Abstract
A dichotomy between the additions of organolithiums and lithium amides to cyclobutenediones is described wherein the former give carbonyl addition products while the latter induce ring opening by enone cleavage via O- to C-lithium transfer. This distinct mode of ring scission gives access to 2-oxobut-3-enamides and tetrasubstituted furans.

Abstract
A concise synthesis of (S)-macrostomine has been accomplished in five steps from natural nicotine in 19% overall yield via a pyridyne Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction as the key step. A Kumada cross-coupling reaction on a 1-chloroisoquinoline intermediate provided the natural product.

Abstract
Seven polyoxazoline ligands were synthesized in high yield in a one-pot reaction by heating polycarboxylic acids or their esters and chiral β-amino alcohols under reflux with concomitant removal of water or the alcohol produced in the reaction. The method is much simpler and more efficient in comparison to those methods reported in the literature.The compounds were used as chiral ligands in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of aromatic ketones, and the effects of the linkers and the substituents present on the oxazoline rings on the yield and enantioselectivity investigated. Compound 2 was identified as the best ligand of this family for the hydrosilylation of aromatic ketones.

Abstract
A complete NMR analysis with full assignment for (1)H and (13)C NMR spectral data for 5-(acetyloxy)-3-hydroxy-9,10-dimethoxy-6-oxo-11-oxatricyclo[6.2.1.0(2,7)]undec-2-yl acetate is described. This compound was prepared by rapid hydrogenation of the unstable Diels-Alder adduct obtained from the reaction between 3,4-dimethoxyfuran and 2,5-diacetoxy-1,4-benzoquinone. Full homonuclear hydrogen coupling constants measurements and molecular mechanics calculations were performed for the determination of the relative stereochemistry.

Abstract
Self-sensitized photooxygenation of 3,4-dialkoxyfurans 3a-d with molecular oxygen and UV- or sunlight at room temperature gave vitamin C derivatives 2a-d in good to excellent yields. Furan 3c, having photodegradable protecting groups, was also photooxygenated to give L-ascorbic acid (1) in a "one-pot" reaction. Furthermore, a novel photolytic transformation was developed for deuteration of furan 3b at the C-2 position with D(2)O to give furan 3d in 95% yield. Toxicity of furans 3a-c and butenolides 2a-c against human embryonic cell, murine embryo fibroblasts, normal fibroblasts, HeLa, and Vero cell lines in the presence of oxygen and indirect solar light was found to be much less than those of the antipsoriasis drugs anthralin and 8-methoxypsoralen.
