Abstract
We report a simple, highly stereoselective synthesis of (+)-(S)-γ-ionone and (-)-(2S,6R)-cis-γ-irone, two characteristic and precious odorants; the latter compound is a constituent of the essential oil obtained from iris rhizomes. Of general interest in this approach are the photoisomerization of an endo trisubstituted cyclohexene double bond to an exo vinyl group and the installation of the enone side chain through a [(NHC)Au(I)]-catalyzed Meyer-Schuster-like rearrangement. This required a careful investigation of the mechanism of the gold-catalyzed reaction and a judicious selection of reaction conditions. In fact, it was found that the Meyer-Schuster reaction may compete with the oxy-Cope rearrangement. Gold-based catalytic systems can promote either reaction selectively. In the present system, the mononuclear gold complex [Au(IPr)Cl], in combination with the silver salt AgSbF6 in 100:1 butan-2-one/H2O, proved to efficiently promote the Meyer-Schuster rearrangement of propargylic benzoates, whereas the digold catalyst [{Au(IPr)}2(μ-OH)][BF4] in anhydrous dichloromethane selectively promoted the oxy-Cope rearrangement of propargylic alcohols.

Abstract
Carotenoids are important isoprenoid compounds whose oxidative degradation produces a plethora of smaller derivatives, called apocarotenoids, which possess a range of different chemical structures and biological activities. Among these natural products, compounds having less than 15 carbon atoms in their frameworks are often relevant flavours or fragrances and their manufacturing represents an important economic resource for chemical companies. The strict correlation between stereochemical structure and odour has made the stereospecific synthesis of the latter biological active compounds increasingly important. In this review, the recent advances on the synthesis of the most relevant carotenoid-derived flavours and fragrances are discussed. In particular, the new synthetic methods that have given new and innovative perspectives from a scientific standpoint and the preparative approaches that might possess industrial importance are described thoroughly.

Abstract
An efficient and convenient strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of enantiomerically enriched 10-ethyl-7,8-dihydro-γ-ionone isomers (R)-(+)-7, and (S)-(−)-7 are described utilizing a lipase mediated resolution protocol, and reductive elimination of the secondary allylic alcohol as the key step. The enantioselective and diastereoselective lipase kinetic acetylation of 4-hydroxy-γ-ionone derivatives 6a afforded the 4-acetyl-γ-ionone derivatives (−)-8, and the 4-hydrox-γ-ionone derivatives (+)-6a, which are suitable precursors of the desired products. Stereospecific palladium-mediated elimination of allylic acetate provides the target compounds with an excellent enantiomeric excess and yield. Additionally, the novel 4,5-didehydro-α-ionone 13 is obtained from readily prepared (2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-yl) methanol 9. The structures of all newly synthesized compounds have been elucidated by 1H, 13C NMR, GC-MS, and IR spectrometry. These compounds represent a new class of odorants that may be of pivotal relevance in industrial perfumery.

Abstract
New chiral hydroxyethers 1a-f were prepared for asymmetric protonation of achiral enolates prepared from prochiral ketones. The enantioselectivity of protonation was highly dependent upon the acidity of the chiral alcohols, the highest enantioselectivity (90% ee) being achieved with 3,5-dichloro-substituted beta-hydroxyether 1c. A salt-free enolate generated from trimethylsilyl enol ether 4 provided product of the highest ee. Unlike other reagents, chloro-substituted alcohols provided almost consistent enantioselections throughout the reaction temperatures examined (-25 to -98 degrees C). Protonation of other aromatic ketones showed selectivity similar to that of 2-methyl-1-tetralone.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The allylic substitution of sterically hindered (2-iodocycloalkyl)phosphates proceeds with complete anti S(N)2' stereoselectivity with mixed diorganozincs of the type RZnCH(2)SiMe(3) in the presence of CuCN.2LiCl. Only the group R of the copper-zinc reagent is transferred in the allylic substitution. This method was used to prepare odoriferous substances such as (R)-alpha-ionone in 97% ee and (R)-dihydro-alpha-ionone in 98% ee.

Abstract
Two efficient enantioselective syntheses of the more active (S,S)-enantiomer of the powerful musk odorant Vulcanolide are described. In both syntheses, the key step is an enantioselective protonation of a ketone enolate. A third enantioselective protonation, of a thiol ester enolate, was applied for the determination of the absolute configuration of Vulcanolide by comparison with a known compound.
