how novel information consistent with an existing schema can be swiftly assimilated when presented. This cognitive updating is facilitated by the interaction between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. Second, when novel information is inconsistent with the schema, it likely engages the hippocampus to encode the information as part of an episodic memory trace. Third, novelty may enhance hippocampal dopamine through either the locus coeruleus or ventral tegmental area pathways, with the pathway involved potentially depending on the type of novelty encountered. We propose a gradient theory of schema and novelty to elucidate the neural processes by which schema updating or novel memory traces are formed. It is likely that experiences vary along a familiarity-novelty continuum, and the degree to which new experiences are increasingly novel will guide whether memory for a new experience either integrates into an existing schema or prompts the creation of a new cognitive framework. Abstract
AIM Recent studies suggest that although children with epilepsy may show normal learning and memory performance, accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) may become evident over time. Our study examined associations between delayed episodic memory performance (recall 1-week after learning) and executive functions. METHOD A consecutive sample of children with a diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy with focal or generalized seizures, without morphologic or metabolic abnormalities (n = 20, mean age: 11.70 years) was compared to an IQ-matched healthy control group (n = 20, mean age: 11.55 years). We also assessed parents' and children's rating of forgetting in everyday life and explored its association with delayed episodic memory recall. RESULTS Similar to results from recent studies of pediatric patients with temporal lobe epilepsy or genetic generalized epilepsy, our pediatric epilepsy patients showed a significantly elevated recall loss over time, although verbal learning, immediate and 30-minute recall was comparable to the matched control group. Additionally, delayed memory recall in patients was moderately associated with their subjective rating of forgetting, as well as with executive functions (verbal fluency and switching) and divided attention. INTERPRETATION We assume that executive functions play a crucial role in deep memory encoding, facilitating stronger and more enduring memory traces. Given that approximately 20% of epilepsy patients - compared to a healthy reference sample - had a significantly reduced delayed recall and due to the clinical relevance of long-term memory, age-appropriate standard norms for free memory recall after 1-week are desirable.

Abstract
In a seminal study, Slamecka and McElree showed that the degree of initial learning of verbal material affected the intercepts but not the slopes of forgetting curves. However, more recent work has reported that memories for central events (gist) and memory for secondary details (peripheral) were forgotten at different rates over periods of days, with gist memory retained more consistently over time than details. The present experiments aimed to investigate whether qualitatively different types of memory scoring (gist vs. peripheral) are forgotten at different rates in prose recall. In three experiments, 232 participants listened to two prose narratives and were subsequently asked to freely recall the stories. In the first two experiments participants were tested repeatedly after days and a month, while in the third experiment they were tested only after a month to control for repeated retrieval. Memory for gist was higher than for peripheral details, which were forgotten at a faster rate over a month, with or without the presence of intermediate recall. Moreover, repeated retrieval had a significant benefit on both memory for gist and peripheral details. We conclude that the different nature of gist and peripheral details leads to a differential forgetting in prose free recall, while repeated retrieval does not have a differential effect on the retention of these different episodic details.

Abstract
Long-term memory disturbances are amongst the most common and disruptive cognitive symptoms experienced by breast cancer survivors following chemotherapy. To date, most clinical assessments of long-term memory dysfunction in breast cancer survivors have utilized basic verbal and visual memory tasks that do not capture the complexities of everyday event memories. Complex event memories, including episodic memory and autobiographical memory, critically rely on hippocampal processing for encoding and retrieval. Systemic chemotherapy treatments used in breast cancer commonly cause neurotoxicity within the hippocampus, thereby creating a vulnerability to memory impairment. We review structural and functional neuroimaging studies that have identified disruptions in the recollection network and related episodic memory impairments in chemotherapy-treated breast cancer survivors, and argue for the need to better characterize hippocampally mediated memory dysfunction following chemotherapy treatments. Given the importance of autobiographical memory for a person's sense of identity, ability to plan for the future, and general functioning, under-appreciation of how this type of memory is impacted by cancer treatment can lead to overlooking or minimizing the negative experiences of breast cancer survivors, and neglecting a cognitive domain that may benefit from intervention strategies.

Abstract
Memory retrieval allows us to reinstate previously encoded information but is also considered to contribute to memory enhancement. Retrieval-induced enhancement may involve processing to strengthen memory traces, but neural processing beyond reinstatement during retrieval remains elusive. Here, we show that hippocampal processing, different from memory reinstatement, exists during retrieval in the human brain. By tracking changes in the response patterns in the selected hippocampal and cortical regions over time during retrieval based on functional MRI, we found that the representation of associative memory in CA3/DG became stronger even after cortical memory reinstatement, while CA1 showed significant memory representation at retrieval onset with the cortical reinstatement, but not afterwards. This tendency was not observed in the condition without active retrieval. Moreover, subsequent long-term memory performance depended on the delayed CA3/DG representation during retrieval. These findings suggest that CA3/DG contributes to neural processing beyond memory reinstatement during retrieval, which may lead to memory enhancement.

Abstract
Memory reconsolidation holds great hope for memory modification approaches and clinical treatments of mental disorders associated with maladaptive memories. However, it remains controversial as to whether reconsolidation is a general property of all types of memory. Especially, discrepancies have been reported in research focusing on whether declarative memory undergoes reconsolidation, and whether old memories can be reorganized after retrieval. Here, we discuss how these inconsistent results can be reconciled and what information we need to uncover for the general use of reconsolidation.
